The following research question is investigated in this paper: How does purposeful interaction with teacher feedback impact the writing outcomes of high school students? The literature review explored the topics of writing development, feedback, and motivation and self-efficacy in writing. A mixed methods approach was used to investigate whether purposeful, directed interaction with teacher feedback led to improved outcomes in students’ writing. Participants were a cohort of 36 racially diverse, at-risk students who were behind their grade-level peers in the development of age-appropriate literacy skills in a co-taught intervention English class. The Moving and Learning curriculum was designed to help physical education students learn skills that will help them reduce stress by using yoga, mindfulness, and breathing techniques. Methods from all three areas were used to create a three week curriculum that would allow teachers in physical education, and other content areas, to get kids moving while they are learning. The three week curriculum is accompanied by a full appendix to the all of the yoga, breathing, and mindfulness tools and is presented in a scope and sequence that lets the students build on new and prior knowledge. The purpose of this study is to investigate to what lengths the parents of open enrolled students are willing to go, to gain entrance into the Spanish Immersion program, upon the closure of open enrollment to 1% (one percent). Qualitative study results demonstrate that parents are not willing to go to any lengths to obtain enrollment. This significantly rejects the hypothesis that they would be willing to do “whatever it takes” as they communicated upon the initial closure of open enrollment to 1%. This qualitative study addresses two questions related to access to social services for adult newcomers with limited L1 print literacy skills: First, what barriers do LESLLA clients experience to accessing social services and to settlement? Second, what resources are they employing in order to access these services? Five LESLLA learners, a LESLLA instructor and a settlement counselor were interviewed about barriers and enablers to accessing social services where a disconnect between assumed and actual print-literacy skills exists. Participants also discussed work-arounds for accessing those services. While LESLLA participants reporting greater length of residency also described increased cultural capital, all LESLLA …

Aspect is fundamental to expressing time and sequence of events in narratives. In second language acquisition literature little is known about how English aspect is comprehended. This study manipulates aspect in narratives and compares comprehension of Spanish speakers to English and Arabic speakers. English and Spanish have morphosyntactic aspect, Arabic does not. This study examines aspect comprehension in 18 native Spanish speakers, using 16 narratives to capture moment-to-moment and off-line processing. Results show that Spanish speakers comprehend aspect more like English speakers in the moment-to-moment processing, where Arabic speakers do not. This study built on previous research about the effectiveness of using Project-Based Learning in adult ESL classes. The study investigated whether a class project on U.S. careers could help students meet the College and Career Readiness (CCR) standards by learning how to extract, analyze, and use evidence from texts to support claims. The results of students' pre-tests and post-tests and an examination of students' writing showed that they improved in their acquisition of that skill during the semester-long project. This study measured the effects of a music-based Spanish instructional intervention on the Spanish vocabulary acquisition of four- and five-year-old students of varying language backgrounds who were enrolled together in a dual immersion preschool program. Research by Christ & Wang (2010), Schwartz (2014) and others concludes that young, pre-reading children with underdeveloped vocabulary can encounter difficulties achieving literacy. The purpose of this study was to understand Saudi students’ level of epistemological development and the extent to which intellectual development was connected with factors of academic success. The Measure of Epistemological Reflection was used to allow seven students to expound on their view of the roles instructors, peers and others play in the pursuit of knowledge and the truth. The power of these literature circles lies in the success of the conversations students have. The thesis discusses influencing factors through a qualitative analysis of archival school data, student surveys, and student interviews. The research takes place in a “fringe rural” suburban public high school of a Midwest city with graduating class sizes between 200 and 250 students. This qualitative, multiple case study sought to uncover the benefits and challenges of these models and apply these benefits and challenges to opening a diverse, nature-based preschool in South Bend, Indiana. Data collection included interviews and site visits to four nature-based preschool program models in the Midwest and two interviews with local early childhood experts. In this study, the author examines the systems in place at a charter school that enrolls predominantly, low-income, African-American students.
