This study was conducted to address: (1) the identification of at risk students; (2) the provision of help appropriate to their needs; and (3) discovery of ways to increase those students' probability of succeeding in school and in life. The study analyzed data generated through the Phi Delta Kappa Study of Students at Risk that involved 22,018 students enrolled in 276 elementary, middle and high schools nationwide. Surveys were gathered from 276 principals and 9,652 teachers. A literature review examines general efforts including ability grouping, promotion/retention, reduction in class size, and pull-out programs, as well as specific elementary, secondary, and …
The Relationship Between Dropout And Peer Mentoring In An Adult High School Completion Program, Jo Ann Pastor
The Relationship Between Dropout And Peer Mentoring In An Adult High School Completion Program, Jo Ann Pastor
Dissertations
Adult education encompasses a broad spectrum of institutions and activities which share a universal problem of retaining participants. Dropouts from adult high school completion programs are at a particular disadvantage economically. The literature is inconclusive on the causes of or remedies for program attrition. Although mentoring has been promoted and researched as a component of adult development, its use as a dropout prevention strategy for adult high school completion students is not reported in the literature.
An experimental study was conducted to test the relationship between peer mentoring and the dropout rate in an adult high school completion program. The …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was twofold: Purpose 1 was to determine to what degree the desirable characteristics of a quality science program based upon the national standards as developed by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) were actually being achieved as perceived by the public school secondary science teachers and supervisory personnel in Tennessee. Purpose 2 was to determine to what degree the quality components of a good science curriculum based upon the national standards as developed by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) were considered to be desirable components of a quality secondary science program by the public …
Teacher Retention And Teacher Satisfaction In Lutheran Secondary Schools, Cary L. Stelmachowicz
Teacher Retention And Teacher Satisfaction In Lutheran Secondary Schools, Cary L. Stelmachowicz
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between teacher retention and the nine subscales of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) Teacher Satisfaction Survey (Schmitt & Loher, 1986) for teachers in Lutheran secondary schools. Both former and current Lutheran secondary teachers (262) were surveyed to identify sources of satisfaction levels that may induce teachers to leave Lutheran secondary education.
The survey instrument used was the Teacher Satisfaction Survey developed by the NASSP. The survey includes nine subscales of satisfaction: administration, compensation, opportunities for advancement, student responsibility and discipline, curriculum and job tasks, coworkers, parents and …

In the collegial environment of a mid-sized urban University, faculty and administrators struggle with devising appropriate strategies for developing a set of general education requirements that can meet the multiple needs of a campus with a history of decentralized decision making. While some colleges vie with each other for increased enrollments, other units see general education as an opportunity to reinforce discipline specific goals; in addition, the perception of professional schools influences the ways in which the discussions and decisionmaking process are shaped.

Case Study #3 - Mystic College, Sandra Kanter
New England Resource Center for Higher Education Publications
In an effort to develop a more effective niche in a highly competitive higher education market, a tradition bound mid-sized private college known for its professional schools decides to overhaul its general education requirements. After formulating a bold curricular proposal, the institution is buffeted by the various demands and needs of campus politics and the inevitable challenges to tradition that such innovations bring. The proposal is subject to the contrary interpretations of policy and institutional history by board, faculty, and administration.

Case Study #2 - Littleton State University, Sandra Kanter
New England Resource Center for Higher Education Publications
A small public liberal arts institution receives word that its accreditation is in jeopardy. Though Littleton State is proud of its strong academic and professional majors and its recent institutional efforts to attack a new market of students, it must now decide the best way to examine its general education requirements or risk losing its accreditation. The case study outlines the process which the college follows in its efforts to maintain accreditation while still preserving its traditions and commitment to academic excellence. The case exemplifies the importance of examining possible internal risks as an institution responds to external pressures to …

Attacking Geographic Illiteracy, Chester Smolski
Smolski Texts
"It has been clearly demonstrated through numerous surveys that US residents are among the most geographically illiterate people in the world. Whether trying to locate our own country or the Soviet Union on a world map, we score among the lowest of the major industrial nations of the world in such a simple exercise. But the future looks brighter, both in the nation and in Rhode Island, thanks to the efforts of the National Geographic Society.
Comprehension Strategies Of Two Deaf Readers, Sue Livingston
Comprehension Strategies Of Two Deaf Readers, Sue Livingston
Publications and Research
Strategies for reading comprehension used by two deaf college students as they discussed assigned readings with their teacher and classmates are here shown in examples categorized, tallied, and compared. Both were active users of strategies, and their pattern of strategy use was similar: interpreting, questioning, paraphrasing, and integrating were the strategies most used. The student reader who preferred expressing and receiving English-like sign manifested a higher proportion of inaccurate interpretations and paraphrases than did the student reader who preferred receiving and expressing American Sign Language (ASL), primarily because the former was unfamiliar with written linguistic cues and conventions of narrative …
Changing Mathematics Learning Through Changing Teachers' Thinking, Pamela J. Cooke
Changing Mathematics Learning Through Changing Teachers' Thinking, Pamela J. Cooke
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
In the context of the goals for reform in mathematics education, as advocated by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, this thesis calls for elementary level students to be actively engaged in learning mathematics through the use of hands-on materials and problem solving situations which involve investigation, reasoning, and communication. These mathematical goals are discussed and then related to the more general critical thinking skills of identifying and formulating questions, asking and answering questions, investigating and analyzing data, deducing and judging deductions, inducing and judging inductions, defining terms, and interacting with others. This thesis is based heavily on the …

For the past two years Westmont College has been one of the beta test sites for the calculus reform experiment being conducted at the University of Illinois under the direction of Jerry Uhl. Brown, Porta, and Uhl have created text which is integrated with Mathematica, a very powerful symbol manipulation, graphics, and number crunching software package produced by Wolfram Research, Inc. A preliminary version of this text has just been released [2]. We have used the Illinois materials for an honors course of incoming Freshmen with prior calculus experience. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the curriculum and …
Cantor's Concept Of Infinity: Implications Of Infinity For Contingence, Bruce A. Hedman
Cantor's Concept Of Infinity: Implications Of Infinity For Contingence, Bruce A. Hedman
ACMS Conference Proceedings 1991
Georg Cantor (1845-1918) was a devout Lutheran whose explicit Christian beliefs shaped his philosophy of science. Joseph Dauben has traced the impact Cantor's Christian convictions had on the development of transfinite set theory. In this paper I propose to examine how Cantor's transfinite set theory has contributed to an increasingly contingent world view in modern science. The contingence of scientific theories is not just a cautious tentativeness, but arises out of the actual state of the universe itself. The mathematical entities Cantor studied, transfinite numbers, he admitted were fraught with paradoxes. But he believed that they were grounded in a …
Can Mathematical Methods Yield Theological Truth?, Jan De Koning
Can Mathematical Methods Yield Theological Truth?, Jan De Koning
ACMS Conference Proceedings 1991
This paper discusses the negative impact mathematical methods in theology can have on the church by looking specifically at Arminius and Voetius, Dutch theologians living in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century. Both Arminius and Voetius used mathematical methodology, although they came to different conclusions. I think their differences were due to their different worldviews, which in turn were fundamentally influenced by their upbringing. Both theologians, however, made the same mistake with their methodology and the church split because of that mistake.
A Tale Of Two Mathematicians, Robert Brabenec
A Tale Of Two Mathematicians, Robert Brabenec
ACMS Conference Proceedings 1991
The goal of this paper is to identify some of the discoveries in mathematics during the period from 1820 to 1875 that have profoundly changed the nature of mathematics. To provide a context for this, the author compares some results of mathematics before the year 1820 with those present after 1875. And to humanize this, the author discusses the details of the life and times of two mathematicians, one who was active before 1820 and one who was active after 1875.
How Has Christian Theology Furthered Mathematics?, Gene B. Chase
How Has Christian Theology Furthered Mathematics?, Gene B. Chase
ACMS Conference Proceedings 1991
In revising my Bibliography of Christianity and Mathematics to include material prior to the 20th century, it is difficult to know what to include and what to exclude, since Christian presuppositions informed much scholarship in a vague, cultural sort of way. This paper is a first cut at attempting to narrow down candidates for that Bibliography by looking for specific ways in which Christian theology has furthered mathematics.
Reviving The Argument From Design: Detecting Design Through Small Probabilities, William A. Dembski
Reviving The Argument From Design: Detecting Design Through Small Probabilities, William A. Dembski
ACMS Conference Proceedings 1991
How small do probabilities of events have to get before we refuse to attribute those events to chance? Smallness of probability is itself not enough since events with extremely small probability occur all the time. But when such events are also prespecified, it becomes difficult to attribute their occurrence to chance. Typically we search for a causal account of how chance was offset. Lacking such a causal story, however, are we still justified in asserting that an extremely improbable prespecified event was not the result of chance? This question is relevant to such diverse areas as prophecy, miracles, parapsychology, gambling, …

Burnout Among Head Start Social Services Coordinators In Region Iv, Robert Mason
Burnout Among Head Start Social Services Coordinators In Region Iv, Robert Mason
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The project was designed to study the nature of the burnout phenomenon among Head Start Social Services Coordinators in eight southeastern states. The association of age, sex, marital status, years employed, program size, caseload, race, education and perceived level of stress to the three subscales of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) were correlated on a population of 59 coordinators representing 25% of the total population. Years employed was shown to be negatively correlated to the Emotional Exhaustion subscale. Perceived stress levels due to workload were most strongly associated with emotional exhaustion. Relationship to the other factors studied was not significant. …
The Reference Connection: Teaching Thinking Skills Within The Library Reference Interview, Cynthia K. Fusco
The Reference Connection: Teaching Thinking Skills Within The Library Reference Interview, Cynthia K. Fusco
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
Library research is a thinking process composed of discrete, identifiable critical and creative thinking skills. These skills may be taught in school libraries as part of the reference interview, a conversation that occurs between librarians and student researchers. In order for this to take place, it is first necessary to understand the political importance of the definitional problems associated with the instructional role of the school librarian, to identify the steps in the research process and their related thinking skills, and to acknowledge the cognitive and affective aspects of the research process. School librarians who wish to include teachings part …
