A Language Barrier To Human Capital Development: The Case Of Guatemalan Students, Fidel Pérez Macal
A Language Barrier To Human Capital Development: The Case Of Guatemalan Students, Fidel Pérez Macal
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Not being proficient in a school’s predominant language of instruction can represent a language barrier for students’ human capital development. In Guatemala, 24 languages are spoken apart from Spanish, which is the language of instruction in the majority of schools, and about 40 percent of the total population has a non-Spanish language as a mother tongue. National standardized tests show that non-Spanish mother tongue (non-SMT) students are outperformed by SMT students in elementary and secondary schools.
My thesis analyzes whether non-SMT students face a language barrier and traces its source. Two main findings emerge. First, non-SMT students are not yet …
Self-Regulated Learning Instruction’S Relationships With Teacher Subject Area, Teacher Beliefs, And Teacher Efficacy, Jeffrey Coggin
Self-Regulated Learning Instruction’S Relationships With Teacher Subject Area, Teacher Beliefs, And Teacher Efficacy, Jeffrey Coggin
Dissertations
Self-regulated learning (SRL) instruction develops essential competencies required in the classroom and the workplace (Johnson, 2002; Yan, 2017). SRL instruction helps learners develop the proficiency required for successful self-directed, life-long learning. Furthermore, SRL instruction produces the skills needed to plan, monitor, and achieve learning goals. However, SRL instructional techniques are difficult to implement in the classroom or workplace because educators must transfer learning responsibilities and outcomes to the learner. This study examined the relationships of teacher subject area, teacher beliefs, and teacher efficacy on the use of SRL instruction. The participants included PK-12 teachers from a public-school district in Alabama. …

Academic Digital Badges: Industry, Employment, And Prospects, Terry M. Mcgovern
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Digital badges are becoming more prevalent in the credentialing sector yet there is limited understanding of how the industry is developing or how digital badges influence the hiring process. This study employed an exploratory case method to make known the development of the badging industry. This dynamic new educational technology has a wide range of stakeholders working at establishing standards to ensure consistent and effective application across the badging ecosphere. To understand academic badging further, the researcher conducted a type of field experiment called a résumé audit study. In the late Spring of 2019, the investigator applied to 1,848 unique …

The Role Of Secondary Education In Promoting Sustainable Development In The Caribbean And Latin America, Renee N. Richardson Rose
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
This dissertation research completed a secondary data analysis of international education data collected for Latin American and Caribbean countries. This study utilized a quantitative methodological approach which established correlative, frequency and factor sparsity (Pareto) illustrations. This project sought to understand how secondary education contributes to sustainable development in Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries. The Global Education Monitoring Report 2017 analyzed educational outcomes of second and third world countries and became the basis of this research. However, for this secondary data analysis research project, the researcher only focused on data specific to LAC countries. The following key areas of inquiry: …
Academic Success Indicators Associated With Immediate Postsecondary Enrollment, Alexandria C. Johns
Academic Success Indicators Associated With Immediate Postsecondary Enrollment, Alexandria C. Johns
Education Dissertations
The primary aim of this study was to examine the predictive relationship between human capital academic success indicators and student enrollment or non-enrollment in a postsecondary institution or program. For this study, the researcher analyzed academic records, demographic information, and National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) reports from two comprehensive high schools in one school district to address the research question. A direct logistic regression was used to examine the predictors that influenced the decision of high school graduates from the class of 2017 to enroll in a two-year college, technical college, four-year college, or non-enrollment immediately after graduation from high school. …

The Effects Of Stem Education On Economic Growth, Mallory Croak
The Effects Of Stem Education On Economic Growth, Mallory Croak
Honors Theses
This thesis aims to build on existing studies of human capital and returns to education with a focus on innovation-fueling, STEM-based education, to answer: How does STEM education affect macroeconomic growth across different countries? A review of literature reveals that many studies account for human capital in growth equations, measured as average years of education. However, educational attainment as a measure of human capital leaves out the additional impact of research, technological know-how and innovation on growth. This thesis seeks to bridge some of the overlap between education and innovation as it affects productivity by focusing on education in STEM—fields …
Correlations Between Current And Expected Relocation Quality Of Workplace Factors, Edward Rachny
Correlations Between Current And Expected Relocation Quality Of Workplace Factors, Edward Rachny
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
High-quality hospitality education is important to bring to international locations because it is a foundation for business and tourism. An international network of hospitality schools (HS) has a problem of convincing faculty to relocate to international locations, which limits expansion efforts and the quality of faculty available at less desirable locales. The purpose of this correlation study was to investigate the relationship between varies workplace factors that faculty expect to be of the highest quality, allowing senior management to ensure relocations. The theoretical foundation that grounded this study was Authors' expectancy theory, which stipulates that what people expect to occur …
The College-Transition Experience: The Role Of High School Teachers, Dawn M. Lewis
The College-Transition Experience: The Role Of High School Teachers, Dawn M. Lewis
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
Given the high remediation rate in math, reading, and writing of high school seniors who matriculate to college campuses in the United States, educational leaders have explored ways to address and decrease the need for remedial courses at the postsecondary level. Many K-20 leaders have developed programs and courses to bridge the gap between secondary and postsecondary education, but high remediation rates continue to exist. The purpose of this quantitative study was to explore the role of high school teacher college knowledge in the college-transition process. The survey measured responses using a five-point Likert scale and was administered electronically to …

The Education Pathway Through Social And Economic Integration Of Highly Educated Immigrants: The Case Of Colombians In The United States Of America, Olga Bedoya Arturo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Developed countries have promoted immigration of educated people as a strategy to satisfy the demand for educated labor. Highly educated immigrants' poor language skills, absence of cultural networks, and lack of credentials and recognized professional experience gained in the country of origin are barriers to their social and economic integration (Ferrer & Riddell, 2008; Mattoo, Neagu, & ?zden, 2008; Miranda & Umhoefer, 1998; Zikic, Bonache, & Cerdin, 2010). The purpose of this study was to explore how college experiences in an American college or university facilitate or hinder the transfer and gain of different forms of capital among highly educated …

The study was framed by the social capital theoretical perspective.
The study used quantitative methodology, with …
Triggering Relationships That Contextualize The Pathway For Student Success, Darin R. Eckton
Triggering Relationships That Contextualize The Pathway For Student Success, Darin R. Eckton
Theses and Dissertations
America invests large amounts of money in K-12 education to develop its human capital. As such, K-12 student success is vital to the human capital development and future of America's children and adolescents. There is significant concern for the K-12 students who are predictably at risk of not graduating from high school (e.g., low-income, ethnic minority, and first generation college students) let alone qualifying for and enrolling in postsecondary education. Over the past four decades student success has primarily been explained by sociological research on status attainment as well as social capital and cultural capital. However, very little research addresses …
Student Achievement As An Investment In Human Capital: Using Longitudinal Patterns Of Per Pupil Instructional And Capital Expenditures, Socioeconomic Status, And Past Performance In Predicting Student Achievement, Charles Anthony Roberts
Student Achievement As An Investment In Human Capital: Using Longitudinal Patterns Of Per Pupil Instructional And Capital Expenditures, Socioeconomic Status, And Past Performance In Predicting Student Achievement, Charles Anthony Roberts
Educational Foundations & Leadership Theses & Dissertations
Existing research illustrating a significant relationship between school spending and student achievement is expanding. However, research specifically investigating the relationships between capital expenditures (maintenance, renovations, and construction) and instructional expenditures (teacher quality, teacher salaries, textbooks, class size) with student achievement both individually, and as a function of overall school spending, is lacking. Recent studies have linked school spending to student achievement in an attempt to increase school funding as a response to No Child Left Behind Act (2001) mandates. This study attempts to augment this area of inquiry by providing feedback across the Commonwealth of Virginia on longitudinal patterns of …
Birth Spacing Effect On Children's Attainments: Indentification Using Instrument Variables, Jing Xie
Birth Spacing Effect On Children's Attainments: Indentification Using Instrument Variables, Jing Xie
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
In this study, I address the relationship between an often overlooked dimension of family structure--the spacing between children's births--and the degree of children's attainments such as Mathematics, Reading Cognition and Reading Comprehension. Comparing to the results of OLS estimation, 2SLS Estimation using Twin and Catholic as Instrument Variables shows less significant effects on children's attainments. Hausman Test shows that OLS estimators are not consistent with 2SLS estimators, which means there is endogenous problem in OLS estimation. As the result in 2SLS shows the different spacing effects in different spacing groups, it is possible to use nonlinear estimation (quadratic form of …
Variations In Dropout Rates Across Virginia, Joshua K. Bowser
Variations In Dropout Rates Across Virginia, Joshua K. Bowser
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
Using Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression analysis, this study attempts to capture variation in dropout rates across Virginia counties and cities. With the respective dropout rates as the dependent variable, seven independent variables are used accordingly in order to provide as much explanatory power as possible. At the 10 percent significance level, four of seven variables are statistically significant with an adjusted R2 of .374. Important policy implications can be derived from the model and its statistically significant variables. The model finds that the percentage of blacks in the population, university access, the unemployment rate and single female-headed households to …
