Teaching Culturally and Linguistically Diverse International Students in Open or Online Learning Environments: A Research Symposium
The objective of this paper is to discuss the use of cross-disciplinary partnerships to design and implement a creative writing workshop for English-language learners (ELLs) in an online setting. The methodology utilized collaborative, cross-disciplinary feedback and revision cycles to identify key areas of consideration in facilitating the workshop. The findings revealed cultural and grammatical considerations, emotional nuance considerations, idiomatic language considerations, and internal translation and time considerations in the creative writing process for ELLs. An Investigation Into The Effects Of Covid-Related School Policies On The Teaching And Learning Of English As A Second Or Foreign Language, Gordon Moulden
Teaching Culturally and Linguistically Diverse International Students in Open or Online Learning Environments: A Research Symposium
The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of COVID-related campus access restrictions on the teaching and learning of English as a second or additional language. A mixed-methods survey of ESL teachers, followed by optional structured interviews, was chosen as the research design. Results showed that the requirement to move instruction wholly, or partially, to an online format created emotional and cognitive hardships for students, but a rich professional-development opportunity for teachers as they dealt with the challenges of online instruction. Like other academic libraries, librarians at a regional comprehensive university had to switch from in-person to online synchronous information literacy sessions due to COVID-19. The Coordinator of Information Literacy has served as psychology librarian for over two years and worked with faculty to incorporate library instruction in all sections of the required research methods and senior seminar courses. Active learning was a central component of these in-person sessions, which included database searching and an exercise for students to understand the difference between primary/empirical and secondary/review literature.
