Students Who Are The First Generation Of Their Family To Attend College: A Comparative Study Of Western Washington University Frosh, Sarah Dittman, Gary (Gary Russell) Mckinney, Joseph E. Trimble

Executive Summary: Information for this report was obtained from a study conducted to determine the relative level of adjustment to college of first-generation and second-generation freshmen at Western Washington University. The study utilized the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (SACQ), a 67 item self-report adjustment measure. The SACQ is composed of a full-scale and four subscales: academic adjustment, social adjustment, personal-emotional adjustment, and attachment to the school the student is attending. The SACQ was administered to a randomly selected sample of 250 first and second- generation freshman students. Data analysis of survey results indicated that first-generation students do not measure …

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Between Summer, 1992 and Spring, 1993, 403 Masters degrees were awarded at Western. The first survey of Masters recipients by the Office of Institutional Assessment and Testing, conducted in Spring, 1994, contacted 290 (72.9%) of them. The majority of Western's Masters recipients (58.6%) are women. One in six (18.1%) are not U.S. citizens; fewer (5.8%) are U.S. minority group members. Ages are diverse. The oldest was 63 at graduation; the youngest, 23. One-fourth (28.9%) were over 40. Over half (57.1%) received their undergraduate training in Washington, 28.9% at Western. The average ORE scores were 507 on the Verbal, …

Executive Summary: At the request of President Morse and the Student Employment Center's Community Service/Volunteer Program, Western's 1994 alumni survey documented the extent and nature of community service activity by Western students, both as part of their course work and as non-course-based volunteer activities. We refer to these activities as "service learning." We also measured students' impressions concerning the value of their service experiences and estimated the impact of students' community service activities on the Bellingham and Whatcom County communities. Findings are based on responses by 1513 of the 2219 graduates in the Class of '93. Asked whether they had …

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Telephone interviews were completed with 42 Olympic Peninsula employers doing at least some work in the "environmental and resource management" area, along with much briefer contact with 42 other employers, establishing that they did not have employees in that area. Extrapolating results from our sample to all Olympic Peninsula employers involves a substantial margin of possible error. Even so, the report includes our best estimates of demand for personnel and training in Environmental Studies. We estimate the number of full-time Olympic Peninsula employees in environmental and resource management at 1,256. Another 882 work partially in the area. The …

Profile Of Women Incarcerated For Murder In Oklahoma, Constance L. Hardesty, Kathleen O'Shea, Beverly Fletcher

The present study addresses the need to increase our understanding of women incarcerated for violent crimes, especially murder, by developing a profile of women incarcerated for murder in Oklahoma. Compared to the United States as a whole, Oklahoma has one of the highest per capita rates of female incarceration. While women represent only five percent of the total prison population in the United States, they comprise twelve percent of Oklahoma's prison population (Oklahoma Department of Corrections, 1989). A Profile Of Selected Characteristics Of The 1993 Western Washington University Graduating Class, Gary (Gary Russell) Mckinney, Joseph E. Trimble, Jacqueline M. Andrieu-Parker

Executive Summary: Information for this report was obtained from the Student Tracking System. The report presents findings intended to provide insight into various characteristics of the 2198 graduates who matriculated during the 1992-93 academic year (Fall 1992 through Summer 1993), 58.7% of whom were females and 41.3% males. Natives (students who began their education at Western as first-time frosh) made up 44.2% of the 1993 graduates, and transfers 54.3%. Most graduates were between the ages of twenty-one to twenty-four years old (63.0%). No graduate was younger than twenty-one years old; the oldest graduate was seventy-three. Executive Summary: The following report provides written and tabular summaries of student responses to the Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) Student Information Survey for Western Washington University's 1993 in-coming freshman class. The CIRP Survey is used nationwide to gather normative data on the characteristics, attitudes, values, educational achievements, and future goals of in-coming frosh, and has been used at Western since 1971. In the 1993 CIRP report, national trends and trends for institutions within Western's classification group were compared to those found at Western. Executive Summary: In 1991 the United States Congress passed the Student Right-to-Know and Campus Security Act requiring colleges and universities to disclose, among other factors, the graduation rates for all full-time entering students pursuing degrees. In keeping with the federal legislation, Washington State's legislature, in 1993, passed SHB 1580, the "time-to-degree" bill requiring the state's colleges and universities to develop plans that will shorten existing time-to-degree rates and subsequently improve both degree persistence and graduation rates. Both legislative actions guided the contents of this report. The faculty, staff, and administration at Western Washington University have been acutely aware of their …

The explosion of World-Wide Web (WWW) across the Internet is staggering, both in terms of number of users and the amount of activity. However, to date, no reliable characterization exists of WWW users. In this paper, we report results from a survey that was posted on the Web for a month, in January of 1994. There were several goals motivating our survey. First, we wished to demonstrate a proof of concept for WWW technologies as a useful survey medium. Promoting the utilization of knowledge is an important mission for institutions of higher education. The "knowledge utilization" university should stand alongside the research university, the professional school, the liberal arts college, and the community college as one of the five archetypes of higher education institutions.

Environmental problems typify a class of social problems that require the utilization of existing knowledge in a trans-disciplinary manner just as much as they require the creation of new knowledge through research. In this note we respond to the comments of Ruble and Stout (1993) concerning the use of the revised Learning Style Inventory (LSI) developed by Kolb (1985). While our more recent psychometric research on the LSI leads us to conclude that the standard version should no longer be used, unlike Ruble and Stout, we see promise for new or modified versions in future research. We also indicate where several of their comments on our work, as well as the work of others, are not well founded.
