Using Outdoor Experiential Training To Stimulate Emotional Intelligence Competencies And Group Leadership Skills Among Undergraduate Students, David Noer, Rex Waters

This study reports on the use of outdoor experiential training as a methodology for accelerating the group citizenship and leadership behaviors of undergraduate students. Using the emotional intelligence foundational skills of interpersonal competence and intrapersonal insight as a frame of reference for skill acquisition and measurement, it outlines the results of a self-assessment instrument and a small group problem solving exercise. Students reported a significant increase in group citizenship skills and the problem solving exercise indicated behavioral manifestations of these skills. This research investigated the relationship between the leader's perception of their power base and the follower's perception of the leader's power base. Two research questions focused the research. Leaders attempt to influence follower behavior (Weber, 1947; Lewin, 1951; Dahl, 1957). Hersey (1969) suggests that leadership equals influence. Furthermore, leadership is closely related to the concept of power (Stodgill, 19 74). Yukl (1989) concluded that French and Raven's work (1959) enjoyed wide acceptance in trying to define the type of leadership. Independent Auditor's Opinions Of Substantial Doubt: A Sox-2002 Markets Efficiency Evaluation, Jeff Grover

This study determined that cumulative abnormal stock returns of an auditor portfolio of firms with substantial doubt were positive but non-significant for a 23-event week period following the release of independent auditor opinions but transitioned to positive and significant for the remainder of the 35-event week window. The non-significant period supports the semi-strong form of the efficient markets hypothesis (EMH), which suggests that these opinions were quickly and efficiently absorbed by the firms' market value. Presence Of Informed Trading In Options Markets: An Experiment Using Monte Carlo Simulation, Rafiqul Bhuyan, Mohammad Robbani, Yuxing Van

Using Monte Carlo Simulation we show that informed trading take place in the options market. Our results indicate that at-the-money option contracts are less likely to be information based trades. Using Black-Scholes model to evaluate call and put options, we find that with positive and negative information shocks, informed investors are better off trading out-of-the-money and/or in-the-money-options. This is clear evidence that investors with inside or superior information would take advantage of options' leverage effect, Black (1975). Our analysis sheds light on the direction to revisit the models proposed by Easley et al (1998) and Chan et al (2002). We …

Managerial leadership is difficult to comprehensively define. A holistic understanding of managerial leadership is best obtained through examining and integrating multiple models. Four leadership models are reviewed from a historical, definitional, and applicatory perspective. The four models include three well-known, heavily researched theories (situational, transformational, and path-goal) and one relative newcomer (grass roots). Each model provides significant insights into the nature of true leadership, and the combination of these four models provides a holistic overview of leadership. After reviewing each model, the paper addresses points of convergence and divergence in order to provide a comprehensive understanding of managerial leadership.

Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations contains many of the basic tenets of capitalism Less well known is Smith's discussion of the state of education in the late eighteenth century in the latter chapters of the Wealth of Nations. Smith offers a detailed examination of professorial and administrative motivations of his day. Smith's analysis has direct application to many of the same problems that educational critics today have identified. This paper presents Smith's observations in the context of the controversies identified in today's educational reform movement.

Transform Or Transact? Which Leader Gets Better Results? A Meta - Analysis, Jay Mulki, Fernando Jaramillo, William Locander

This study used meta-analysis to investigate the relationship between leadership style and job performance in sales settings. Specifically, the research investigates whether transformational or transactional leadership is more appropriate in creating a high performing sales environment. Results indicate that transformational leadership is positively and significantly related to salesperson’s job performance, whereas the relationship between transactional leadership and job performance is mixed. Also, results suggest that the relationship between transformational leadership and job performance is stronger when subjective, rather than objective, measures of job performance are used.

Firm Performance And Insider Trading: A Comparison Between Voluntary And Involuntary Bankruptcy Filings, Jeffrey Donaldson, Robert Weigand

We compare the financial performance and insider trading characteristics of firms finding for voluntary bankruptcy with firms that are petitioned into bankruptcy involuntarily by their creditors. We find that shareholders of firms filing for voluntary bankruptcy experience significantly greater losses around the bankruptcy announcement than shareholders of involuntary filers. We also find that insiders of firms filing voluntarily are net sellers of their firm's shares in the years leading up to bankruptcy, vs. net buying by insiders of involuntary filers. Moreover, firms filing voluntary bankruptcy successfully reorganize less frequently and liquidate more frequently titan firms that file involuntary bankruptcy. These …

Earnings Whisper Forecasts As Predictors Of Security Returns: Support For The Miller Price Optimism Model, Rebecca Abraham, Charles Harrington

This study provides empirical support for the Miller (1977) model which sets forth that security returns reflect the opinions of optimists in markets where more rational and pessimistic trading is excluded by high short-sale costs. Using the differential between earnings whisper forecasts and analysts’ consensus forecasts as a proxy for heterogeneous expectations of earning, this study finds that for stacks with higher differentials, optimistic valuations dominate resulting in significantly lower future security returns than for stocks with lower differentials. Low differentials stacks are shown to resemble value stacks while high differential stocks display the characteristics of glamour stocks.

Role Of Emotional Intelligence Within Transactional/Transformational Leadership, Natalie Ferres, Tony Travaglione, Grant O'Neill

This study explored the role of emotional intelligence (E1) within transactional-transformational Leadership and examined the impact of each leadership style on trust in leaders and trust in the Organization. Results from 448 public-sector employees slowed that leader El was positively correlated with transformational leadership and transactional-contingent-reward ratings. Leader E1 had a significant and positive relationship with total transactional leadership. Transformational leadership and contingent-reward were both found to be significant positive influences on trust in immediate leader and trust in the organization, confirming expectation. In contradiction to the final hypotheses, transactional leadership also played a significant part in trust scores.

The increasing use of electronic monitoring has resulted in considerable debate among the public, labor groups, business groups, and increasingly among academicians. However, electronic monitoring research to date has been lacking and contradictory. This paper applies organizational behavior modification theories to argue that, when properly implemented, electronic monitoring can be an effective motivational tool. Organizational decisions regarding purpose and disclosure of monitoring, feedback source and monitoring related standards are theorized to affect the relationship between monitoring and employee motivation.

A panel data analysis was used to assess the effects of selected team and market variables on attendance in the English Premier League (EPL). The results confirmed that (a) winning percentage remained a determinant for increasing attendance: (b) soccer consumers of tile EPL were from middle and lower socio-economic classes: (c) newly built or renovated stadiums were significant in increasing attendance, but this only appeared valid for an initial few years: (d) a competitive attitude among spectators between rival teams promoted loyalty, and team identification, consequently increasing attendance; and (e) a promotional strategy of cross-market territories is advisable for sport …

Emotional intelligence has received increased attention in recent years. Much of this attention is due to research that supports a direct relationship between emotional intelligence and positive organizational behaviors. However, little research has investigated the moderating effects of emotional intelligence. This paper addresses this gap in the literature by investigating the moderating effect of emotional intelligence tilt the emotional labor and burnout relationship. Results support significant direct relationships of both emotional labor and emotional intelligence on burnout. The self-awareness dimension of emotional intelligence also moderated the emotional labor and burnout relationship. Implications f or research and practice are discussed.

This paper is an attempt to develop a typology which would theoretically represent the relationship between a patent strategy and a business strategy in a given organization. Such a relationship follows from previous work in related fields which theories a linkage between business strategy and functional strategy that can have a positive impact on organizational performance. An underling assumption is made that intellectual capital represents a functional area for today's high tech firm. In creating the proposed typology, use is made of the Miles and Snow typology of business strategies.

This study empirically examines the effect of an article teaching approach on student test scores. In a between subjects design, 40 students learned introductory budgeting concepts under all active approach, and 42 were presented the same material via lecture. Test scores reveal that students in the active condition performed better than the lecture group test questions were essays involving synthesis of concepts. When tested for acquisition of factual knowledge using multiple choice questions, the two groups did not differ. The study extends the existing literature in two ways. This study investigated differences in student satisfaction between qualitative and quantitative courses across three modalities: online, on ground and blended. With 21,000 respondents results indicate there are significant differences in student satisfaction between qualitative and quantitative courses. Satisfaction was higher for qualitative courses across all three modalities; it was highest for the online modify for both qualitative and quantitative courses.

Genetics-related research is rapidly developing increased understanding of the genes that underlie most human as well as the molecular processes in which these genes take part. It is reasonable for educators to assume that many learning-related traits will he found to have a genetic basis and that genetic testing will someday allow educators to access this learning-related information for each student. Knowledge of learning preferences would enable advisors, instructors and the students themselves to more closely match student needs with the appropriate educational environments and teaching methods. At the extreme, this information could make possible truly personalized education.
