Protecting Youth From Mexican Drug Cartel Recruitment: The Prospects Of Educational Interventions, Lisa Hochstetler

Lux et Fides: A Journal for Undergraduate Christian Scholars

This investigation considers the impact of Mexico’s War on Drugs since 2006 and the influence of widespread cartel networks on the youth population. As both victims and perpetrators of drug-related crime, the young individuals of Mexico are the center of this research. The goal of this investigation was to determine how education in Mexico’s grade schools could be leveraged to protect its youth from drug-related violence and cartel recruitment. Therefore, the study examines both the challenges suffered by the education system due to the Drug War and the prospects for educational interventions to strengthen and protect youth over and against …

Looking From Yesterday: Taylor University At 175, Ashley Chu, Tesia Jurasheck, Elizabeth Hammond, Alyssa Lykins

Faculty-Mentored Undergraduate Scholarship

“Looking from Yesterday” is the title of Dr. Milo A. Rediger’s 1970 address about the importance of Christian higher education during times of uncertainty and volatility. In this address, Rediger references the “Taylor concept,” which included symbols of oil (light) and the cross as a hopeful sign to the world. Despite its delivery more than 50 years ago, the theme of Rediger’s address still rings true today as we continue to seek to fulfill the mission of Taylor University during our own challenging times. This year (2021-22), Taylor University will recognize its founding 175 years ago. This research project will …

Reactive Attachment Disorder In Children, Lindy Ruth Rader Feb 2020

Reactive Attachment Disorder In Children, Lindy Ruth Rader

CARE Conference: Vulnerable Children and Viable Communities

Reactive Attachment Disorder as a whole is a disorder that shows itself in young children. It then has the possibility of affecting the rest of the child’s life and the people that surround the child. There are two types of Reactive Attachment Disorder. The first type is the emotionally withdrawn/inhibited type. This can manifest itself in a few different ways, but the main way is through the child lashing out in fear or anger. This is due to the lack of healthy attachments in their lives. The second subtype is the disinhibited type. This also can manifest itself in multiple …

Cultural Factors That Influence Domestic Adoption In South Africa, Greta N. Buckenberger Feb 2020

Cultural Factors That Influence Domestic Adoption In South Africa, Greta N. Buckenberger

CARE Conference: Vulnerable Children and Viable Communities

South Africa has a long and rich cultural history and this history has impacted domestic adoption in a myriad of ways. These cultural factors include ancestral beliefs, infertility, family structure, and apartheid, and they all affect adoption policies and how the public perceives adoption. Unfortunately, these factors usually result in negative results for children in kinship care or children waiting to be adopted. Kinship care is the informal, non-governmentally regulated practice of relatives caring for children. South Africa’s cultural factors of ancestral beliefs, infertility, family structure, apartheid, and the AIDS crisis all impact domestic adoption.

Deaf Children In A Hearing World, Kara Head Feb 2020

Deaf Children In A Hearing World, Kara Head

CARE Conference: Vulnerable Children and Viable Communities

When diving into the world of vulnerable children, these individuals can be found among a variety of marginalized and forgotten people groups. These groups vary based on country, socioeconomic status, race, and ethnicity as well as other factors. One group however, that can be found among every single classification of vulnerable children is the deaf child. Because the Deaf Community is not indigenous to a specific country or region, they can be found anywhere. It is unfortunate however, that although there is easy access to this community, it is perhaps one of the most overlooked people in the world. Gaining …

The Impact Of Childhood Abuse On Moral Development, Shayla Stogsdill Apr 2019

The Impact Of Childhood Abuse On Moral Development, Shayla Stogsdill

Orphans and Vulnerable Children Student Projects

Moral development is a topic which has little research to accompany it. Although there is a lack of understanding of where and how children develop morals, there is clear evidence to support that abuse in any form against a child will impact the way they learn morality. Children who experience abuse will face the physical, emotional, and mental impacts which will all contribute to the way they develop. Children also learn behaviors and ideas from caretakers and when those who are supposed to protect them do not, children will become disordered on the ideas of right and wrong. Childhood is …

Don't Shoot: Race-Based Trauma And Police Brutality, Leah Metzger Apr 2019

Don't Shoot: Race-Based Trauma And Police Brutality, Leah Metzger

Orphans and Vulnerable Children Student Projects

With the growing conversation on police brutality against black Americans, there is an increasing need to understand the consequences this has on black children. Research is now showing that children and adults can experience race-based trauma, which can have profound effects on psychological and physical well-being, and can also impact communities as a whole. The threat and experience of police brutality and discrimination can be experienced individually or vicariously, and traumatic symptoms can vary depending on the individual. Children are especially vulnerable to the psychological and physical effects of police brutality and the threat thereof because of their developmental stages. …
