Lecture Versus Collaborative Learning Methods In Community College Classrooms, Gwendolyn A. Vaughn
Lecture Versus Collaborative Learning Methods In Community College Classrooms, Gwendolyn A. Vaughn
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Abstract
Educational scholars have recommended using collaborative learning in higher education classrooms to improve the learning outcomes of community college students. The problem is that many community college instructors continue to use traditional lecture methods, which might be due to instructors not being convinced of the merits of collaborative learning. The purpose of this quasi-experimental, causal-comparative, repeated measures, research study was to examine the difference between pre- and posttest change scores on the Personal Community Health assessment of students who were taught with the collaborative method and students who were taught with the lecture method. The theoretical foundation for this …

Adults' Use Of Mobile Learning Environments While Enrolled In General Educational Development Classes, Tia Wilkinson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Mobile learning environments (MLEs) offer ubiquitous learning opportunities for adults in General Educational Development (GED) programs. However, MLEs have not been integrated into most adult GED programs; therefore, little is known about the experiences of adult learners who use MLEs as part of their education. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore how adult learners described making connections within MLEs, how they perceived learning with MLEs, and how they expanded their use of MLEs. The principles of connectivism provided the conceptual framework for the study. Participants were 11 adult learners in GED programs in a Southern urban …
Third Grade Math Teachers’ Perceptions Of Their Preparedness To Teach The Standards For The Staar Math Test, Diana L. Everman
Third Grade Math Teachers’ Perceptions Of Their Preparedness To Teach The Standards For The Staar Math Test, Diana L. Everman
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Teacher professional development (PD) is acknowledged as an effective approach for changing teachers’ beliefs, practices, and behaviors to raise student academic achievement. A rural school district identified that 3rd grade math teachers felt inadequately prepared to teach the College and Career Readiness and Academic Standards (CCRS) standards for the state math assessment (STAAR). The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore third grade math teachers’ perceptions of their preparedness to meet the demands of the new third grade STAAR math test. Vygotsky’s constructivist theory from an adult learning perspective and Bandura’s self-efficacy theory guided the study. The research …
