From 2014-2016, the National Networks of Libraries of Medicine, MidContinental Region ran the Mobile App Experience Project. This project provided funds for health science librarians to purchase apps via iTunes or Google Play. In exchange, participants were asked to thoroughly evaluate each app and share their experience in using them with the library community. Evaluators were equipped with an App Evaluation Report Form (AERF) to help develop a systematic and critical evaluation of mobile apps. The AERF guided the users to report on an app's: authority of information sources; accuracy and objectivity; currency of information; organization and usability; and purpose. …

The University of Kansas has implemented a new performance management system for paraprofessional staff to satisfy, in part, the “Developing Excellence in People” goal of the University’s strategic plan. The new performance management system allows supervisors and staff to establish and comment on performance goals throughout the year and, at the end of the year, provide a rating for each goal. In addition, the system requires staff and supervisors to rate and comment on nine core competencies upon which the University’s leadership determined staff should be evaluated. Leonard H. Axe Library at Pittsburg State University (PSU) is undergoing a 5-year building renovation focused on creating new services and spaces, including technology rich spaces, media recording rooms, group study spaces, and more. As part of the renovation project, Library Services was tasked with reducing the circulating collection footprint by approximately fifty percent. One part of the challenge was to face the traditional campus and librarian perceptions of reducing the collection. If mishandled, perceptions of the process can turn into negative emotions or public outcry that can delay or shut down a project. Librarians at Axe Library set out …

For many years, the KU and KSU Libraries have looked for a method of combining their resources to create a collaborative collection development project. When KSU joined YBP as their main book vendor, it became evident that such a project might get off the ground since KU Libraries were longtime customers of YBP. Since Proquest was the main vendor for e-books for both schools and YBP sold e-books from Proquest, KU and KSU decided to approach their e-book specialist with Proquest to find out if a collaborative demand-driven (DDA) e-book project was possible. Print serials collection development has long been a traditional role of academic librarians. However, in the last 20 years, academic libraries’ print serials ownership has declined and online access has begun to take its place, both partially due to concerns with flat or declining budgets as well as lack of space and the need to repurpose this limited space. Pittsburg State University’s Axe Library faces the challenge of balancing its print and electronic serials collections at a university whose programs sometimes do not draw enough on library resources. Happy birthday! In 2017, Farrell Library turns 90 and Hale Library turns 20— along with about 3,000 K-State sophomores. Over the decades, when students, faculty and researchers have a need, the K-State Libraries respond. We adapt and improve our spaces and services, just as we have for more than a century. So in honor of nine decades of Farrell Library and two decades of Hale Library, we present a look at the evolution of K-State Libraries’ flagship building, past and present.

Textbook Affordability Project: Chipping Away At The Cost Of A University Education, Kansas State University Libraries

Seven out of ten students say that they have not purchased a required text because of its price tag. In fact, The College Board, an organization that works to expand access to higher education, estimates a full-time undergraduate student at a public four-year university will pay $1,298 per year for books and supplies. So in order to fill students’ backpacks without emptying their wallets, K-State Libraries launched the Textbook Affordability Project.

K-State Keepsakes: The 150th Anniversary Of Ksac’S First Graduating Class

On June 26, 1867, Kansas State Agricultural College held commencement ceremonies for its first five graduates: Henry L. Denison, Belle M. Haines, L. Emma Haines, John J. Points, and Martha A. White. This year is the sesquicentennial of that inaugural graduating class. Their journey began when K-State’s doors first opened in September 1863 to 52 students, equally divided between men and women.

Driven By Teamwork Prof. Greg Spaulding’S Students Take On A Prodigious Group Project, Kansas State University Libraries

For six years, Greg Spaulding, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, has assigned a unique challenge to teams of Intro to Mechanical Engineering students: They must design and build a working vehicle that one person can drive and ride. In addition, it must be powered solely by a cordless drill. A lot has to happen between the day the students receive their assignment and the end of the semester when they present their final project in an Olympic-style competition. K-State Libraries’ services, materials and faculty help students in their academic pursuits year-round. The Libraries are also proud to recognize outstanding original research once it’s completed. In 2013, the Libraries established the Kirmser Undergraduate Research Award. Sometimes winning research projects come from unexpected sources. Like a hay bale. David Leiszler (Clifton), Peter Masters (Troy) and Austin Schmitz (Axtell) created an attachment for a skid-steer loader that could lift a bale and safely remove the net wrap while the farmer remains in the vehicle.

Last summer, Madison May, senior in political science and international studies, worked with Ghana’s National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) to empower young girls and women of all ages. May’s internship was made possible through the Marjorie J. and Richard L.D. Morse Family and Community Public Policy Scholarship administered by K-State Libraries.

Mike Haddock, associate dean for research, education and engagement for K-State Libraries, has two offices: One is on the fifth floor of Hale Library. The other is on the prairie. Haddock combs the state to identify and photograph the state’s native wildflowers and grasses. Now, the Kansas Center for the Book has selected his most recent publication, “Kansas Wildflowers and Weeds,” as a 2016 Kansas Notable Book.

In 2017, communities throughout the United States will commemorate the centennial of U.S. involvement in World War I. At K-State, we have traditionally said that 48 Wildcats died in the Great War. One way they have been remembered is with the “Lest We Forget” memorial that resides in Gen. Richard B. Myers Hall. However, a handful of individuals were not included in that list. One member of that overlooked group was the first World War I casualty with a connection to K-State: Private Otto Maurer. He was a German infantryman who died in Belgium in November 1914.
