SENG Journal: Exploring the Psychology of Giftedness

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted young learners' daily routines, learning environments, and home life stability, severely impacting their well-being. Children's issues with mental health, such as anxiety, stress, and depression, significantly impact their ability and interest to achieve in school settings. Additionally, the pandemic affected parents, caregivers, and educators, which had repercussions on their children and students. The authors conducted a literature review, identifying 26 articles that reported on young children's mental health and well-being with a particular interest in the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and identified gifted children. The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a statistically significant relationship between teacher self-efficacy beliefs and teacher recommendations for student retention. An online survey served as the data source for this study. The survey link was emailed to 236 kindergarten, first, and second grade teachers in an urban Virginia school district. Teachers were asked to report the number of students recommended for retention over a two year period as well as information regarding the characteristics of the children actually retained (e.g., race, gender, SES status, etc.) over that same two year period. Substantial research supports the efficacy of early intervention services for children with developmental delays from birth to age 5. Federal legislation, IDEA, P.L. 101-476, now mandates that states provide services to infants and toddlers (Part C) and preschoolers ages 3--5 (Part B) using either categorical or noncategorical classifications.;Research relative to eligibility classifications and stability of classifications of preschool students transitioning to school age service is limited. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of one short-term training model, Parents and Children Together (PACT), on parent stress and child behavior for families enrolled in the Head Start program. PACT is a program of structured play activities designed to replicate the interactions between parents and children during the first developmental stage of life. PACT has been adapted, by the researcher, from a program called Theraplay developed for Head Start children by Ann Jernberg (1967).;Thirty families completed the study. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among competencies recommended by the Division for Early Childhood of the Council for Exceptional Children (DEC/CEC), state requirements for teacher certification, and college and university personnel preparation program requirements for educators working with children with disabilities from birth-5 years of age. The study included all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The purpose of this study was to compare three groups of students: (1) those who were served in a transitional first grade program by a teacher having an interactionist philosophy, (2) those who were previously retained in grade, and (3) a random sample of regularly promoted students. This study used the philosophical orientation of the teacher as the indicator for the type of transitional program (independent variable). The age of the student (birthdate) was also used as an independent variable. State and federal guidelines for implementing programs for the gifted have required that placement into such programs being as early as kindergarten. In order to help determine whether a child was functioning significantly above age level on certain tasks through multiple sources, a checklist for parents was developed and validated.;The parent checklist was analyzed for reliability and validity. The purpose of this study was to investigate empirically the relationship that exists between age at the time of entrance to kindergarten and academic achievement as reflected by standardized achievement scores administered in the fourth grade.
