Transgender and nonbinary people are becoming more and more visible in the United States and around the world and with this recognition come many changes. One major change is the explosion of support for inclusive language in Spanish which, though not initially created to make trans identities possible, can be used to create welcoming, affirming, and inclusive spaces for trans people, particularly nonbinary individuals who do not identify with the standard masculine and feminine morphological characteristics of Spanish. Previous literature has suggested that bilingual people react to emotional statements with varying degrees of intensity due to their personal experience with each language. Potential factors affecting emotional differences between languages included fluency, culture, age of acquisition, amount of exposure, language learning environment, and motivation. Isolating the impact of these factors on emotional experience challenges research because the factors cannot be easily controlled or separated. Using two concepts, cultural capital and gender as a social practice, this thesis explores intersections of the English language and gender norms and attitudes in the identity of young people in today’s Ukraine. Unlike many previous studies that have focused primarily on university students or school-age children and often used quantitative methods, this thesis offers qualitative analysis of the interviews I conducted with adults, who chose to continue to learn English. Hark Upon The Gayle: A Depiction Of The Experiences Of The First Women Students At William & Mary, Yi Hao, Lisa Milne

As William & Mary celebrates the 100th anniversary of admitting women students as the first public college in Virginia to institute a co-educational system, this paper explores the life and times of the women who have shaped the College’s legacy for future women students. In researching the first women at William & Mary, we have found historical documentation, such as personal papers (letters and surveys) from both women students of the class of 1918 and a prior researcher; the Flat Hat, a student-run newspaper at the College; meeting minutes from the College Board of Visitors; William & Mary President Lyon Tyler’s papers; and, administrative artifacts from the Office of the Dean of Women. The pages that follow chronicle the challenges and advancements women students and the Deans of Women encountered while contributing to gender equality at one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in America.

In the early 20th century, mathematicians and math teachers became interested in the connections between mathematics and areas of humanistic interest such as philosophy, aesthetics, music, and especially history. This thesis narrates how this interest came about and explains mathematics educators' motivation and understanding of mathematics as a humanistic discipline. Why do we report literacy rates with GDP and infant mortality rates? Why is it so important that we have a literate nation? In this thesis, I examine the three case studies of the Spanish, Cuban, and Nicaraguan literacy movements. Then, I analyze the successes and shortcomings of each. From there, I define literacy in a larger context. Using this information, I propose a "health literacy campaign", which I believe will help the current state of literacy rates in the United States.

This Honors Thesis places schools at the focus of an exploration of “post-war” Guatemala. Schools, particularly primary schools, are epicenters for civic education and the basis of historical knowledge for citizens. I seek to show that following a divisive civil war schools are an important site of contestation of national narratives. This qualitative phenomenological case study examined the intersection of organizational structures and gender, as well as perceptions of climate, and their collective impact on professional advancement opportunities of women working in lower-level positions in higher education, namely classified and professional staff (Acker, 1990; Allan, 2011; Kanter, 1977). Kanter's (1977) theory of the role of structure in organizations posits that position in the organizational hierarchy and work role influence the amount of access an employee has to information, resources, promotional opportunities, and support. Much of the literature dedicated to the academic achievement of African American males focuses on failure, obstacles, negative influences and explanations of factors that negatively impact their academic success. In 2003, the Virginia Department of Education authorized a committee of 11 teachers to write a report detailing Virginia's public education history. The committee drafted a document that provided a chronological account of the major developments in public education in Virginia from 1607 to 2003. The document provided minimal coverage of the history of Virginia's African American population, specifically during the Antebellum (1830s-1860s) and Reconstruction (1865-1871) eras. This research study was focused on teacher dispositions and practices that create positive teacher-student relationships with African-American elementary male students. Robert Pianta's work on relationships between teachers and students, over the past decade, provided a conceptual framework for this specific study. A review of the literature on this topic evidenced practices that positively and negatively impact teacher-student relationships. Through classroom observations and interviews, the perceptions of elementary teachers were examined on how they actually create teacher-student relationships with their African-American male students. To Seek The Good, The True, And Beautiful: White, Greek-Letter Sororities In The U.S. South And The Shaping Of American 'Ladyhood,' 1915--1975, Margaret Lynn Freeman

This dissertation examines the role of white, Greek-letter sororities in the creation and enforcement of standards for white women's behavior during the twentieth century. While sororities at white, southern universities first served as supportive networks for the few female students on newly coeducational university campuses, I argue that they transformed into spaces that promoted "heterosocial" activities and enforced members' heteronormativity through "lessons of 'ladyhood" and required attendance at fraternity parties and participation in heterosexual dating. as a means to guarantee their popularity among students on their respective campuses, sorority chapters sought the attention of the campuses' fraternity elite.
