This paper draws upon intertextuality to explore how an African American male adult learner uses his religious faith as a resource for persisting in an adult literacy program. The findings indicate that religious faith was not simply a coping mechanism but a resource for redefining learner identity.

Walking Against The Grain: A Case Study Of Catholic Women‟S Social Justice Discourse, Practice And Spirituality In Post-Katrina New Orleans, Sherri K. Lawless

This qualitative study explored the relationship between Catholic women adult educators‘ understanding of social justice and their engagement in anti-poverty activist practice with Hurricane Katrina survivors, in the context of a religiously-affiliated organization. While the privilege discourse was predominantly used by the eight activists interviewed, analysis also revealed that they understood social justice in multiple and layered ways. Specifically, these adult educator activists‘ enacted practice has a complexity that does not conform neatly to traditional conceptualizations of social justice. This article presents the voices of six full-team faculty members in the faculties of education and social work within the Canadian university context who are interested in teaching courses that address an aspect of spirituality as part of the core content. The Role Of Spirituality In The Lives Of Black Same Gender Loving Men At Midlife, Larry Bryant, Lorenzo Bowman

This paper addresses the role of spirituality in the lives of Black Same Gender Loving (SGL) men. Findings from the analysis of three autoethnographies indicate Black SGL men experience same sex attraction at an early age, reevaluate the religious and spiritual teachings of their youth, attend church at an early age, consider spirituality an integral part of their daily lives, and utilize spirituality in reaching reach out to others.

This paper explores the relationship between creative expression and spirituality, examining ways in which adults seek knowledge and/or make meaning through these connections. The Role Of Spirituality In The Practice Of Adult Education Leaders, Jeanette Justice Fleming, Bradley C. Courtenay

Leaders defined spirituality as different from, but related to religion, part of their identity, and as a connection to a Higher Being, to others, and to nature. Spirituality provided a calling to profession, instilled an ethical framework and served as a resource in times of challenge. It influenced use of power, decision making, and communication with coworkers. Participants exhibited a variety of leadership styles reflecting individual perceptions of spirituality.
