This project examined the need for increased service learning in schools as well as current practices being used by educators who employ service learning as a regular part of curriculum. The review of literature found that service learning, when conducted properly, has shown benefits to students, educators, and communities. In addition, there were five main components of an effective service learning program: preparation, action, reflection, presentation, and recognition. The project examined key elements of success in large high school conversions to smaller learning community complexes. The review of current research found that the mere act of making schools smaller by size of staff and student population is not enough of a structural change to affect student learning and achievement. Six defining characteristics of a small school were identified as key elements to a learning community that can demonstrate success by significantly improved graduation rates, testing scores and college applications and acceptances. The purpose of this project was to develop a guide that aligned the Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs) with the Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) program for teachers in Washington State. Using Children's Literature And Parental Involvement To Facilitate Reading With Primary-Age Children Through A Literacy Backpack Program, Tami Marie Scrivner

The purpose of this project was to create a home literacy backpack program to increase children's reading skills with parental help through the use ofliterature that is relevant and meaningful to the students. Research that was reviewed showed students learn how to read through a balanced form of instruction using children's literature. Reviewed research also indicated parental involvement to be positively related to children's success in school. Materials necessary to put together 35 take home backpacks are included in this project. Conclusions, recommendations and suggestions for implementation of the backpack program are also discussed.

This project was based on a review of literature in the areas of vocabulary development, curriculum integration, and using children's literature in the content areas. The purpose of this project was to provide third and fourth grade teachers with a handbook designed to increase the use of nonfiction, informational children's literature in the content area of science. The solar system-themed handbook consists of 10 comprehensive lessons containing vocabulary building activities, stories to be read aloud by the teacher, and hands-on science experiments. Integrating Mathematics, Technical Writing Skills And Authentic Assessment Into A Ninth And Tenth Grade Woodshop Curriculum, John Lawrence Mccarley

For this project an integrated woodshop curriculum containing elements of procedural writing and mathematics instruction was created. The curriculum design was based on the constructivist concept that students learn more efficiently when personal meaning is attached to the content presented. That concept was used to connect mathematics and writing to realistic applications in a woodshop setting. Support for integration of various content areas into a single curriculum is supported in the academic literature. Specific exercises to attain specific outcomes are discussed in the literature, and adaptations of those processes were incorporated in the project.

The purpose of this project was to design an assessment portfolio process for first grade students. Through the portfolio process children will set goals, self-evaluate, self-reflect, review their peers, and hold a student-led conference. Current research and best practices on portfolios, goal-setting, self-evaluation, self-reflection, peer review, and student-led conferences were reviewed. Literacy portfolios were defined. Portfolios and how they were introduced into education were discussed. Purposes and benefits as well as concerns and challenges of using portfolios in the classroom were discussed and compared. Mini-lessons and black-line masters were also included for each content area.

A personalized reading program has been developed for a Title I remedial reading program in grades one through six. Providing an Instructional reading program that best meets the needs of each student was a major goal. The four instructional categories included were decoding skills, comprehension, vocabulary development, and dictionary and study skills. A system has been developed for recording performance in these areas, plus conferences and books read. The aim was to help each child reach his maximum learning potential.
