A Comparison Of Ffr Measures Of Young Adults With Biomark Normative Values, Kathryn Eileen Pitts May 2009

A Comparison Of Ffr Measures Of Young Adults With Biomark Normative Values, Kathryn Eileen Pitts

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The BioMARK (Biological Marker of Auditory Processing) test, formerly known as BioMAP, is a measure of the frequency following response (FFR) in children to a speech stimulus. The test was designed for 8 to 12 year old children. Other tests of the auditory brainstem such as auditory brainstem responses, have normative values that are valid for listeners from age 2 to adulthood. The goal of the present study was to evaluate the speech-evoked FFR of young adult listeners to determine if a separate set of normative values is needed for this age group. FFR tests using the BioMARK with thirteen …

Why Are There Fewer Women In Engineering?, Sue Ellen Haupt Jan 2005

Why Are There Fewer Women In Engineering?, Sue Ellen Haupt

ADVANCE Library Collection

This paper attempts to explain the paucity of women in engineering. While the percentage of women entering engineering and science careers has been increasing, the number at higher ranks has not increased as quickly, after considering the appropriate time lag. The differences in tenure rate due to gender alone were statistically insignificant. Instead, these were attributed to the fact that women who are married or have children are less successful than are men with matching characteristics. One solution proposed is to recognize that priorities might be different at differing stages of family life. It is also important to encourage more …

Pipeline To Pathways: New Directions For Improving The Status Of Women On Campus, Judith S. White Jan 2005

Pipeline To Pathways: New Directions For Improving The Status Of Women On Campus, Judith S. White

ADVANCE Library Collection

For the past thirty years, much of the effort to improve the status of women in higher education has focused on the so-called "pipeline" theory, which held that a large number of women undergraduates and graduate students would, over time, yield larger numbers of women at the highest academic ranks. In other words, getting more women into college, encouraging them to pursue graduate and professional education, and recruiting them into the academy was supposed to create a growing "pool" from which search committees would select ever larger numbers of women assistant professors. These women, in turn, would earn tenured positions …

In 2001, a roundtable on gender disparities for female professors in higher education was held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The focus of the roundtable was "how best to ensure women professors experience the same opportunities, recognition and rewards as their male counterparts." Some three years later, a few faculty members from various disciplines weigh in with various perspectives on the current state of the gender gap.

The Joys Of Leading An Academic Department, Mos Kaveh Jan 2004

The Joys Of Leading An Academic Department, Mos Kaveh

ADVANCE Library Collection

t is often said that being a professor is the best job and being a department head or chair is the toughest job in an academic institution. This observation stems from the fact that, particularly in U.S. research universities, faculty members have considerable freedom, outside of assigned teaching and service duties, to manage their own time and scholarly effort and directions. Meanwhile, department chairs operate in a buffer zone between deans and upper administration, faculty colleagues, students, and increasingly institutional and government regulators and alumni. This necessitates wearing many hats, as administrator, teacher, researcher, lawyer, entrepreneur, and juggling a multitude …

The blatant barriers are down. Women are now routinely chief scientists on major cruises, lead field parties to all continents, and have risen to leadership positions in professional organizations, academic departments, and funding agencies. Nonetheless, barriers remain. Women continue to be under-represented in the Earth, ocean, and atmospheric sciences.
