The Social, Psychological, And Developmental Aspects Of Leisure: Implications For College Student Development Educators, Michele Dickey-Kotz

Graduate Research Papers

Rapid changes of our society have produced a need for leisure education/counseling. Although some colleges attempt to meet this need, most do so through extra-curricular activities programs. Thus, in reality, students receive little or no preparation for leisure. This investigation is an attempt to identify, through a review of the literature, some of the social, psychological, and developmental aspects of leisure. Also identified are student needs regarding leisure education and service programs in addition to career development programs. The study is limited to the relative few empirical research studies on leisure education and explicates literature on associated 11 leisure 11 …

G85-753 Irrigation Scheduling Using Crop Water Use Data, C. Dean Yonts, Norman L. Klocke Jan 1985

G85-753 Irrigation Scheduling Using Crop Water Use Data, C. Dean Yonts, Norman L. Klocke

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide describes using the "checkbook" method to schedule irrigations based on crop water use data.

Irrigation scheduling determines when and how much water to apply to meet crop demand. Soil water status and current crop water use are key factors for scheduling irrigations. Field observations and crop growth stage are important, but scheduled irrigations result in better rainfall use while avoiding crop water stress or excessive irrigation.

Colonel Francis Parker And Beginning Reading Instruction, Elinor Woods Kline Jan 1985

Colonel Francis Parker And Beginning Reading Instruction, Elinor Woods Kline

Graduate Research Papers

In the late nineteenth century progressive educators advocated reforms in the educational system that were intended to humanize instruction. At the forefront of this movement was Colonel Francis W. Parker, a teacher and later an administrator who concerned himself with all aspects of the curriculum, including beginning reading. He was acclaimed by some as an innovator and attacked by others as a heretic. Parker's viewpoints concerning education countered the existing educational practices of the late 1800a. His beliefs concerning the teaching of reading were no leas radical to his time.

Despite our capacity for obtaining information in a variety of ways, reading remains a very important tool , The process of learning to read begins before reading readiness activities are introduced in Kindergarten. The heart of the reading process is comprehension, and the primary aim of reading instruction is to develop readers who understand and react to what they read (McCracken & McCracken, 1972). In short, they must comprehend the passage.

Testing A Direct Mail Offer In Magazine Subscription Promotion, Mary L. Peet

Graduate Research Papers

Direct marketing is an $82 million per year business. Its history dates back over a century with roots in direct mail. Direct marketing today involves not only mail, but a variety of media, including newspapers and magazines, radio, television and telephone. The cornerstone of direct marketing is its measurability and accountability, as well as a reliance on lists and a database (Baier, 1983). In other words, direct marketing allows marketers to improve their skills by measuring what they do against previous tests. The availability of lists and data about lists provides populations from which samples can be drawn to conduct …

A Study For School Media Center Program Improvement, Glen W. Jordan Jan 1985

A Study For School Media Center Program Improvement, Glen W. Jordan

Graduate Research Papers

The school library-media specialist holds an interesting position. They are not usually classroom teachers, but they are involved in the educational process. They select, purchase, catalog, and provide access to a great many materials in book form as well as in audiovisual and computer format. It is this material and its usage that puts the library-media specialist in such a unique and interesting position within the context of a school's educational program. 1 Although the media specialist is the person who generally does the selecting of learning materials for a school's media center, and knows as well as anyone what …

The Effects Of Constructivism And Behaviorism On The Development Of Autonomy In Young Children, Deborah I. Burk Jan 1985

The Effects Of Constructivism And Behaviorism On The Development Of Autonomy In Young Children, Deborah I. Burk

Graduate Research Papers

Autonomy, the ability to govern one's self, is an admired attribute in adults. The concern for the development of autonomy in young children is not new to the field of education. Piaget acknowledged autonomy as the goal of education over 50 years ago (Piaget, 1932). It is the opinion of the followers of Piaget that in order to develop autonomy to a marked degree, children must be given opportunities to make decisions and gain control of their own lives. Piagetian theory maintains that children construct their own reality based on their interactions with their environment (Kamii & DeVries, 1978). Therefore, …

Visual Literacy: Implications For Corporate Communications, Marion Hazzard Jan 1985

Visual Literacy: Implications For Corporate Communications, Marion Hazzard

Graduate Research Papers

Visual literacy, the ability to encode and decode visual messages, is a relatively new concept. Most visual literacy efforts are directed toward school children; very little research and development addresses adults' visual literacy and the potential effects of visual literacy on corporate communications. This paper focuses on visual literacy for adult professional communicators. By examining the background and theory of visual literacy, and tracing the use of visual communication in modern business, a rationale will be established for visual literacy training in the corporate setting.

G85-742 Dollar Spot Disease Of Turfgrass, John E. Watkins, Terrance P. Riordan Jan 1985

G85-742 Dollar Spot Disease Of Turfgrass, John E. Watkins, Terrance P. Riordan

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide describes the symptoms and disease cycle of dollar spot, and provides recommendations for controlling this turfgrass disease.

Dollar spot of turfgrass is one of the most persistent diseases on golf courses in North America. All commonly grown turfgrasses in Nebraska may be attacked, but differences in susceptibility exist within cultivars of the various turf species. Presence of dollar spot in a well-managed lawn affects its aesthetic appearance and value, but usually does not threaten its survival. Lawns recover from dollar spot injury when conditions are favorable for vigorous, healthy growth.

G85-750 Terrace Systems For Nebraska, Elbert C. Dickey, Tom Hamer, Delynn Hay, Paul J. Jasa

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide describes how different terrace shapes and systems can be used to reduce soil erosion losses on sloping fields. Loss of valuable topsoil to erosion prompted Nebraska farmers to build terraces as early as the 1920's. Current estimates indicate that water erodes as much as 140 million tons of soil annually from Nebraska's fields.
