Assessing College Students' Understanding Of Acid Base Chemistry Concepts, Yanjun Wan May 2014

Assessing College Students' Understanding Of Acid Base Chemistry Concepts, Yanjun Wan

All Dissertations

Typically most college curricula include three acid base models: Arrhenius', Bronsted-Lowry's, and Lewis'. Although Lewis' acid base model is generally thought to be the most sophisticated among these three models, and can be further applied in reaction mechanisms, most general chemistry curricula either do not include Lewis' acid base model, or quickly mention it at the end of the acid base chapter, because of the concern that Lewis' model may confuse general chemistry students (Shaffer 2006). While such a disconnection in curriculum might put students to disadvantage as they try to construct solid and coherent acid base mental models, there …

Demonstrating Reflection: A Content Analysis Of Reflection That English Teacher Candidates Demonstrate In Writing, William Kerns May 2014

Demonstrating Reflection: A Content Analysis Of Reflection That English Teacher Candidates Demonstrate In Writing, William Kerns

All Dissertations

This study is an analysis of the depth of reflection exhibited in written documents produced by English teacher candidates. Description and insights were drawn into the reflective thinking of the undergraduate teacher candidates in the context of teacher research essays that they produced. Reflection is widely viewed as enabling teacher candidates to make connections between actions and consequences as well as between theory and practice. Teacher education programs are encouraged by accreditation agencies to adopt a framework that helps teacher candidates to reflect on practice. However, there is no broadly accepted protocol in place for determining depth of reflection that …

Besocratic: An Intelligent Tutoring System For The Recognition, Evaluation, And Analysis Of Free-Form Student Input, Samuel Bryfczynski Nov 2012

Besocratic: An Intelligent Tutoring System For The Recognition, Evaluation, And Analysis Of Free-Form Student Input, Samuel Bryfczynski

All Dissertations

This dissertation describes a novel intelligent tutoring system, BeSocratic, which aims to help fill the gap between simple multiple-choice systems and free-response systems. BeSocratic focuses on targeting questions that are free-form in nature yet defined to the point which allows for automatic evaluation and analysis. The system includes a set of modules which provide instructors with tools to assess student performance. Beyond text boxes and multiple-choice questions, BeSocratic contains several modules that recognize, evaluate, provide feedback, and analyze student-drawn structures, including Euclidean graphs, chemistry molecules, computer science graphs, and simple drawings. Our system uses a visual, rule-based authoring system which …

Investigation Of Remedial Education Course Scores As A Predictor Of Freshman-Level Course Performances, Larry Ulmer May 2010

Investigation Of Remedial Education Course Scores As A Predictor Of Freshman-Level Course Performances, Larry Ulmer

All Dissertations

This study sought to determine the relationship between the performance in remedial courses (English and math) and college-level course performances among students in a large university. This study investigated whether remedial education improves the achievement in freshman level collegiate courses. The study contributes to the literature on remedial education courses and placement testing, therefore offering possible enhancements and improvements to the improvement in remedial education.
The researcher selected the correlational research design because the study sought to explore relationships between remedial course scores and freshman-level course scores. The findings from this study showed remedial course performance was associated in a …
