Examining Pre-Service Teachers' Instructional Strategies For Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge Via Video-Conferencing, Hsiu-Jen Cheng, Hong Zhan

This action research observes instructional strategies and appropriateness of the strategies that pre-service teachers have applied during their training based on the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) training model. Participants include 14 pre-service teachers who were enrolled in a Distance Education training course in Taiwan. During the course, pre-service teachers were trained to develop teaching skills based on the TPACK training model and applied their skills in video-conferencing teaching which involved 14 American students who were learning Mandarin Chinese as a Foreign Language (CFL) in an intermediate level course in the United States. The issue of teacher accountability has been a part of the educational conversation for three decades, but only recently has this conversation been translated into policy as states begin directly tying teacher evaluation scores in part to student achievement on standardized tests. This qualitative study focuses on a group of teachers who are participating in this new form of evaluation (containing both qualitative and quantitative elements including test scores and lesson observations) and examines how they perceived the process. The study presented in this article examines the use of comic books, TOON comic books, during guided reading. The instruction with this comic book series was provided to struggling readers, kindergarten through fifth grade,
by the pre-service teachers enrolled in the Early Literacy and Literacy Assessment and Applications courses at a comprehensive university in southeastern United States. Results indicate that instruction with the TOON comic books helps students to develop in their literacy skills.

Education and literacy researchers have acknowledged educational merit in reading instruction that integrates authentic reading texts, such as comic books, which meet the needs of today’s multi-modal learners. This qualitative multi-case study explores how three pre-service teachers use a comic book series known as TOON books during guided reading instruction to improve the literacy skills of three elementary students in third and sixth grades who struggled with reading and/or writing. To our knowledge, this is the first ever attempt to merge these game genres into a functional educational game.
