Assignment Sequencing In Professional Communication Courses: The Search For An Innovative Pedagogy, Lynne R. Mcknight Herr Jan 1991

Assignment Sequencing In Professional Communication Courses: The Search For An Innovative Pedagogy, Lynne R. Mcknight Herr

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Kotler's cry for practical dialogue, rather than an exchange of complicated theories, among business communication professors is a rare one. It is not that professors in the discipline don't crave such a thing; rather their peer juries don't believe it to be a respectable quest, one weighted with scholarly worth.ยท Seldom do articles offering such practical advice appear in prestigious academic journals. If pedagogical practicality is included in these journals, the brief blurb (usually one paragraph) is usually confined to the last paragraph of the article, offering little chance for explanation of how to implement the theory ...

Iowa Survey Of Computer-Related Technology Use By K-12 Teachers , Denise Ann Schmidt Jan 1991

Iowa Survey Of Computer-Related Technology Use By K-12 Teachers , Denise Ann Schmidt

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

It has been more than a decade since microcomputers became available as a new technology for schools. During this decade, computer-related technologies have become an integral part of the educational environment in schools throughout the United States. Many school districts have purchased large amounts of computer-related hardware and software, only to find that many teachers were uncertain of the potential instructional uses of these technologies. Becker (1990) stated that even though computer acquisition has continued to expand in most schools, there has continued to be a small minority of teachers using computers for instruction, learning, or productive work in the ...

A Philosophical Analysis Of Conceptual Models Of Nursing , Sandra Courtney Sellers

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Path analysis was employed for testing the empirical model, and the same procedures were performed individually with the three sets of data. There seemed to be some similarities in adjustment patterns between the Mexican and the ...

Food Frequency And Nutritional Status Of Asian Children In The Wic Program , Ali Khomsan Jan 1991

Food Frequency And Nutritional Status Of Asian Children In The Wic Program , Ali Khomsan

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Two sites were chosen as locations for the study: Ames, and Des Moines, Iowa. The sample consisted of 75 Asian children under five years old. A revised WIC food frequency was used to determine children's dietary scores that would reflect dietary intake. The mean dietary score was 15, which is taken to be equivalent to an intake of 80 to 100% of the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) for 11 nutrients. Stepwise regression identified children's age as the best predictor for children's dietary scores (p <.05);Anthropometric measurements of weight for age, height for age, and weight for height were used as indicators of children's growth that would reflect nutritional status. Gomez classification, which is based on weight for age ratio, classified 13.3% of children in the WIC program as mild malnutrition. Using the measurements of height for age and weight for height, the Waterlow classification indicated that 8.0% of the children were stunted and 1.3% wasted;Weight for age and height for age of children in small sized families were significantly different than children in large sized families (p <.01). Father's education was a significant factor in determining children's nutritional status. Less education was associated with lower nutritional status as measured by weight for age (p <.01), height for age (p <.01), and weight for height (p <.01). Mother's education was positively associated with children's weight for age (p <.01), height for age (p <.01), and weight for height (p <.01). The length of stay of the parents in the United States positively affected height for age of their children (p <.05) and 25% of the height for age variance was explained by combination of the length of stay of the parents in the United States and education of mother. The length of time in the WIC program was positively related to weight for age (p <.01) and weight for height (p <.01).

An Undergraduate Home Economics Core: Perceptions Of Students , Lisa Christine Lebleu Jan 1991

An Undergraduate Home Economics Core: Perceptions Of Students , Lisa Christine Lebleu

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

An increased emphasis on specializations within the home economics profession has raised serious concerns about the necessity for common core concepts in home economics curricula and the role of such concepts in facilitating the students' understanding of the integrative nature of the home economics profession; The American Home Economics Association's documents outlining accreditation criteria and guidelines identify a common body of knowledge as a necessary criterion for programs of home economics in higher education. It cannot be assumed, however, that students' exposure to a common core of experiences will automatically result in shared concepts, and competencies with regard to ...
