Adult education in post-independence developing countries resides within the context of national and local conditions which are connected to the legacy of colonialism. When White adult educators engage with the work of authors of color they often mean to treat these respectfully and to ensure these ideas are not marginalized by other Whites. However, in a racist and sexist society the racial group membership and socio-political location of White authors means they can easily end up promoting malefic generosity, repressive tolerance and post-colonial condescension.

This paper summarizes the findings of a qualitative study which sought to determine Black and White attorneys’ perspectives on race, the legal system, and their level of support for the inclusion of race-related topics in continuing legal education (CLE). The White attorneys were supportive of the status quo. The Black attorneys agreed that CLE should address the issue of race and that the status quo was not acceptable.

This paper develops a theory that interprets the philosophical schools of American Pragmatism and Continental Postmodernism as important, complementary resources for understanding the effects of structure and agency on the possibilities for learning and meaning-making. This type of theory building can provide for practitioners and scholars a useful framework for negotiating the limited battle between self-determination and structural determination.

This study explored the experience of having a working class background and an earned doctorate as part of a research course using phenomenological methods. Findings revealed a “working class way of looking at the world” that colors the meaning of the experience of graduate school and one’s professional life.

This paper offers a critical perspective on popular education with a focus on inequities of gender and culture in the classroom. Using classroom observation, analysis of multiple social change curricula, and interviews with practitioners in El Salvador and the San Francisco Bay Area, we examine potential pitfalls and strengths of a pedagogy from the point of view of transformational theory, concluding that with judicious intention the pedagogy may still lead to inspired learning, transformation in the classroom, and change in the participant communities.

This qualitative study examines the content from interviews with 10 formerly abusive men who self-identify as having changed their perspectives about abuse toward their partners. The study was conducted to uncover the causes for their change, and to show how this change is explained and supported by transformative learning theories.

The purpose of this study was to describe characteristics of adult basic education programs for welfare recipients that reported higher than average GED rates and to identify implications for practice and program improvement. Three program characteristics were found to influence GED rates: program practices, a motivational culture, and instructional approaches.

Identity development work shows that identities are socially constructed by the interplay between and within categorical boundaries of race, gender, and class. Research further shows that identity development and the social context are interconnected and produce theories of knowing. Relying on the theory of intersectionality for deconstructing the identity of Black Deaf and hard-of-hearing adult men, this discussion examines the interplay between race, gender, and deafness. Implications for adult education and practice are included.

Well-educated Korean women are returning to higher education in unprecedented numbers with the motivation of recovering their personal identity. The purpose of this qualitative study is to understand in what ways this experience is meaningful to these reentry women. In-depth interviews were conducted with 13 Korean full-time housewives aged 25 to 45 who already had a Bachelor’s degree yet enrolled as students at a four-year university, a graduate school, or a university-affiliated lifelong education center. Women And Learning In An Online Environment, Kyungmi Hyun

The purpose of this study was to examine women’s learning in an online environment. The study was an ethnographic investigation combined with discourse analysis of the textual interactions of women in a graduate introductory research class offered online. The findings reveal that women’s learning had unique patterns based on their perceptions of the online setting and on their sense of time, which was established by their other prioritized roles and responsibilities outside the class.
