What And How Do Students Learn In An Interprofessional Student-Run Clinic? An Educational Framework For Teambased Care, Désirée A. Lie, Christopher Forest, Anne Walsh, Yvonne Banzali, Kevin Lohenry Aug 2016

What And How Do Students Learn In An Interprofessional Student-Run Clinic? An Educational Framework For Teambased Care, Désirée A. Lie, Christopher Forest, Anne Walsh, Yvonne Banzali, Kevin Lohenry

Christopher Forest

Background: The student-run clinic (SRC) has the potential to address interprofessional learning among
health professions students.
Purpose: To derive a framework for understanding student learning during team-based care provided in an
interprofessional SRC serving underserved patients.
Methods: The authors recruited students for a focus group study by purposive sampling and snowballing.
They constructed two sets of semi-structured questions for uniprofessional and multiprofessional groups.
Sessions were audiotaped, and transcripts were independently coded and adjudicated. Major themes about
learning content and processes were extracted. Grounded theory was followed after data synthesis and
interpretation to establish a framework for interprofessional …

The Use Of Visual Arts As A Window To Diagnosing Medical Pathologies, Katrina A. Bramstedt Jul 2016

The Use Of Visual Arts As A Window To Diagnosing Medical Pathologies, Katrina A. Bramstedt

Katrina A. Bramstedt

Observation is a key step preceding diagnosis, prognostication, and treatment. Careful patient observation is a skill that is learned but rarely explicitly taught. Furthermore, proper clinical observation requires more than a glance; it requires attention to detail. In medical school, the art of learning to look can be taught using the medical humanities and especially visual arts such as paintings and film. Research shows that such training improves not only observation skills but also teamwork, listening skills, and reflective and analytical thinking. Overall, the use of visual arts in medical school curricula can build visual literacy: the capacity to identify …

A Model Lightning Safety Policy For Athletics., Brian Bennett M.Ed May 2016

A Model Lightning Safety Policy For Athletics., Brian Bennett M.Ed

Brian Bennett, M.Ed

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this paper is to present a model policy on lightning safety for athletic trainers.

BACKGROUND: Among college athletic programs in the United States there is a serious lack of written policy on lightning safety. Available evidence shows that most National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I institutions, even though they are located in high lightning activity areas of the country, do not have formal, written lightning safety policies.

CLINICAL ADVANTAGES/ RECOMMENDATIONS: The policy presented herein, which is at the forefront of such policies, is the lightning safety policy written as part of a policies and procedures …

National Athletic Trainers' Association Position Statement: Lightning Safety For Athletics And Recreation., K M Walsh, Brian Bennett M.Ed, M A Cooper, R L Holle, R Kithil, R E López

Brian Bennett

OBJECTIVE: To educate athletic trainers and others about the dangers of lightning, provide lightning-safety guidelines, define safe structures and locations, and advocate prehospital care for lightning-strike victims.

BACKGROUND: Lightning may be the most frequently encountered severe-storm hazard endangering physically active people each year. Millions of lightning flashes strike the ground annually in the United States, causing nearly 100 deaths and 400 injuries. Three quarters of all lightning casualties occur between May and September, and nearly four fifths occur between 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM, which coincides with the hours for most athletic or recreational activities. Additionally, lightning casualties from sports …

Many schools seek to predict performance on national exams required for medical school graduation using prematriculation and medical school performance data. The need for targeted intervention strategies for at-risk students has led much of this interest. Assumptions that preadmission data and high stakes in-house medical exams correlate strongly with national standardized exam performance needs to be examined. Looking at prematriculation data for predicting USMLE Step 1 performance, we found that MCAT exam totals and math-science GPA had the best prediction from a set of prematriculation values (adjusted R 2 = 11.7 %) for step 1. The addition of scores from …

Inter-Rater Variability As Mutual Disagreement: Identifying Raters’ Divergent Points Of View, A. Gingerich, Susan E. Ramlo Dec 2015

Inter-Rater Variability As Mutual Disagreement: Identifying Raters’ Divergent Points Of View, A. Gingerich, Susan E. Ramlo

Susan E Ramlo

Whenever multiple observers provide ratings, even of the same performance,
inter-rater variation is prevalent. The resulting ‘idiosyncratic rater variance’ is considered
to be unusable error of measurement in psychometric models and is a threat to the
defensibility of our assessments. Prior studies of inter-rater variation in clinical assessments
have used open response formats to gather raters’ comments and justifications. This
design choice allows participants to use idiosyncratic response styles that could result in a
distorted representation of the underlying rater cognition and skew subsequent analyses. In
this study we explored rater variability using the structured response format of Q
methodology. …

Evaluating Interprofessional Team Performance: A Faculty Rater Tool, Christopher Forest, Désirée A. Lie, Sae Byul (Sarah) Ma

Christopher Forest

Introduction: Reliable team assessment has become a priority because of growing emphasis on
interprofessional education and team-based care. Objective rating scales are needed to evaluate
interprofessional student teams and individuals and provide real-time feedback. Methods: In response to
a need for behavioral rating scales, we modified the McMaster-Ottawa Scale from a 9-point to a 3-point
scale and added descriptive behavioral anchors to define three levels of competency (i.e., below, at, and
above expected). This modification is intended to provide consistent rating of individuals and teams in
patient settings. We then developed a demonstration video using actors representing four professions to …
