This Capstone Project focused on improving students’ agricultural literacy through the implementation of a lesson on agriculture. The participants for this Capstone Project included 23 third-grade students in a public elementary school located in Monterey County. The Capstone Project consisted of a lesson on agriculture. This focused on improving students’ agricultural literacy and exposed them to new topics that fostered connections to agriculture and products they use, eat, and see everyday. Addressing The Climate Change Consensus Gap Among Preservice Teachers: A Four-Faceted Approach, Grinell Smith, Colette Rabin

In this paper, we report an estimate of the magnitude of the “consensus gap” – the gap between what scientists know about climate change and what the general public thinks they know – about anthropomorphic climate change among K-8 pre-service teachers. We also report qualitative findings about the utility of a four-faceted approach to teaching about climate change designed explicitly to mitigate inductive reasoning errors and to reduce in-group favoritism, attribution bias, inter-group conflict, and confirmation bias. This reflection and study of our classrooms looks to better understand both our use of technology and students’ use of technology in very specific ways. Marion Primary School is located 10 kilometres south of the Adelaide CBD. There is a high level of student transience due in part to the mobility of families in short-term rental accommodation, which includes parents who are students at the nearby Flinders University. Students come from a diversity of cultural backgrounds with more than 14 countries represented in the school. In 2018, there were 21 students enrolled who identified as being of Indigenous descent. Education and literacy researchers have acknowledged educational merit in reading instruction that integrates authentic reading texts, such as comic books, which meet the needs of today’s multi-modal learners. Teacher quality is among the strongest correlates of student outcomes. However, only about a quarter of the nation’s elementary teachers consider themselves qualified to teach science. In this descriptive and exploratory study, we investigated whether helping pre-service teacher candidates explore connections between science and issues of equity, particularly around sustainability issues, could help them see the importance of teaching science to their students more often. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected from 59 students enrolled in revised science methods courses at a large public university.
