Women At Rutgers College: Remembering 1970-1977, Nancy Topping Bazin
Women At Rutgers College: Remembering 1970-1977, Nancy Topping Bazin
Women's & Gender Studies Faculty Publications
My story is about developing women’s studies from 1970 to 1977 at Rutgers College, which was then one of the five separate colleges that made up Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Rutgers College was all-male, but it did not stay that way long. Because it was part of a state university, the Board of Governors decided that the college had to go co-ed the following year to avoid being sued for discrimination. In order not to displace male students, the integration would proceed very slowly by adding a few females to each freshman class. After four years of …
The Government's Efforts To Improve Reading Of Young Children, Lea Lee, Abha Gupta
The Government's Efforts To Improve Reading Of Young Children, Lea Lee, Abha Gupta
Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications
Reviews four major federal initiatives to improve early reading and literacy programs in the U.S.: Title One Reading program, the Reading Excellence Act, Even Start Family Literacy Program, and the Leave No Child Behind Act. Concludes that these expensive reading programs have not been very successful.
Once Upon A Time: Teaching About The World's Women Through Literature, Cynthia A. Tyson, Kaavonia Hinton-Johnson
Once Upon A Time: Teaching About The World's Women Through Literature, Cynthia A. Tyson, Kaavonia Hinton-Johnson
Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications
Literature about women such as African American voting rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer or political activist Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar provides prime materials for teaching about women's success in fighting social ills.
Integrating Cultural Pluralism Through Reading, Guang- Lea Lee
Integrating Cultural Pluralism Through Reading, Guang- Lea Lee
Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications
The paper provides practical suggestions for teachers to integrate cultural pluralism in three reading strategies (1) reading workshops, (2) writing workshops, and (3) language experience approaches which make a valuable contribution to students of all cultural backgrounds.
Early Intervention With Children At Risk Of Emotional/Behavioral Disorders: A Critical Examination Of Research Methodology And Practices, Peggy P. Hester, Heather M. Baltodano, Robert A. Gable, Stephen W. Tonelson, Jo M. Hendrickson
Early Intervention With Children At Risk Of Emotional/Behavioral Disorders: A Critical Examination Of Research Methodology And Practices, Peggy P. Hester, Heather M. Baltodano, Robert A. Gable, Stephen W. Tonelson, Jo M. Hendrickson
Communication Disorders & Special Education Faculty Publications
Children's behavior problems pose challenges to families, schools, and society. The research literature argues that early detection/intervention is the most powerful course of action in ameliorating these problems in children at risk of emotional/behavioral disorders. However, specifying precisely what constitutes a quality program of early intervention is not a simple task. Current conceptualizations suggest that successful early intervention cannot be unidimensional in nature, but must consist of a complex series of interactions and transactions that synergistically serve to nurture and enhance both the development of the child and family. In this paper, we reviewed the accumulated research to learn more …
Performing Interactively A Thermo-Fluids Laboratory Experiment In The Virtual Domain, Sushil K. Chaturvedi, Ali O. Akan, Tarek M. Abdel-Salam, A. Priyadershini
Performing Interactively A Thermo-Fluids Laboratory Experiment In The Virtual Domain, Sushil K. Chaturvedi, Ali O. Akan, Tarek M. Abdel-Salam, A. Priyadershini
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper deals with the development of an experiment in the virtual domain for the undergraduate thermo-fluids laboratory in the mechanical engineering program. A physical experiment titled "Venturimeter as a Flow Measuring Device" is replicated as a computer-based experiment as part of the ongoing effort at Old Dominion University to develop web-based laboratories that would provide students hands-on experience in the virtual domain. A web-based module is developed that allows experimentation and data taking in a virtual setting much like in the physical experiment. This module incorporating the virtual venturimeter has been used by students to take data for several …
Active Learning In Distance Education, Carol Considine, Tony Dean
Active Learning In Distance Education, Carol Considine, Tony Dean
Engineering Technology Faculty Publications
Although there are many strategies for incorporating active learning exercises into the traditional classroom, incorporating active learning exercises in a distance education delivery format is more challenging. Active learning has been shown to enhance student performance and attitudes when used in conjunction with a traditional lecture format.1 In order for students to be actively involved they must read, write, discuss, problem solve and engage higher-order thinking tasks such as analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.2 The implementation of active learning exercises in distance education classes may help establish student rapport and enhance the feeling of community among the students in …
A Matlab-Based Upper Division Systems Analysis Course For Engineering Technology, William D. Stanley, Paul L. Kauffmann, Gary R. Crossman
A Matlab-Based Upper Division Systems Analysis Course For Engineering Technology, William D. Stanley, Paul L. Kauffmann, Gary R. Crossman
Engineering Technology Faculty Publications
The Department of Engineering Technology at Old Dominion University offers TAC of ABET accredited baccalaureate programs in Civil Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, and Mechanical Engineering Technology. All students are required to take traditional courses in algebra and trigonometry, as well as differential and integral calculus, at the freshman and sophomore levels. While these courses provided the necessary basic mathematical skills, it was difficult to justify the traditional upper-division mathematics courses such as differential equations, vector analysis, etc., as appropriate for the special needs of engineering technology students.
To address this issue, the Department has undertaken the development of a …
The Effect Of The Clery Act On Campus Judicial Practices, Dennis E. Gregory, Steven M. Janosik
The Effect Of The Clery Act On Campus Judicial Practices, Dennis E. Gregory, Steven M. Janosik
Educational Foundations & Leadership Faculty Publications
This article describes a study seeking to assess perceptions of campus judicial officers/members of the Association for Student Judicial Affairs (ASJA) regarding the effectiveness of the Clery Act (Campus Security Act) on campus judicial practices. In addition it provides information regarding overall effectiveness of Clery as perceived by the respondents. The researchers surveyed 1,143 members of the Association for Student Judicial Affairs (ASJA) whose institutions are covered by the Act. A total of 422 ASJA members returned questionnaires. This provided a response rate of 36.9%. The respondents included 39% Senior Student Affairs Officers who supervise a judicial conduct administrator, 44% …
Inquiry In Technology Education, Philip A. Reed, Kurt R. Helgeson (Ed.), Anthony E. Schwaller (Ed.)
Inquiry In Technology Education, Philip A. Reed, Kurt R. Helgeson (Ed.), Anthony E. Schwaller (Ed.)
STEMPS Faculty Publications
Technology education involves much more than instruction of the artifacts and methods of technology. The increasing amount and complexity of technology require students to know how to use, manage, assess, and understand technology. Inquiry is a cognitive instructional strategy that can help students learn about current technologies and also provide them with tools for investigating emerging technologies as they are encountered.
