One will most readily agree that visual arts have been set aside from the everyday instructional curriculum that teachers use at the elementary school level. Contrarily, numerous evidences suggest that visual arts have an important role in elementary schools and can significantly benefit students’ academic performance. This research used Literature Review, including peer reviewed articles, and primary research to analyze the importance of infusing creative learning in the school curriculum. Creative learning provided an education milieu that helped students reach their potential. Some researchers professed that when children are exposed to activities that include creative learning, they had a better understanding while learning about the different genres. As traditionally ran public schools have focused more on testing in the past few decades, alternative methods of education have been rising in relevance. One model of alternative education, the Waldorf method, has an emphasis on developmental stages and the arts in a way that has been shown to increase test scores and reduce behavioral problems in their students. This capstone project examines the academic benefits of the Waldorf model of education and whether their curriculum is equitable for all students in one of the schools in the Monterey Bay area.

In recent years arts education programs in schools have been drastically reduced or eliminated due to economic challenges. Underfunded schools are forced to focus on the mandated curriculum. This Capstone Paper focused on implementing art into low-income communities. The participants for the Capstone Project included 32 fifth-grade students in a public elementary school located on California’s Central Coast. The Capstone Project began by showing the students a video with figurative language music. After that, the researcher showed a presentation on the different figurative language to help the students understand the project better. The students then got into groups of four and created a poster on each of the different figurative language. The Turnaround Arts program at Rosa Parks Elementary School has advanced overall student success, particularly benefiting students in Special Education. This capstone project focused on the need for increasing music opportunities in schools and the ways in which it increases literacy, particularly in an English Language Learners (ELL) classroom, where increasing English literacy is so vital. After interviewing a district music director, a high school English language development director, and a high school ELL teacher, three action options emerged as ways to provide more music in high school ELL classrooms. Based on the findings, an action was undertaken to help secondary teachers incorporate more music into their daily curriculum.

Over the years, there have been many agencies that have formed connections with Hope Services.
