An Analysis Of The Relationship Between K-12 Public Education Spending And Student Academic Achievement In Iowa, Lydia Berns-Schweingruber
An Analysis Of The Relationship Between K-12 Public Education Spending And Student Academic Achievement In Iowa, Lydia Berns-Schweingruber
INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference
Student academic achievement in Iowa is on the decline (US Department of Education 2022). Some politicians propose increasing public education spending in order to address worrisome trends in academic achievement (Richardson 2022). Prior studies disagree about whether there is a relationship between school spending and student outcomes. The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a relationship between K-12 public education spending and student academic achievement in Iowa. This project analyzes data from the past nineteen years to examine the relationship between Iowa’s per- pupil expenditure and student outcomes — specifically, graduation rate, average daily attendance, math …

Understanding The Lived Experiences Of Asian American Transracial Adoptees In College, Frances Elizabeth Mcdermott
Understanding The Lived Experiences Of Asian American Transracial Adoptees In College, Frances Elizabeth Mcdermott
Honors Program Theses
Asian American transracial adoptees are an underserved and underrepresented population in America, specifically on college campuses. The purpose of this study was to gain an in-depth understanding of experiences lived by individuals in this group, focusing on their time in college. Through qualitative interviews, this research captured the feelings, opinions, and experiences of select individuals within this group. Two semi-structured interviews were conducted with six separate participants via video chat. All participants attend(ed) the University of Northern Iowa, were 18 years of age or older, and were adopted from an Asian country into a White, American family. Results showed that …
Civic Learning Outcomes: Measuring Students' Experiences In Higher Education, Stanley Ebede
Civic Learning Outcomes: Measuring Students' Experiences In Higher Education, Stanley Ebede
Annual Graduate Student Symposium
Many colleges and universities have re-embraced the public purpose of higher education. As such, identifying and measuring civic learning outcomes for students as well as evaluating the efficacy of civic engagement programs and teaching strategies are important (Steinberg, Hatcher & Bringle, 2011). The primary purpose of this study is to assess the civic-mindedness in students by comparing students that participate in Nonprofit Leadership Alliance (NLA) student association to non –NLA students at a comprehensive Midwestern university. The development of civic-mindedness in students was assessed using a survey designed around the Civic Minded Graduate (CMG) Scale. The CMG scale accentuates the …

Student Engagement In Higher Education: Measuring The Differences In Community Engagement, Stanley S. Ebede
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
In U.S. education system, the growing gap in the engagement of various groups and types of students is wider than ever (Darling-Hammond, 2015). Therefore, there is a need to bridge the gap in engagement by ensuring that either personal or social circumstances such as gender, student status, ethnic groups etc. are not obstacles to achieving educational potential in higher education (Williams & Whiting, 2016; Greene, Marti, & McClenney, 2008; McClenney & Marti, 2006). Using both longitudinal and cross-sectional perspectives advocated by Fuller, Wilson and Tobin (2011); Gordon, Ludlum, and Hoey (2008); and Astin and Lee (2003), this study examined students’ …

Infant And Toddler Care, Maggie Trecker
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this review of recent research is to identify the quality of care that infants and toddlers are receiving in both home-based and center-based care settings. The conclusion of this literature review includes recommendations for future action and education policies based on the research reviewed.
Friends In High Places: Drinkers’ Perceptions Of Gender, Sobriety, And Relationships With Nondrinkers, Seth Behrends
Friends In High Places: Drinkers’ Perceptions Of Gender, Sobriety, And Relationships With Nondrinkers, Seth Behrends
Research in the Capitol
This study examines the sociological questions of how sobriety impacts friendships or relationships between college student drinkers and nondrinkers, and how drinking and sobriety influence perceptions of gender and sexuality in the eyes of college student drinkers. Researchers in the past have tended to focus on the population of students in college who drink, and significantly fewer studies have discussed issues involving students who do not consume alcohol. Ten college student drinkers, consisting of five men and five women, were interviewed in this study. Participants tended to have very few to no nondrinking friendships, primarily associating this separation with conflicting …
Perceived Effects Of Family Status Changes On Male Collegiate Outdoor Recreation Coordinators, Andrew K. Martin
Perceived Effects Of Family Status Changes On Male Collegiate Outdoor Recreation Coordinators, Andrew K. Martin
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
A career as a collegiate outdoor recreation professional is both a challenging and rewarding occupation. It is a position that consists of inconsistent hours as well as extended periods away from home. This qualitative study identified how changes in family status affect an individual’s perception of the position as a collegiate outdoor recreation coordinator. More specifically, the perceived benefits or challenges that occur throughout the family status changes, and what effect, if any, these perceptions had on the individual’s work performance, job satisfaction and career longevity.
Using a phenomenological approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight individuals who were employed …
The Impact Of Student Organizations On The Development Of Core Competencies, Stanley Somtochukwu Ebede
The Impact Of Student Organizations On The Development Of Core Competencies, Stanley Somtochukwu Ebede
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Higher education has a significant impact on the development of critical skills that improve students’ academic outcomes. However, academic institutions have not adequately focused more on the role of student organizations in supporting and improving student outcomes. The primary purpose of this study is to investigate students’ perception of the development of core competencies during their experiences at a comprehensive Midwestern university, specifically examining the differences of those involved in student organizations to those not involved.
The impact of student organizations on the development of core competencies was assessed using a survey that was designed around the core competencies outlined …

Examining Variations In Technology Use For K-12 Students Of Different Gender And Socioeconomic Status, Nikki Lyons
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this paper is to review the literature currently published on how members of different genders and socioeconomic classes use technology to suit their needs in and out of the classroom learning environment. It will focus on the use of digital technologies by students in elementary, middle, and high schools. This was done by examining 30 research-based, peer-reviewed journal articles, books, published papers, documents, and observational analyses. The research indicates there are clear differences in how members of different subpopulations such as gender and socioeconomic groups choose to use technology to suit their communication, collaboration, instructional, and entertainment …
