Acorporation, Inc.: Corporate Form As Art Project And Advocacy, Chad Erpelding, Ruth Jebe, Jeff Lingwall

Art, Design & Visual Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Development of the corporation was a key turning point in the institutional history of business. The concepts of life beyond the existence of its founders, limited liability, and the ability to accumulate massive amounts of capital through stock ownership changed the nature of commercial practice in the United States and around the world. This has not been without controversy, particularly as large corporations began to capture much of modern economic life. Great economic power has not always meant great responsibility, and concepts of corporate citizenship and legal “personhood” remain subjects of debate. Similarly, how corporations do, or ought to, navigate …

"Our Best Machines Are Made Of Sunlight": Photography And Technologies Of Light, Niharika Dinkar Jan 2021

"Our Best Machines Are Made Of Sunlight": Photography And Technologies Of Light, Niharika Dinkar

Art, Design & Visual Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

With the demise of analog photography, the workings of light, which seemed an obvious and transparent modality in an earlier era, have acquired a new salience. Instead of a transparent medium that seamlessly links seeing and knowing, light is shown as having agency and a textured materiality, both of which inflect bodies and spaces. This resurgence is indicated in the recent spate of scholarship on the social and material cultures of light, the infrastructures enabled by light, colonial practices of light (which is my own point of entry into the subject), anthropologies of luminosity, and geographies of darkness.

Mythologies Of The Artist In Modern India: Cinema, Melodrama And Ravi Varma, Niharika Dinkar Jan 2018

Mythologies Of The Artist In Modern India: Cinema, Melodrama And Ravi Varma, Niharika Dinkar

Art, Design & Visual Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Although the Indian artist Ravi Varma (1948-1906) was much celebrated during his lifetime, and not quite forgotten after his death in 1906, in the last decade there has been a true revival of interest in his life and work. In 2008 Ketan Mehta directed a Hindi film Rang Rasiya (Colours of Passion) based on the life of the celebrated Indian painter.1 Another fictionalized biographical sketch of the artist, this time in book form, The Painter: A Life of Ravi Varma by Deepanjana Pal, followed in 2009 and was directed towards a broad audience. In 2010 a more scholarly treatment of …

The Use Of Visual Arts In World Language Instruction To Increase Student Motivation And Attitude, Marilena Bevilacqua Martello Dec 2017

The Use Of Visual Arts In World Language Instruction To Increase Student Motivation And Attitude, Marilena Bevilacqua Martello

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Because of the complexity and changeability that characterize languages, language learners face a number of various factors in their quest to acquire a new language. Nevertheless, it is the level of motivation and personal attitude toward language learning that will determine their rate of success (Dörnyei & Csizér, 1998). The purpose of this study was to find out (1) whether there was a relationship between the use of visual art in world language instruction and student motivation, and (2) whether student writing skills improved when visual art was used for Content Based Instruction. The study used a mixed method research …

The "New Conquering Empire Of Light And Reason": The Civilizing Mission Of William Jones, Niharika Dinkar Jan 2017

The "New Conquering Empire Of Light And Reason": The Civilizing Mission Of William Jones, Niharika Dinkar

Art, Design & Visual Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

But now all is to be changed. All the pleasing illusions, which made power gentle and obedience liberal, which harmonized the different shades of life, and which, by a bland assimilation, incorporated into politics the sentiments which beautify and soften private society, are to be dissolved by this new conquering empire of light and reason. All the decent drapery of life is to be rudely tom off. All the superadded ideas, furnished from the wardrobe of a moral imagination, which the heart owns, and the understanding ratifies, as necessary to cover the defects of our naked, shivering nature, and to …

Arts-Based Educational Research As A Site For Emerging Pedagogy And Developing Mentorship, Anniina Suominen Guyas, Kathleen Keys

Art, Design & Visual Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Highlighting mentoring roles while relaying accounts of arts-based educational research (ABER) practice, we present a personal and conceptual narrative of emergent epistemological and pedagogical understandings encountered during dissertation journeys. Juxtaposing narratives with dialogue, we share postresearch reflexive work, and present a praxis-oriented discussion of ABER. We discuss implications for art education pedagogy, research, and leadership in the context of professional and personal development fostered through mentorship during this transformative ABER experience.

Private Lives And Interior Spaces: Raja Ravi Varma's Scholar Paintings, Niharika Dinkar Jun 2014

Private Lives And Interior Spaces: Raja Ravi Varma's Scholar Paintings, Niharika Dinkar

Art, Design & Visual Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Between 1900 and 1904, the celebrated Indian academic painter Raja Ravi Varma painted two depictions of men reading (plate 1 and plate 2). The works are unusual, so much so, as to be quite unrecognizable from the mythological paintings and princely portraits that earned Ravi Varma his reputation with patrons and clients. Ravi Varma was best known for his paintings of lovelorn women gazing comely at the viewer and although men had featured in several commissioned portraits they were rarely presented as idealised figures. His sketchbooks feature several examples of men in everyday scenes, so it is evident …

Styleless Style? What Photorealism Can Tell Us About “The Sixties”, Craig J. Peariso Aug 2013

Styleless Style? What Photorealism Can Tell Us About “The Sixties”, Craig J. Peariso

Art, Design & Visual Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

This essay reads 1960s “photorealist” painting and its critical reception against two sets of contemporary social analyses. First, it places these artistic and critical works next to Pierre Bourdieu's 1965 text Photography: A Middle-Brow Art, demonstrating that, although the critical literature surrounding “photorealism” tended to assume that its involvement with photography grew out of a desire for an objective realism, contemporary thought on photography was anything but convinced of the medium's transparency. Second, it looks to cultural critics like Susan Sontag and Jacob Brackman to propose that, rather than seeing the art of this period in opposition to the …

Stem + Visual Art: The Development Of An Art Integrated Curricular Resource For K-12 Educators In Idaho, Drew Elaine Williams May 2013

Stem + Visual Art: The Development Of An Art Integrated Curricular Resource For K-12 Educators In Idaho, Drew Elaine Williams

Art Graduate Theses and Projects

The purpose of this M.A. Art Education project is to explore the reasoning, methods and justification for integrated art curricula in K-12 education, drawn from the belief that art is essential and inseparable from academics. In Idaho, the need for art teaching resources is especially great, as present funding circumstances and educational mandates have shifted away from the arts. Teachers do not always have access to resources and high-quality curricular materials. They do not always feel that they possess the knowledge, skills or confidence to successfully implement art lessons within their classrooms. The rationale and methods used to develop a …

Reviewing the existing literature of women and/or mothers in academic roles paints a pretty grim picture. Even worse is the prediction for success that shies far from optimistic. Some inequities in higher education need to be considered: "women lag behind their male counterparts in tenure status, promotion to full professor, and salary. Overall, considering all full-time faculty at all types of institutions, women earn about 80 percent of what men earn" ("Inequities Persist", 2005, p. 1). The adherence to Family Medical Leave Act provisions or other familial and maternal related leave are inconsistent across academia and, even in their most …

Informed. Active. Connected. Arts Educators Advocating For The Arts In Idaho, Heather Hanks

Art Graduate Theses and Projects

PROJECT OVERVIEW: Create a professional marketing handbook for arts educators in Idaho to use as a tool to allow them to more effectively advocate for arts education in Idaho.

For the first time, in 1994, the Goals 2000: Education America Act identified the arts as part of the core curriculum in federal policy. Eighteen years later, available research shows that arts education contributes to critical thinking, creativity, social engagement, cultural awareness, and student achievement. However, despite this “convincing research and strong public support, the arts remain on the margin of education, often the last to be added and the first …

Community Narratives: Initiating An Arts Integrated Curriculum In Public Education, Amber R. Powers May 2012

Community Narratives: Initiating An Arts Integrated Curriculum In Public Education, Amber R. Powers

Art Graduate Theses and Projects

Teachers have power to implement a constructive learning environment through team teaching and aligned instruction where schools can benefit from stronger bonds between students and teachers while providing a learning environment responsive to both academic and social needs. Thus, utilizing a mixed model of art education and standard core curricula can provide students with effective creative-thinking processes to support instruction, and empower students.

This project proposes a model of integrated arts curriculum into public education at the high school level. Arts integration can produce more learning possibilities while informing a community of solutions to larger problems through project-based curriculum design, …

Arts Educators Advocating For The Arts In Idaho, Heather Hanks

Art Graduate Theses and Projects

The purpose of this M.A. Art Education project is to provide Idaho’s arts educators with both a comprehensive arts education advocacy handbook and access to a professionally designed arts education advocacy marketing campaign. Global, national, and local arts advocacy research serve as a foundation for this project. This project has three major components: an arts advocacy handbook, materials for an Idaho-specific arts advocacy marketing campaign, and a social media page. The handbook, “Informed. Active. Connected. Arts Educators Advocating For The Arts in Idaho,” aims to better prepare Idaho’s arts educators to be effective, knowledgeable, and informed advocates for the arts …
