This experiential estuary science field trip program was initially created as a master's capstone project by Anna Caputo in partnership with Machicomoco State Park, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), and the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (CBNERR). The ultimate goal of the project is to strengthen community estuarine literacy in the local area by teaching students who will be future marine scientists, community leaders, watermen, and environmentally conscious citizens. The program is designed to highlight the coastal habitats at the state park, the issues those habitats are facing, and how science and monitoring efforts done …

The Journey Of Unlearning: A Close Reading Of Civil War Pedagogy In Alabama And Virginia, Michaela Hill

This thesis is a close reading of Civil War pedagogy in Alabama and Virginia with special attention given to Black history during the Civil War era. Through an examination of Civil War history, it is evident that slavery was the main cause of the War. The development of the Lost Cause narrative, a reaction to Blacks gaining Civil Rights that aimed to prove the Confederate war effort was honorable, is still promoted in southern schools. Alabama and Virginia both provide state standards, outlines of the minimum required knowledge to be obtained on a given subject by the end of the …

Drawing to Learn (D2L) is a learning aid that encourages STEM students to interact with abstract concepts in STEM by sketching. D2L is not an intuitive skill, and researchers strive to provide students with guidelines on how to master this method. One potential way to enhance the D2L method for students is by incorporation of visual cues, specifically color. While many students choose to incorporate color into their models without explicit instruction to do so, we have found no research on: a) why students use color in sketching, b) its effects on D2L. This study compared the teaching practices and efficacy beliefs of traditional middle school teachers and International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IBMYP) teachers in an urban school district using the framework of Stronge's Model of Effective Teaching (2007), Stronge and Tucker's (2003) Teacher Effectiveness Behavior Scale, and Tschannen-Moran & Hoy's (2001) Teacher's Sense of Efficacy Scale. Recommended practices for effective teaching were extracted from the following four categories of Stronge's (2007) Model of Teacher Effectiveness: classroom management and organization, implementing instruction, monitoring student progress, and construct of teacher's sense of efficacy.;A stratified random sample of teachers was selected from four middle …

The prevalence of high nonverbal reasoning strength among children from low income, culturally diverse backgrounds challenges the education community to provide effective instruction for these students (Briggs et al., 2008; Koshy & Robinson, 2006; Olszewski-Kubilius, 2007; Robinson et al., 1997; VanTassel-Baska, 2003b; VanTassel-Baska, Feng, & Evans, 2007). The purpose of this study was to analyze the design and implementation of the International Baccalaureate Program for its fit as an advanced academic option. The first step involved determining the alignment of program and curricular goals with recommended practices for general and gifted education and, consequently, to examine the instructional practices and self-efficacy beliefs of International Baccalaureate teachers.;A review of literature revealed limited research on IB Program implementation and its grounding in recommended instructional practice. The purpose of this study was to compare the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) 2000 Standards for Elementary Preparation and the Virginia Licensure Regulations for Elementary Personnel (1998) with the perceptions of principals and teachers in the elementary schools in Chesterfield County, Virginia. The methodology incorporated an exploratory design using qualitative data collection and analyses of surveys of school-based personnel, as well as the NCATE standards and Virginia Licensure Regulations. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between student achievement and home socialization. Specifically, it explored the influence of cognitive and academic home socialization variables on the achievement of seventh- and twelfth-grade students. It further explored the influence of cognitive and academic subvariables on student achievement. The cognitive home socialization subvariables were stimulating literacy environment and joint learning activities. The purpose of this research was to determine if there was a relationship between collective teacher efficacy and student achievement and if collective teacher efficacy made an independent contribution in explaining student achievement beyond socioeconomic status. The conceptual basis for this study was Bandura's theory of self-efficacy.;Relationships between collective teacher efficacy and student achievement on the Virginia grade 8 math, writing, and English Standards of Learning (SOL) tests were found to be significant. The relationship between collective teacher efficacy and student achievement on the grade 8 writing SOL test made an independent contribution when controlling for socioeconomic status.
