Institutional Research Intelligence (Iri): Go Beyond Reporting, Harry Djunaidi

Harry Djunaidi

Recent dynamic changes in the economy and education industry have forced many institutions to operate with a tight if not a smaller budget. Some schools have to freeze faculty’s and staff’s salary increase in order to stay afloat. Others have to reduce students’ services and at some points also lower the quality of delivered services to the students by increasing the class size. In order to cope with the new realities, colleges have no other choice, but to increase their operational efficiency. The Institutional Research Intelligent (IRI) is a new tool which will help higher education administrators such as the …

Developing Students’ Research Skills In The Undergraduate Public Relations Writing Course: A Framework For ‘Real World’ Success., Douglas J. Swanson Ed.D Apr

Douglas J. Swanson, Ed.D APR

Those of us who teach in higher education are in a time of continually diminishing resources. Our budgets have been cut, but our class sizes and teaching loads continue to increase. There’s an unceasing drumbeat from the profession to better prepare our students with social media skills demanded in the workplace (Cahill, 2009). In the education of public relations undergraduates in particular, there seems to never be enough time or resources for faculty to teach students all the new skills needed – let alone the basics. Outside of class, faculty struggle to find time for research. Our long-delayed projects sit …

Assessment Of Student Learning In The Department Of Communications: A Successful Faculty Collaboration, Douglas J. Swanson Ed.D Apr

Douglas J. Swanson, Ed.D APR

As recently as 2010, our department was noted for its inability to operationalize a program of assessment of student learning. Although several faculty members had presented strong and noteworthy proposals, the department as a whole had not implemented any assessment plan. In January 2011, the department was represented at the university’s assessment retreat. At that time, a four-year plan was developed that identifies seven learning outcomes for all Communications majors and has procedures for measuring and evaluating student learning across the core curriculum and all five of the subject concentrations. Extensive supportive policy was developed. Documentation was made available to …

The Role Of Universities In Achieving National And International Priorities: A Closer Look At Education, Research And Innovation, Hadi Salehi, Melor Md Yunus, Zeinab Salehi

Hadi Salehi

Universities are regarded as fundamental factors to the achievement of many national and international priorities. Universities are the only places where the ideas and rationales are brought together, and which make them the strongest providers of the rational explanation and meaning that societies need. Investments in the universities are increasingly based upon the belief that the science labs in research-intensive universities can be the source of a continuous stream of people and ideas that will spawn innovative and fast growing companies to form a knowledge-based economy. In teaching, universities shape new people, and in research, they create new possibilities. The …

As the world grows increasingly interconnected, as global jobs become competitive, the need for a super educational standard in Nigeria can no longer be over-emphasized. We live in a world where the most valuable skill you can sell is knowledge. Revolutions in technology and communication have created an entire economy of high-tech, high wage jobs that can be located anywhere there is an internet connection. Today, a child in Lagos is not only competing for jobs with thousands of persons in Accra but …

Political Efficacy And Introductory Political Science Course: Findings From A Survey Of A Large Public University, Miguel Centellas, Cy Rosenblatt

Miguel Centellas

We conducted a survey of the student population enrolled in undergraduate introductory- level courses in political science at a large public university. We were interested to test whether completing undergraduate introductory-level courses in political science had any effects on political efficacy, using some standard indicators (drawn from the ANES battery), at the individual level. Our findings suggest that earning a high grade (when controlling for various other factors) does seem to positively affect internal political efficacy at the individual level, but that the most important factor affecting external political efficacy is the number of courses completed. However, we found no …

Turbulence, Perturbance, And Educational Change, Brian Beabout Jan 2012

Turbulence, Perturbance, And Educational Change, Brian Beabout

Brian R. Beabout

While scholarship on educational change has long accepted that disruptions to the status quo are an essential part of the change process, disruption has never been more central to planned change than it is in the current political context in the USA, where legislation has mandated school closure, reconstitution, and turnaround as required remedies for schools failing to produce annual student achievement gains required by government. We are also unfortunately hampered by the imprecise language that surrounds complexity- based theories of educational change. Words such as perturbance, turbulence, and disruption all have gained currency lately, but meanings are unclear and …

Unchallenged, Professed Core Values: Do Undergraduate Fraternity/Sorority Members Actually Benefit In The Areas Of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, And Friendship?, Larry D. Long

Larry D. Long

Fraternities and sororities promote the ideals of scholarship, leadership, service, and friendship. Little or no research, however, has demonstrated that college students who join fraternal organizations actually grow in these areas as a result of their fraternal experience. The purpose of this descriptive study was to assess the extent to which fraternity and sorority members experienced gains in the four outcome areas. The researcher analyzed the aggregate results of 15 Southeastern institutions that administered the AFA/EBI Fraternity/Sorority Assessment during the 2008/2009 academic year. The results revealed the respondents did experience gains related to the espoused values of scholarship, leadership, service, …
