Community-Oriented Activities in the Teaching of ESL is a selection of projects developed to expand communicative competence among ESL students. Through such experiential learning, in which the students become involved with the target language outside the classroom, the reinforcement of survival skills and an opportunity for actual communication with native speakers are provided.

Each activity is divided into four parts; a description of the objectives; a section on information to collect; a section which gives the student practice in using the language in situations; and follow-up suggestions upon completion of the activity.

The author describes her experience as TEFL Coordinator for a Peace Corps training program for both Americans and Africans in Togo. The background of TEFL training in Togo is outlined. The organization of the training program is presented, along with problems encountered and recommendations for future training programs. The author also discusses the content of the training program in light of the rationale and goals of training, and shares some personal insights gained as a result of her expereince. Problem. Since the Seventh-day Adventist administrator must define a suitable mode of practice, the question must be addressed; does the Seventh-day Adventist religion require a distinctive mode of practice or simply suggest a characteristic approach to a common mode of practice?

Method. While the Seventh-day Adventists share many beliefs in common with all Christians, their most distinctive belief is found in the messages of three angels described in Revelation 14:6-12. In formulating the rationale for the course, current theories of learning and moral development were reviewed together with ideas drawn from Scripture and other sources. Problem. This study investigated whether the express purpose of Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) education, (the transmission of the SDA religious heritage) is being fulfilled. It was based on the relationship between five dimensions of religiosity (the criterion variables), the amount of exposure to SDA education, and other selected variables such as age, sex, scholastic achievement, home religious practices, religious affiliation and marital status of the subjects' parents (the predictors). Planning of educational facilities is recognized as the responsibility of the educational administrator (Anderson & Van Dyke, 1972; McClurkin, 1964). Much has been written about planning of educational facilities and about the role of the architect and the facility planning specialist, but the details of the educational administrator's responsibility for facility planning has not been clearly defined (Boyer, 1973).

Method

To determine the essential elements of the administrator's responsibility in planning educational facilities, an extensive review of literature was undertaken. The purpose of this study was to show that the present Student Evaluation of Seminary (SES) provides the seminary teacher with an inadequate estimate of his credibility in the classroom, as perceived by his students. To accomplish this goal, a list of student responses to questions about their seminary teachers was developed and analyzed. The results indicated that not all factors of teacher credibility as perceived by the seminary students were being measured by the SES.

In May of 1980, this survey was conducted to determine students’ needs and perceptions of university counseling at Eastern Illinois University. 158 students were surveyed using questionnaires. Three areas were focused on: (1) Students’ perceptions of the university counseling center, (2) Students’ needs for counseling, and (3) Students’ willingness to go to the counseling center for help with these needs. The findings suggested that students were generally unaware of the services offered at the counseling center and perceived the center as appropriate for help with educational and vocational problems, but less appropriate for personal and social problems.
