Toward An Intercultural Perspective Of Racial And Ethnic Minority College Student Persistence, Samuel D. Museus, Stephen John Quaye

Samuel D Museus

Six of every 10 Black and Latina/o undergraduates who begin higher education at a four-year institution will fail to earn a bachelor’s degree within six years. These low rates of attainment are accompanied by negative consequences for individual students and the larger society. Consequently, scholars have advocated for the importance of considering new perspectives of minority college student persistence in higher education research. This study is aimed at generating a new intercultural framework for understanding racial/ethnic minority student persistence processes using existing literature and the voices of students of color. Implications for future research and practice are discussed.

The Sister Libraries Partnership Program: A Carnegie Mellon University Libraries Pilot Project, Daniel R. Hood

Daniel R Hood

In 2005 the Carnegie Mellon University Libraries received a grant from the Eden Hall Foundation called Information Literacy for the Region. A key aspect of this grant encourages collaboration between Carnegie Mellon University Libraries and local school and public libraries on information literacy initiatives. An Information Literacy Fellow position was created to plan and administer these initiatives. Ideas for collaborative activities spawned from a focus group discussion held at Carnegie Mellon in summer 2006. Western Pennsylvania School Librarians Association members and Carnegie Mellon librarians got together to discuss how to foster interest in local, grass roots information literacy projects. Lack …

The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate the experiences and perceptions of college sexual assault survivors who seek formal, on-campus action against their perpetrators. The authors interviewed seven female survivors from various institutions across the country and compiled themes and suggestions relating to their experiences. Participants reported substantial dissatisfaction with both the on-campus judicial process and the outcome of that process. They also noted several key positive aspects of the on-campus judicial system. Implications for counselors and other professionals who support rape survivors are discussed.

Innovative Teaching In Hrd Graduate And Undergraduate Education, Susan R. Madsen, Wendy E.A. Ruona

Susan R. Madsen

There have been few forums within the Academy of Human Resource Development (HRD) to discuss HRD education. We have had limited opportunities to share innovative teaching and learning techniques, pedagogies, projects, assignments, technologies, and ideas. As a dynamic discipline it is important that current and future HRD faculty continuously learn and change teaching methods and curricula to parallel the latest pedagogical knowledge and research, as teaching goals should focus on effectively facilitating student learning in our own courses and programs. Clearly since our field is strongly based on adult learning and training and development, we (as faculty) should be utilizing …

Shaping The Future: Strategic Planning For Small Colleges And Universities., Jamie Comstock, Rand Ziegler

Jayne Marie Comstock

This paper addresses the importance of strategic planning as a precursor to assessing organizational performance and outlines a change model that has been used successfully at a small college with limited resources. Grounded in extant executive planning processes, this new model demystifies the strategic planning process and establishes procedures that address the practical and logistical issues associated with facilitating a planning process and ensuring that the plan becomes a document that espouses realistic goals, inspires and motivates members of the campus community, and actually provides direction for departments as they create their work plans and allocate resources.
