The increasing demand for performance assessment of speaking skills in second languages has led to logistic complications, for example, the delivery of tests in overseas locations. One solution to the problem has been to train native interlocutors to carry out a series of oral interactions with the candidate, with assessment from audiorecordings of the test session postponed and conducted centrally by a small team of trained raters. But these procedures raise questions about the effect of such facets of the assessment situation as interlocutor variables and the quality of the audiotape recording. This project aimed to explore the school based assessment of levels of student performance on the constructs nominated by the Mayer Committee in their report 'The Key Competencies (1992)'. In a trial assessment 110 teachers in 10 schools across the country were asked to give global assessments of each of the key competencies for a total of 629 Year 11 students they were currently teaching using the key competencies framework developed for the purpose during the project. The 97 bilingual education program enhancement projects funded by the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Bilingual Education and Minority Languages Affairs in fiscal 1995 are analyzed for their demographic characteristics, goals and objectives, instructional characteristics, parent and family services, professional development, personnel training, and other program features. A subset of 33 programs was selected for in-depth analysis of features other than demographics. The 97 proposals, distributed among 21 states, served 53,535 students, 36,283 of whom were limited-English-proficient, from 78 language groups and at all grade levels. In this study of 2- and 4-year colleges, the extent to which women students' perceptions of a "chilly campus climate" were related to first year cognitive outcomes was investigated at 23 institutions. After a variety of potentially confounding influences were controlled for, several negative relationships were found between perceived chilly climates and women's cognitive growth. The negative relationships were more pronounced for women attending 2-year colleges than for their counterparts at 4-year institutions .

Many endohedral metallofullerenes have a C82 cage surrounding the metals, even though the normal arc-vaporization method of fullerene preparation does not generate C82 in significant abundance.1-10Manolopous et al.11-13attribute the low abundance of empty-cage C82 to the unfavorable electron configuration of this species. Consequently, the prevalence of C82 in metallofullerenes may be the result of an electron transfer from the encapsulated metal atoms to the fullerene cage.10-13 The extent of this charge transfer also contributes to the properties (e.g. catalytic, superconductive, nonlinear optical, and ferromagnetic) that are attributed to the endohedral metallofullerenes.14,15Because of the importance of the charge transfer reaction, characterization …
