A Study Using The Initial Teaching Alphabet As A Remedial Technique For Ninth Grade Students With Learning Disabilities, Jeanette Conner
A Study Using The Initial Teaching Alphabet As A Remedial Technique For Ninth Grade Students With Learning Disabilities, Jeanette Conner
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The reading achievement of two groups of ninth grade students with learning disabilities was compared using the standard scores on the Reading subtest of the Wide Range Achievement Test (WRAT) as the pre- and posttest measurement to determine gain in reading achievement. The experimental group used only curriculum materials written in the Initial Teaching Alphabet (ITA). The control group used curriculum materials written in traditional orthography provided for students with learning disabilities by a rural Kentucky School District. At the end of an 80-day period, the standard scores on the Reading subtest of the WRAT were compared using a t-test, …

A Preschool Outdoor Curriculum And Playground Design, Teacher Education, Connie Smith
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The writer proposes the utilization of a developmentally based outdoor curriculum and playground designed for young children. The curriculum consists of an overview, objectives, curriculum methodology, playground designs and evaluation. Cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains are each included in the objectives. A curriculum methodology focusing upon approaches for individualization and development of the total child is presented. The playground designs are based upon current research. Play value, development appropriateness and safety were considered in developing playground designs and curriculum. Evaluation of the curriculum and playground will be measured through assessments of the individual child, the class, and the staff. Numerous …

With traditional science textbooks still dominating the market, it is projected that the use of print material and related reading skills will persist as the prime method of science instruction. The need to research reading-science issues exists. This paper attempts to define the task or desired outcomes of research in reading-science dimensions. Areas developed in this paper include: (1) science reading and comprehension; (2) theories of the reading process (illustrated by models); (3) research in science reading (presented by grade level, subject matter, and curricular programs); (4) reading comprehension and science achievement (emphasizing text structure); and (5) research trends and …

ADAPT Program: Essays
All of us have mental images, or models, we use to help us understand our experiences, predict future events, and decide what to do next. Most of us have been trained in an academic discipline that has provided us with a whole range of models and their associated vocabulary. Sometimes it is helpful to take those professional images and words into an area of human behavior for which they may not have been intended and to explore what facets of that behavior they help us see in new ways.

Malone's suggestion of challenge, curiosity, and fantasy as the key aspects of instrinsic motivation for learning, based on his analyses of computer games, is used as a format for discussing four interactive videodisc lessons for general physics. The idea of challenging learning is expressed in the lessons based on the Physics and Automobile Collisions and Energy Tranformations Featuring the Bicycle videodiscs. Curiosity is especially evoked in the opening ballet scenes in the Studies In Motion videodisc. As part of a fantasy story line, students are asked to solve the puzzle of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapse in a videodisc lesson …

Creative Learning: A Curriculum For Preprimary Children: Volume 1, Marjorie L. Oelerich, Jean Peterson, Meredith S. Ring
Elementary and Literacy Education Department Publications
CREATIVE LEARNING: A CURRICULUM FOR PREPRIMARY CHILDREN Is the beginning. It is hoped that this curriculum may serve as a resource to others as they guide the learning of young children. It is not a cut and dried, how-to-do-it book. But it is a collection of numerous learning experiences within the context of a unit setting. The various disciplines are not, and cannot, be separated;learning overlaps. With a central theme, young children will have many opportunities to examine, investigate, explore, experience and discover concepts of meaning. As the children approach the same concept from a number of experiences, they will …

Developing Formal Reasoning Through The Study Of English, Anton E. Lawson, Elmer A. Kral
ADAPT Program: Faculty Biographies and Links
Although hardly immune to criticism, Piaget's concept of sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete, and formal operational stages of thought has considerable face validity. In view of the accumulated Piagetian observations that critical reasoning skills develop in a generally sequential order, the finding that a substantial proportion of adolescents and adults demonstrate very little competency with formal reasoning skills poses a serious educational concern. The purpose of this article is to present ten practical teaching procedures to encourage students to develop formal reasoning skills. A 12th-grade English course will be used as an example.

In 1985 the Employment and Training Institute surveyed the sixteen Vocational, Technical & Adult Education (VTAE) districts in the state to determine admissions requirements for each associate degree, diploma program, and certificate program operated by the VTAE districts throughout Wisconsin. The survey was part of a study for the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction assessing the readiness of GED holders for postsecondary education.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This publication, the second of six NebGuides on agricultural grain options, explains specifications and uses of futures contracts for corn and soybean trading.

This publication outlines contract specifications of corn and soybean options on corresponding futures contracts presently traded at the Chicago Board of Trade (CBT).
All contract specifications are discussed including: price quotations, maximum and minimum price fluctuation figures, and last trading day for an option. How strike prices and premium values are determined in relation to futures contract prices also will …
G85-753 Irrigation Scheduling Using Crop Water Use Data, C. Dean Yonts, Norman L. Klocke
G85-753 Irrigation Scheduling Using Crop Water Use Data, C. Dean Yonts, Norman L. Klocke
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide describes using the "checkbook" method to schedule irrigations based on crop water use data.
Irrigation scheduling determines when and how much water to apply to meet crop demand. Soil water status and current crop water use are key factors for scheduling irrigations. Field observations and crop growth stage are important, but scheduled irrigations result in better rainfall use while avoiding crop water stress or excessive irrigation.

G85-742 Dollar Spot Disease Of Turfgrass, John E. Watkins, Terrance P. Riordan
G85-742 Dollar Spot Disease Of Turfgrass, John E. Watkins, Terrance P. Riordan
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide describes the symptoms and disease cycle of dollar spot, and provides recommendations for controlling this turfgrass disease.
Dollar spot of turfgrass is one of the most persistent diseases on golf courses in North America. All commonly grown turfgrasses in Nebraska may be attacked, but differences in susceptibility exist within cultivars of the various turf species. Presence of dollar spot in a well-managed lawn affects its aesthetic appearance and value, but usually does not threaten its survival. Lawns recover from dollar spot injury when conditions are favorable for vigorous, healthy growth.
