Utilization Of Educational Television In Iowa's Elementary Schools, Jane Barker
Utilization Of Educational Television In Iowa's Elementary Schools, Jane Barker
Graduate Research Papers
In today;'s fast-paced world where messages conveyed through many forms of media, television as a form of entertainment has enjoyed much popularity. It has grown in recent years as a method of instruction in the school. The success of "Sesame Street" has powerfully demonstrated the potential of instruction through entertainment.
Television can be used effectively for learning, especially if used regularly. Kelly (1964) has shown that when television is used regularly as a source of instruction in the form of lectures and demonstrations, students do as well and sometimes significantly better on tests than when it is not used regularly. …

Piaget And Science Teaching, Frederick P. De Luca
Piaget And Science Teaching, Frederick P. De Luca
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Piaget's life is as interesting as his theory of intellectual development He was born in France in 1896, published his first article at the age of 11, completed his Ph.D. degree in biology at the age of 21, and subsequently devoted his efforts to study, research and teaching in the psychology of intellectual development. Initially he was interested in exploring the idea that intellectual development resulted from adaptation of the individual to his environment, a concept involving a combination of biology and psychology. As his research progressed, however, he found it necessary to incorporate ideas from the disciplines of formal …
A Unique Elementary Science Teacher Education Program, S. Cecilia Kuennen
A Unique Elementary Science Teacher Education Program, S. Cecilia Kuennen
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Within the past decade exciting new science programs have become available and have been introduced into the elementary schools. At the same time important changes are taking place in pre-service science education programs on the college level to ensure long-range success in the use of these new curricula. Briar Cliff College, Sioux City, Iowa, has successfully implemented an innovative pilot program which may well be adopted by other teacher education centers throughout the country. The strength of the program lies in the cooperative effort between the college and the elementary school system.

Student Programs In Retrospect, Brian J. Awbrey
Student Programs In Retrospect, Brian J. Awbrey
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Science may often be considered a discipline of absolutes and systematized knowledge, but science education in Iowa need not be so. To the young and enthusiastic Iowa student scientist there are a number of educational opportunities available that are exciting and relevant, as well as several which take place outside of the classroom. These extracurricular opportunities are designed to allow the secondary science student to realize a few of his educational aspirations while interacting directly with other professionals and student scientists from the state. Since I have been involved personally with some of the unique Iowa science educational opportunities as …

Fate Of The World Rests On Science Teachers: Asimov, Virginia L. Dobson, George Hamilton
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Dr. Isaac Asimov, biochemist, science writer, and former teacher, gave the Fellows Address at the 78th Science Teachers Association of New York State Conference last year. In his presentation he defined science as an attempt to understand the rules that govern the universe, an attempt that was of no practical purpose before the 18th century. The following excerpts were reported by Virginia L. Dobson and George Hamilton, Texas A & M University, College Station, Texas.
Selected Outcomes Of A Summer Institute For High School Biology Teachers, Melton E. Golmon
Selected Outcomes Of A Summer Institute For High School Biology Teachers, Melton E. Golmon
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The 1972 University of Iowa Summer Institute for High School Biology Teachers was designed to assist participants in implementing the course, Biological Science: Molecules to Man (Blue Version), developed by the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS). The program consisted of eight weeks of classroom instruction and was supported by the National Science Foundation. Instruction was planned to provide the participants with an opportunity to improve their competence in biological subject matter and to become acquainted with teaching strategies inherent in materials produced by BSCS. In order to accomplish these objectives, participants were enrolled in three related courses.

School Tours At The Des Moines Center Of Science And Industry, Linda Garten
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
As every teacher knows, some of the best learning experiences take place outside the classroom. This may be especially true when you take your class on a field trip to the Des Moines Center of Science and Industry, where a program has been planned especially for school groups. Science Center school tours provide a motivational experience which stimulates interest in science and technology through participation.

Women In Science - Bibliography Offer, Walter S. Smith
Women In Science - Bibliography Offer, Walter S. Smith
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Most high level science careers are not pursued by women in any large proportion. Women comprise less than ten percent of American physicians, engineers, geologists, chemists, physicists, dentists, and veterinarians. On the other hand, women are over-represented in such science-related careers as nursing, dental hygiene, medical technology, physical and occupational therapy, and dietetics. Men encounter personal barriers or social pressures which make difficult their entry into "women's work." Likewise, women cannot easily pursue "men's careers." The result includes society's cheating itself by its under-utilization of science talents and the individual's having a reduced range of choices which could lead to …

NSTA headquarters and staff recently moved out of the NEA Building into their own home at Connecticut Avenue and S Street NW. The Georgian-style building is conveniently located downtown where public transportation is available, and parking facilities are nearby. The spacious mansion has a large conference room suitable for committee meetings. Owning its own headquarters symbolizes NSTA's ability to build an identity as an independent organization and its hope to intensify the feeling of active membership on the part of science teachers.

A Report From Nsta Director For District Viii, Edward P. Ortleb
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
As the newly elected director of District VIII of the National Science Teachers Association, I had the oppo1tunity to attend the board meeting in Colorado Springs this summer. It was a real pleasure to work with the most capable staff and officers of NST A. Our district can be very proud of its representation for the past two years in the person of David L. Fagel from Marshalltown, Iowa. Dave did an outstanding job and is very much respected for his leadership. I hope that I may as ably serve District VIII.
