Modeling And Encouraging Self-Care In Online Teacher Preparation: Lessons Learned During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Kathleen A. Boothe, Marla J. Lohmann

The COVID-19 pandemic had significant impacts for both teachers and students at all levels. Instructional delivery had to be modified to respond to the need for social distancing. Even courses that were already fully online required adaptations to accommodate the needs of university students during COVID. One of the biggest changes that the authors made to their teaching and to their students’ learning was that of modeling and encouraging self-care. This article summarizes what two university faculty changed in their instruction to help promote self-care, as well as what they are doing now to continue utilizing what they learned.

The advent of online learning in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic radically altered the landscape of modern education. While most research has examined the socio-emotional and academic impact of the shift to online school, far less attention has been given to its effect on extra-curricular activities. Well-developed communications skills are essential to a proficient agricultural workforce. Online instruction via reusable learning modules (RLMs) is one way agricultural science faculty can provide their students with expert communications skills training. Although RLMs have many benefits, their value degrades rapidly if the learner cannot access or use the technology efficiently. Therefore, online instruction must be tested to ensure usability. This manuscript details efforts to redesign a graduate literacy program guided by two, full-time faculty members to better meet candidates’ needs in an online learning environment supported with relevant and current curricula. This paper presents a portion of the findings from a larger study of factors related to academic risk-taking behaviors among a group of preservice teachers in the online component of a blended-format course. We describe our study findings and implications specific for the variable of risk propensity and its relationship with academic risk-taking behavior. A synthesis of our findings with the works of other researchers provides the groundwork for exploring factors that instructors can consider in designing learning environments that support academic risk-taking, particularly in online environments. This study aims to understand adult online informal learning illuminating a way of becoming an influential social figure. We interviewed five famous online economy disputants whose postings were very popular in Korea during the global financial crisis in 2008-2009. We explored how they learned and found that their self-directedness interplayed with the context of other- directedness, a sense of being stimulated and indebted enhanced their learning process, and dynamics of anonymity and social recognition were keys to their emergence.
