An Inservice Model To Impact Life Science Classroom Practice: Part One, David P. Butts, Wyatt Anderson, Mary Atwater, Thomas Koballa, Patricia Simmons, Rosalina Hairston

Faculty Publications

A model inservice program built on a theoretical foundation for changing behavior incorporates both teachers' knowledge, their attitudes as well as what they do. What teachers do in the classroom depends on both what they know and how they feel about what they know, Changing what teachers know and do is accomplished in a three phase sequence, awareness, arousal and action. In the awareness phase, teachers are confronted with their knowledge needs. In the arousal phase, teacher generate interest in using what they know. Action is reflected in what teachers do and is reinforced when they have time to reflect …

Examining An Assumption Of Linkage Between Lesson Planning And Implementation, Trena Wilkerson, Anthony J. Scheffler Sep 1992

Examining An Assumption Of Linkage Between Lesson Planning And Implementation, Trena Wilkerson, Anthony J. Scheffler

Faculty Publications

It is often suggested that preservice teachers who are trained to develop a lesson plan will, with equal acumen, be able to implement that plan. The purpose of this study was to test this assumption. Twenty-six preservice teachers in an early childhood practicum developed and implemented a mathematics lesson plan. The lesson plans were evaluated according to specific criteria set forth in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics' Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics using a weighted checklist. The implementation of each plan was also assessed using a Likert Scale reflective of similar criteria. A correlation between the …

A Descriptive Analysis And Academic Genealogy Of Major Contributors To Jtpe In The 1980s, Murrary F. Mitchell Jul 1992

A Descriptive Analysis And Academic Genealogy Of Major Contributors To Jtpe In The 1980s, Murrary F. Mitchell

Faculty Publications

Information about whose knowledge is accepted as important is valuable in understanding how a profession evolves. The term elders describes the individuals who control invisible networks of prestige and who determine what information is accepted for publication in professional journals. These published works stand as the foundation for the knowledge base of a discipline. The purpose of this article was to identify the elders in physical education teacher education (PETE) and to trace their academic genealogy. Elders were defined as major contributors to the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education from 1981 through 1989. The articles published by these subjects …

The Research Critique Approach To Educating Sociology Students, Rachel I. Filinson, Darek Niklas Apr 1992

The Research Critique Approach To Educating Sociology Students, Rachel I. Filinson, Darek Niklas

Faculty Publications

In recent years, instructors of methods courses have made a repeated plea in pedagogical journals for teaching students research techniques through "doing" or simulating a real project (Ballard 1987; Cutler 1987; Irish 1987; Ransford and Butler 1982; Stoddart 1987; Takata and Leiting 1987; Weiss 1987). Approaches are varied; they include individual, group, or class research projects that generate data for class-specific projects, collect data for external consumption, or use existing data. It is argued that the disembodied knowledge of scientific inquiry presented in the classroom must be supplemented concurrently by an exposure to the actual process of research. Only by …

Scholarly Behaviors Of Physical Education Methods Teacher Educators In Ohio, Murrary F. Mitchell Apr 1992

Scholarly Behaviors Of Physical Education Methods Teacher Educators In Ohio, Murrary F. Mitchell

Faculty Publications

This study focused on the behavior of a proportional, stratified random sample of 40 physical education methods teacher educators (PEMTEs) in the state of Ohio, or more specifically, on the professional implications of their scholarly behaviors. The focal questions addressed were (a) how do PEMTEs meet their responsibility to stay current in their professional areas, and (b) what are the professional implications of these efforts? Four specific behaviors were examined as evidence of scholarly behaviors: (a) reading professional journals, (b) writing for publication, (c) attendance at professional conferences, and (d) active involvement in research. Findings were then contrasted to findings …

Science In The Middle School Revisited: Contrasting 1965 With 1990, David P. Butts, Rosalina V. Hairston, Wyatt Anderson Mar 1992

Science In The Middle School Revisited: Contrasting 1965 With 1990, David P. Butts, Rosalina V. Hairston, Wyatt Anderson

Faculty Publications

Describing science as middle school students experience it continues to be a challenge. The science that students experience in the classroom is that which their teachers have selected and organized for them. This selection/organization process is itself guided by the teacher's knowledge base and the expectations of the schooling context. Presented here is a contrast practiced in the middle school in 1990 with 1965. The findings show that while teachers today may be better prepared in terms of academic courses, they are still not being adequately prepared to work with the emerging adolescent in the middle school.

Multinational Corporate-Investment And Womens' Participation In Higher-Education In Noncore Nations, Roger D. Clark Jan 1992

Multinational Corporate-Investment And Womens' Participation In Higher-Education In Noncore Nations, Roger D. Clark

Faculty Publications

This article posits a theoretical connection between multinational corporate (MNC) investment and women's participation in higher education in noncore nations. It suggests that because MNC investment encourages a "breed-and-feed" ideology for women, the prejudicial hiring of men in high-status occupations, and the lack of state regulation of gender discrimination, its presence skews the demand for higher education away from women. Panel regression analyses of data from 66 noncore and 44 peripheral nations indicate considerable support for this position.

The Influence Of Content Development On The Effectiveness Of Instruction, Judith E. Rink, Karen E. French, Peter H. Werner, Susan Lynn, Amy Mays Jan 1992

The Influence Of Content Development On The Effectiveness Of Instruction, Judith E. Rink, Karen E. French, Peter H. Werner, Susan Lynn, Amy Mays

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect on student learning of different ways of structuring student practice of complex motor skills. Previous research indicated that students who practiced the volleyball set and serve with a four-step progression learned more than students who practiced only the final test for the same number of practice trials; the effect of motivation and practice focused on specific learning cues was unclear. The present study investigated the specific role of progression, refinement, and motivation in learning the volleyball set and serve. Ninth-grade students were randomly assigned to one of five groups: (a) …

An Approach To The Evaluation Of Elt Preparation Programs, Stephen J. Gaies Jan 1992

An Approach To The Evaluation Of Elt Preparation Programs, Stephen J. Gaies

Faculty Publications

Discussion of the evaluation of training programs for teachers of English as a Second Language consists of: (1) characterization of general approaches; (2) review of reasons for interest in program evaluation; and (3) description of a University of Northern Iowa (UNI) evaluation project that uses a portfolio approach extending 3 years beyond program completion. At UNI; assessment of teacher trainees occurs at four points in the trainee's career: at declaration of undergraduate ESL major; at approximately the second semester of the junior year; during the last undergraduate semester; and 1-3 years after graduation. The principal method used is evaluation of …

Math Student Teachers: How Well Prepared Are They?, Richard G. Stahlhut Jan 1992

Math Student Teachers: How Well Prepared Are They?, Richard G. Stahlhut

Faculty Publications

This study was conducted to find out how well mathematics majors at the University of Northern Iowa were prepared in the foundations of effective teaching practices and how well they performed during the student teaching experience. Data were gathered from mathematics student teachers (N=22) who were observed; interviewed; and asked to keep daily journals. Results suggest that mathematics teacher education students: (1) be required to create practical problems for pupils for every mathematics course in grades 7-12; (2) be required to take a course that deals with writing across the curriculum so they can better incorporate English into their classroom …
