Background: San Diego’s Tuberculosis (TB) incidence is more than double the national rate. The majority of cases of active TB are due to the progression of latent TB infection (LTBI).

Objectives: This evidence-based practice (EBP) project aimed to increase knowledge, awareness, and improve attitudes and practices regarding TB among college students.

Participants: Twenty Community College Students in San Diego participated in the project.

Methods: Students attended an in-person educational session. A pre-post knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) questionnaire measured the impact.

Abstract

Background: Forty percent of the US population ages 20-39 are categorized as obese,

their BMI is over 30, and 35% of college age students are obese or overweight. Issues related to obesity cost the US $147 billion annually. Between 40%-50% of college students are reported to be inactive. Inactivity can lead to increased morbidity and mortality related to increased risks of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, musculoskeletal issues, and depression. Providing dietary and physical activity education and access to nutritional information promotes behavior change in young adults.

Background: Medical errors continue to plague the healthcare industry. The annual rates of morbidity are approximately 2.69 million (AHRQ, 2019), while mortality rates exceed 400,000 per annum (Makary & Daniel, 2016). There may be no panacea to combat these egregious rates. Background and Evidence Problem: As the population ages, there is an increase in the incidents of falls. Falls are the predominant cause of both nonfatal and fatal injuries among adults aged 65 years and older (Bergen et al., 2016). Extensive research has been conducted in fall prevention in hospitals, skilled nursing, and rehabilitation units. End-of-life care in a hospice setting presents a greater challenge in risk identification and prevention of falls. A local hospice had 457 falls between July 2018 to mid-March 2019 with a lack of consistent, detailed, fall education and documentation.

Falls cause greater than 600,000 deaths per year and are the most common injury in people over 65 years of age. Fall prevention in the acute care setting has been identified as key goal in the most recent JCAHO review process. Background: Hispanics utilize more aggressive medical treatment at the end of life and are less likely to receive end-of-life care consistent with their wishes than nonHispanic Whites. Hispanics are less likely than nonHispanic Whites to have an advance directive (AD). Increasing AD completion among Hispanics can promote end-of-life care consistent with their wishes, diminish healthcare disparities, and eliminate unnecessary healthcare spending.
