The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between undergraduate students' mental health and their engagement in the educational experience. The researcher identified traditionally-aged college students (18-23) who were flourishing and distinguished them from students who were moderately mentally healthy and/or languishing according to Keyes' (2002) continuum of mental health model. Mental health was the dependent variable. Student involvement was defined as the extent to which students engage in empirically derived good educational practices as measured by the National Survey of Student Engagement's College Student Report (2005). Developmental styles and strategies (DSS) are preferences and repeated patterns in intentional self-development. A taxonomy of DSS based on the convergence of talent development and Sternberg's Triarchic Model of Intelligences was proposed to distinguish school learners, street learners, talent developers (specialists), and all-knowers (generalists). This study explored the reliability of the researcher-developed Educational Developmental Style and Strategy Scale, the relationships of age, gender, birth order, ethnicity, and SES to developmental DSS adoption, and the characteristics of five types of DSS adopters (i.e., street learning specialists, street learning generalists, school learning specialists, school learning generalists, the neutral group). This study investigates the variance in critical thinking dispositions between arts and non-arts undergraduates using quantitative data from the California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory (CCTDI), a survey instrument. Data were collected from a sample of 141 undergraduates at a large, urban, public university on the east coast. The population consisted of four groups: freshmen non-arts students, freshmen arts students, junior and senior non-arts students, and junior and senior arts students.;of the four groups which were compared, the junior and senior arts subjects showed the greatest mean total score on the CCTDI. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between student achievement and home socialization. Specifically, it explored the influence of cognitive and academic home socialization variables on the achievement of seventh- and twelfth-grade students. It further explored the influence of cognitive and academic subvariables on student achievement. The cognitive home socialization subvariables were stimulating literacy environment and joint learning activities. The purposes of this study were to explore the relationships between teacher efficacy and changes in teacher behavior and student learning espoused by the standards-based reform movement and to examine the impact of a curriculum innovation on student learning and teacher efficacy The study was designed to target sophisticated pedagogical behavior associated with setting high learner expectations.;The context for the research was a federally funded project to develop and implement model lessons in elementary social studies in an urban setting. The purpose of this study was to investigate National Certified Counselors and relationships between their experience, credentials, ego development, and conceptual level. Benefits to continuing education requirements, developmental growth, and counselor insight were identified as justification for the research. It was hypothesized that there would be statistically significant positive correlations between counselor experience, credentials, ego development, and conceptual level. Four hundred (400) National Certified Counselors were randomly selected and contacted by mail survey using a General Questionnaire, Loevinger's Sentence Completion Test, and Hunt's Paragraph Completion Method. One hundred and thirty-four (134) responses were received. Significant correlations were found supporting previous …

The purpose of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of light/sound technology to promote sensory integration which facilitates the learning capacity of children with autism by reducing their high state of arousal, increasing time on task and decreasing acting-out behaviors. This research extended the work of A. Jean Ayres and Lorna King who theorized that the autistic individual's brain does not register, modulate or integrate sensations that most people notice; auditory and visual inputs are ignored more than other types of sensory stimuli. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of visualization in the treatment of adolescents who abuse substances. This study measured whether the use of visualization had an impact on levels of depression, acting out behavior and ego development.;The sample consisted of 63 teenagers between the ages of 13 and 18 who had been referred to a residential group home by the court system. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a social skills training program designed to improve the social status of isolated and rejected children. Subjects were fourth and fifth grade students from two different elementary schools. One school served as the control group and the other one was the experimental group.;The sample consisted of 91 identified students from both schools. A nonequivalent control group research design was used. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether counselors differed in their interaction patterns when counseling school-age girls as compared to school-age boys when measured by the communication categories of indirect-statements (feeling statements), direct statements (information statements), interrupting the client, and being interrupted by the client. Videotapes of counseling sessions were made from existing videotapes of counseling sessions conducted by the staff of the PACES Family Counseling Center at The College of William and Mary. Forty mothers of children with retardation and forty-one mothers of children without disabilities rated their nondisabled children on levels of in-home responsibility and psychological adjustment. Siblings of children with retardation were found to show significantly more difficulty in psychological adjustment but not more in-home responsibility. Mean scores on ratings of psychological adjustment were in the normal range for both groups. There was no relationship between the degree of responsibility the sibling had in the home and the degree of psychological difficulty. Girls in both groups had significantly more responsibility than boys. Mothers of children with disabilities did not report closer …

The purpose of this study was to develop a self-report questionnaire that would address subjective symptoms associated with seizures in adolescents. The study was a preliminary investigation as to the reliability and validity of the Seizure Disorder Questionnaire.;Two groups of subjects were studied. The seizure group consisted of 31 adolescents diagnosed with epilepsy and contacted through the Epilepsy Clinic at the Medical college of Virginia, the Comprehensive Epilepsy Clinic at the University of Virginia, Cumberland Hospital for Children and Adolescents in New Kent, Virginia, and the Williamsburg-James City County public schools. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among certain personality traits, vocational interests, and demographic factors with job satisfaction among secondary school natural science teachers. Implications for future research and educational practice were explored.;Volunteers teaching secondary school natural science classes in seven Virginia public school districts primarily in the Hampton Rhodes area were subjects for this study. The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between academic intrinsic motivation and positive teacher verbal feedback, negative teacher verbal feedback, and student aptitude for academic work. The research questions evolved from the Cognitive Evaluation Theory of Edward Deci (Deci & Ryan, 1985) in which intrinsic motivation develops out of a sense of competence and self-determination. Teachers are experiencing heightened levels of stress throughout the school day the impact of which may be seen in increased absenteeism, turnover, poor performance and waste. This study taught classroom teachers cognitive-behavioral methods to reduce and manage their professional stress comparing a Group Counseling (GC) approach with a Cooperative Professional Development (CPD) approach.;Participating classroom teachers were randomly selected for each treatment condition. The purpose of this study was to investigate the classification congruency of Virginia school psychologists as it related to assessment profile analysis and, additionally, to examine assessment instrument rankings and demographic variables when classifying targeted handicapping conditions. The targeted conditions were learning disability, educable mentally handicapped, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder/attentional problems.;The seventy-two certified Virginia school psychologists who participated in the study were each mailed identical packets containing a letter of explanation, demographic questionnaire, the test profiles for each of the handicapping conditions, and a profile for a non-handicapped child.;The data were analyzed using a discriminant analysis and a logistic …

The intelligence of moderately mentally retarded (MR) children is difficult to assess because they often have concurrent physical or sensory impairments which adversely affect their test performance. This study focused on the effectiveness of Personal Mastery Counseling (PMC), a small-group cognitive-behavioral approach to counseling. Thirty 7th grade male volunteers were assigned, 10 subjects per group, to a PMC group, a bibliotherapy group, or a No-Treatment Control group. The PMC group participated in ten 55-minute counseling sessions. The PMC group leader helped the subjects identify and eliminate self-defeating behaviors by teaching them how to set behavioral goals, accept personal responsibility, practice new behaviors, and monitor improvement. The bibliotherapy group participated in ten 55-minute sessions with assigned readings and discussions on eliminating self-defeating behaviors and improving self-concept. The No-Treatment …

This study explored the qualities that distinguished a select group of college freshmen women (National Hispanic Scholars) from a general sample of Hispanic women as assessed by the PIT (Picture Identification Test) a semi-projective systems-oriented instrument that measures motivation (Chambers, 1988). The PIT was mailed to 496 Women Scholars, and administered to self-identified Hispanic freshmen women who attended four universities in the United States for the first time in the Fall of 1990. Results were based on the responses of 99 Ss (Select Group), and 57 Ss (Regular Group) who completed the PIT and fulfilled the criteria.;The specific hypothesis tested …
