Six Propositions Of A Social Theory Of Numeracy: Interpreting An Influential Theory Of Literacy, Jeffrey Craig, Lynette Guzmán

We share our experiences comprehending social theory as it applies to numeracy scholarship. We build on existing arguments that social theory—explicitly acknowledging the presence and influence of histories, power, and purposes—offers something important to scholars who study and discuss numeracy. In this article, we translate the six propositions of one particular social theory of literacy into propositions about numeracy, then we explore the meaning of each proposition, its connections to existing scholarship, and its implications. Abstract: Secondary science teachers outline strategies for developing, presenting, and assessing literacy skills in the content based classroom. A content-area literacy assessment was administered to over 400 students from grades 8-12. Using the data, literacy materials were developed that supported a variety of content areas. This article outlines the two year progress of this collaborative teacher group which includes the integration of reading materials from a novel, Andy Weir’s The Martian, and development of assessment questions related to this text that fostered middle and high school students’ ability to process prose, quantitative and documentative text and develop literacy in the …

This paper shares the “how to’s” of putting on a family math night at an elementary school in South Florida. The paper discusses the importance of parent involvement and knowing about the standards and how math, science, and literacy are taught in schools today. The paper provides concrete steps for setting up a family night with suggested activities and organizational ideas to involve teachers, students, and parents at the school.
