The effects of the menstrual cycle (MC) on exercise metabolism and performance are equivocal. PURPOSE: To investigate whether the MC impacted submaximal exercise oxygen consumption (VO2) and Critical Power (CP) in recreationally active, eumenorrheic females. METHODS: Eight eumenorrheic females (Age: 33±8 y, VO2max: 36.9±3.8 ml/kg/min) completed fasted exercise testing in 3 distinct phases of the MC (early follicular, late follicular, and mid luteal). MC phase was determined using calendar-based counting, ovulation test strips, and confirmed via serum hormones (estrogen and progesterone). For submaximal exercise, participants cycled for 20 min at 50% VO2max while VO2 …

Endothelial dysfunction is characterized by the unbalance between vasodilatory and vasoconstrictor mechanisms. Furthermore, this is recognized as the initial step to developing cardiovascular disease. Exercise plays an important role in both cardiac rehabilitation and cardiovascular risk prevention. However, some new exercise modalities, such as high-intensity interval training (HIIT), are becoming more popular, and limited information about their effect on the endothelium is available. PURPOSE: to determine what volume of HIIT will improve endothelial function than continuous moderate exercise intensity. METHODS: Six young apparently healthy subjects were recruited for seven laboratory visits. The first visit included a graded exercise test, in …

Effects Of Endurance Training On Skeletal Muscle Mass And Inflammation In A Rat Model Of Heart Failure, Aaron Garcia, Dillon Harris, Quinten Pigg, Daniela Sayuri Inoue, Mariana Janini Gomes
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Chronic disease states including heart failure (HF) often lead to reduced physical activity, resulting in disuse and low-level systemic inflammation, which contribute to the decline in muscle mass and function. An important goal of therapy in HF patients is to counteract or prevent the development of skeletal muscle alterations in order to restore a normal functional capacity. Exercise is an established means of improving exercise capacity and quality of life in patients with HF. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the impact of an endurance program on skeletal muscle mass and inflammation in a rat model of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH)-induced …

Greater Macrovascular But Not Microvascular Function In Hispanic Adults, Justo Perez Iii, Randy Liu, Ruby A. Nyarko, Ethan Joergensen, Jasdeep Kaur
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
According to the 2023 AHA Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics update, Hispanics exhibit the highest prevalence of type II diabetes (men: 14.5%, women 12.3%) compared to non-Hispanic White (NHW men: 11.5%, women 7.7%) and Non-Hispanic Black (men: 11.8%, women 13.3%). Endothelial dysfunction is a precursor to cardiovascular diseases including type II diabetes; however, it remains unknown whether healthy asymptomatic Hispanic adults present a reduced endothelial function before the onset of cardiovascular symptoms. Although two previous studies have compared the endothelial function in Hispanic and Non-Hispanic White individuals, these studies included smokers and obese individuals. PURPOSE: To date, no study …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Young healthy non-Hispanic Black (BL) adults have an attenuated increase in blood flow to working skeletal muscle during exercise compared to non-Hispanic white (WH) adults. Cerebral blood flow also increases during exercise; however, previous work has mainly included WH adults. There are no studies investigating potential differences in cerebral vascular responses to exercise in BL adults. PURPOSE: To compare middle cerebral artery velocity (MCAv) and cerebral vascular conductance index (CVCi) during exercise in BL adults to WH adults. We tested the hypothesis that BL adults have a blunted increase in MCAvmean and CVCi response during light and moderate intensity …

Acrobatics and tumbling is a women’s sport comprised of 3 different positions: base, top, and tumbler. Each position endures substantial impact on the musculotendinous unit, however, tumblers experience the greatest lower extremity eccentric impact leading to a high injury rate. Consistent athlete monitoring may lead to injury prevention and better insights into training. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to pilot observational differences in jump height (JH), peak propulsive force (PPF), peak braking force (PBF), and peak landing force (PLF) during the counter movement jump (CMJ) in acrobatics and tumbling between tumbler and non-tumbler athletes during a …

Blood Pressure Variability In Young Male Adult Habitual Vapers, Rie V. Conley, Claire E. Kissell, Ziba Taherzadeh, Danny Dubroy, Benjamin E. Young, Ziyad Ben Taleb, Paul J. Fadel
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The use of e-cigarettes (i.e., vaping) has risen dramatically in the last few years. Vaping is more appealing and accessible to young people than traditional smoking. The ease of use can increase the frequency of vaping, which may increase the amount of nicotine consumed. Nicotine is a potent vasoconstrictor that may also affect blood pressure (BP). Indeed, previous studies have shown that traditional cigarette smoking increases BP variability. This is noteworthy because elevated BP variability has been shown to predict future development of cardiovascular disease. However, whether habitual vaping influences BP variability remains unknown. PURPOSE: To test the hypothesis …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Previous literature has examined the benefits of consuming nitrate (NO3)-rich crops (e.g., beetroot, spinach, watercress, arugula) on endothelial function due to their positive influence on nitric oxide (NO) production from the utilization of nitrate-reducing bacteria in the oral microbiome. However, there has yet to be a study addressing how the method of consumption may influence the role the oral microbiome plays in the degradation of NO3 to NO from consuming an encapsulated NO3-rich crop. PURPOSE: To determine the differences in NO metabolite concentrations following two different methods (e.g., chewing, swallowing) of consuming the encapsulated arugula extract. METHODS: Eight, …

Relationship Between Intestinal Permeability And Microvascular Responses In A High-Risk Hispanic Population Of The Rio Grande Valley, Sophia M. Moreno, Alissa Olvera, Abigail Gomez, Ryan Russell, Melody Cantu, Andrea Toledo, Yu Lun Tai
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The Rio Grande Valley (RGV) has ~3x higher rates of diagnosed cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) than the US, which combine to be the leading cause of preventable death in the developed world. Microvascular blood flow (MBF) responses are an early indicator of vascular insulin resistance, and is blunted with obesity, T2D, and those at high risk for T2D. We have previously shown that apparently healthy people in the RGV display impaired MBF responses, helping explain the disparities noted with chronic disease. However mechanisms explaining this early vascular insulin resistance remain unexplored. Recent studies indicate that increased …

Exercise Pressor Response In Hispanic Adults With Family History Of Hypertension, Ashlesha D. Dalve, Justo Perez Iii, Ruby A. Nyarko, Jasdeep Kaur
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Family history of hypertension (FHH), being an unmodifiable risk factor, increases probability of developing hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases. The prevalence of hypertension in Hispanic/Latino (H/La) males is 50.3%, while it is 48.9% in non-Hispanic white (NHW) males and 57.5% in non-Hispanic black (NHB) males. Among adolescents aged 8 to 17, H/La youth has the highest incidence of hypertension as compared to all other races. It is evident that young normotensive adults with positive family history of hypertension (+FHH) exhibit exaggerated exercise pressor response. Additionally, a higher sympathetic activity to cold pressor test (CPT) was found in normotensive NHB adults …

Systemic Inflammation Persists In Rats With Heart Failure After A Short-Term Endurance Training Protocol, Quinten Pigg, Dillon Harris, Aaron Garcia, Daniela Sayuri Inoue, Mariana Janini Gomes
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Exercise has been shown to produce an anti-inflammatory response and an increased exercise tolerance in heart failure (HF) patients. In rats, monocrotaline (MCT) leads to pulmonary arterial hypertension-induced HF (PAH-HF), resulting in exercise intolerance and chronic inflammation. However, little is known about the effects of endurance training in rats with PAH-HF induced by monocrotaline. PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of an endurance training protocol on systemic inflammatory markers and exercise tolerance in rats with HF. METHODS: 30 male Wistar rats (~250g) were randomly divided into 4 groups: control untrained (CU); control trained (CT), PAH-HF untrained (HFU), and PAH-HF trained (HFT). …

Nasal breathing (NB) during aerobic exercise has gained attention due to its potential benefits to physical performance and health adaptations. However, it is unclear how an NB-induced increase in the partial pressure of CO2 (PetCO2) affects the enzymatic activity of glutathione peroxidase (GPX). PURPOSE: To determine the activity of GPX after 1-month of transient hypercapnic training induced by NB. METHODS: Fourteen males (age = 20.57 ± 1.22 yrs) were randomized to either the NB (n = 8) or combined breathing (CB, n = 6) group. Participants performed supervised aerobic training 4 times per week at ~70% …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Heart failure (HF) leads to debilitating skeletal muscle dysfunction and atrophy, with exercise tolerance (ET) remaining a crucial indicator of clinical, practical, and mortality-based outcomes. To simulate these comorbidities, monocrotaline (MCT) is a pharmacological agent typically used to aid in replicating experimental models of right ventricle HF. PURPOSE: To investigate the viability of moderate-intensity aerobic training to preserve skeletal muscle function and ameliorate muscle atrophy in MCT-induced HF. METHODS: Thirty 8-week-old male Wistar rats were randomly divided into sedentary (SED) or trained groups (EX; 30min/day treadmill running sessions, 5 days/wk, for 4 weeks) at 60% intensity determined by a maximal …

Examining The Effect Of Exogenous Ketone Supplement On Indices Of Peripheral Vascular Health/Function, John Kolade, Alison Ortiz, Prarthi Shah, Ken Perry, R. Matthew Brothers
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of death in the US and worldwide. The risk for and prevalence of CVD are elevated by various factors including impaired micro- and macrovascular function. Associated mechanisms are multifactorial but are related to elevated oxidative stress and/or inflammation which contribute to reduced nitric oxide bioavailability and ultimately vasodilatory reactivity. Ketogenic diets, commonly used as a strategy to lose weight and improve health, have been reported to improve mitochondria function, as well as antioxidant and inflammatory status. To the best of our knowledge, the effects on vascular function are less understood. PURPOSE: This …

Effects Of Continuous Aerobic Exercise On Skeletal Muscle Atrophy Induced By Heart Failure, Carolina Tonon, Bertha F. Polegato, Quinten Pigg, Dillon Harris, Aaron Garcia, Daniela S. Inoue, Mariana Janini Gomes
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Heart failure is a common and severe disease that worsens morbidity, mortality, and quality of life. One of the clinical manifestations of heart failure is peripheral muscular atrophy, whose presence impacts the prognosis of heart failure patients. Inflammation is one of the main mechanisms related to muscle atrophy. We hypothesized that inflammation, through excessive activation of the Nlrp3 inflammasome, would be tightly associated with skeletal muscle atrophy induced by heart failure. Additionally, aerobic exercise, well known for its anti-inflammatory action, would counteract this condition in a rat model of heart failure. PURPOSE: We aimed to evaluate the effects of continuous …

Investigating The Effect Of Hand Position On Hand Force And Rotation Time When Performing A Freestyle Flip-Turn, Emma C. Williams, Scott P. Mclean
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Havriluk (2004) found that an increase in hand force will increase a swimmer’s velocity. While the effect of hand force on a swimmer’s velocity has been studied, the forces produced by the hands as well as the effect of forearm position on hand force production during a freestyle flip-turn has not been investigated. PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of forearm orientation on freestyle flip-turn performance. METHODS: A convenience sample of ten experienced swimmers (6 Female, 4 Male, 20 ± 1.15 years) was recruited to participate. Prior to data collection, participants completed an accommodation session to familiarize them with …

Sublingual Sufentanil Attenuates Perceived Pain, But Not Blood Pressure Responses, During A Cold Pressor Test, Caitlin P. Jarrard, Zachary J. Mckenna, Whitley C. Atkins, Josh Foster, Joseph C. Watso, Craig G. Crandall
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Sublingual sufentanil was developed to reduce pain following a traumatic injury in the field (e.g., battlefield). However, it is unknown whether an analgesic dose of sufentanil affects cardiovascular responses to a painful stimulus in humans. PURPOSE: We tested the hypothesis that sublingual sufentanil blunts pain perception and the accompanying cardiovascular responses during a cold pressor test (CPT). METHODS: Twenty-nine adults, 15 males and 14 females (age: 29 ± 5 years, body mass: 74 ± 8 kg, body mass index: 25 ± 2 kg/m2) participated in this double-blind, randomized, crossover, placebo-controlled trial. Following sublingual administration of sufentanil (30 µg) …
Short-Term Cd8+ T Cell Depletion Results In Blunted Liver Inflammation In Old Mice, Konner J. Terrebonne, David J. Buckley, Blessy Joseph, Sunita Sharma, Daniel W. Trott
Short-Term Cd8+ T Cell Depletion Results In Blunted Liver Inflammation In Old Mice, Konner J. Terrebonne, David J. Buckley, Blessy Joseph, Sunita Sharma, Daniel W. Trott
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Advanced age is associated with an increase in basal inflammation of the organs. Previously we have found that T cells accumulate in the liver of old mice. A large proportion of these cells are CD8+ and produce inflammatory cytokines. We have previously demonstrated that CD8+ T cell depletion results in improved glucose tolerance in old mice. However, the mechanisms by which CD8+ depletion improves glucose tolerance is unclear. Therefore, we sought to determine whether pharmacologic CD8+ depletion would result in decreased liver specific inflammation in old mice compared to their old CD8+ intact counterparts. PURPOSE: To test the hypothesis …
The Effect Of Menstrual Phases On Salivary Markers Of Stress And Body Composition, Josey Walker, Nathan Sutton, Matthew J. Mcallister
The Effect Of Menstrual Phases On Salivary Markers Of Stress And Body Composition, Josey Walker, Nathan Sutton, Matthew J. Mcallister
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Women have been historically excluded in physiology research due to the assumption that the menstrual cycles influence physiological biomarkers. Research has shown that cortisol concentrations are higher during the follicular phase compared to the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. In addition, morning cortisol concentrations have been shown to be significantly higher in the morning compared to evening. However, salivary a-amylase (sAA) and secretory immunoglobin-A (SIg-A) have not been researched across the menstrual cycle. sAA is an indicator of sympathetic nervous system activation and is sensitive to acute stress. SIg-A is an antibody that is also an indicator of chronic …

Nutrition Able: A Lecture-Based Intervention To Promote Nutritional Literacy About Protein Intake In Women, Jeffery Bolte, Alejandra Garcia, Jacob Abalos, Jakson Johnson, Alex Joyce, Christopher Hinds, Jared Tuttle, Jeff Svec
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Sport performance is influenced by sport-specific requirements for body composition. One major predictor of body composition is protein intake. Higher protein intake tends to cause leaner body composition relative to lower protein intake, especially during caloric deficit. In Bexar County, ~72% of the adult population is overweight/obese and 15.5% are diabetic. This suggests that high protein diet could be a high leverage option in the San Antonio population for optimizing body composition for sport performance. Furthermore, late life sporting activity and protein intake is a primary method for mitigating sarcopenia, osteoporosis, fractures, and accidental death in post-menopausal women. PURPOSE: …
