In 1986, sociologist Patricia Hill Collins published the groundbreaking essay, “Learning from the Outsider Within: The Sociological Significance of Black Feminist Thought.” In that pivotal piece, she describes the unique experiences and perspectives of Black women faculty in academia, specifically within predominately-white institutions (PWI’s). Today, Black women faculty account for only 3 percent of all faculty nationwide (Ryu, 2010), and face a myriad of challenges related to their social location. Racism, sexism, and other interlocking oppressions create troubling obstacles for Black women at all levels in academia (Benjamin, 1998; Collins, 2000; Gregory, 2001; hooks, 1989; King, 1988). To better understand how a once well-intentioned concept of financial tuition assistance for college students has devolved into its current troubled and broken state, this doctoral thesis explored the evolution of the U.S. system of federal financial aid in higher education from a historical perspective. The study began with a review of the current state of the federal student aid system in U.S. higher education and then looked back at four key junctures in financial aid's history to understand influences that shaped it to be what it is today. In order to raise awareness about positive images of Black educators, administrators and staff in higher education, the researchers used photography and oral narratives from 11 employees at The City University of New York, York College. Data were analyzed using content analysis. The significant themes found were: (a) Mentor, (b) Leader, and (c) Educator—with the latter emerging as the most frequently identified theme among participants. In today’s higher education environment, costs are increasing, tuition is increasing, subsidies are decreasing, student attrition is extensive, and global competition is increasing. These and other internal and external factors in higher education have created a mounting interest in productivity indicators, the ratio of outputs divided by inputs (Hanushek, 2007; Harris, 2010; Levin, 1993; Massy, 2011; Massy & Wilger, 1992; NCHEMS, 2010; Vedder, 2004). Leaders in higher education as well as external governing bodies are increasingly using productivity indicators to create systems of transparency and accountability. A Comparison Of Perceptions And Implementation Of Shared Governance Between American And Chinese Higher-Education Institutions, Dianyu Zhang

The purpose of this quantitative study was to assess the status of institutional stakeholders’ perceptions and application of shared governance on an American higher education campus and a counterpart in China and determine if there were differences among the groups of stakeholders both within and between the institutions. A 2-inventory researcher-developed survey of shared governance was used to measure each factor.

The data analysis found significant differences among the 4 categories of participants at the Chinese institution. For the General Acceptance dimension of the Perceptions of Shared Governance Inventory (PSGI) the Chinese staff members reported significantly higher scores than all …

The Voices Of Higher Education Service-Learning Directors: A Qualitative Inductive Analysis, Kelsey Woodard

This research explored issues surrounding service-learning directors (SLDs) within higher education institutions, including who they are, how they became SLDs, and what they experience in the role. Qualitative data were drawn from in-depth interviews of 11 SLDs, as well as review of their vitaes. A qualitative inductive analysis was conducted in which important patterns, themes, and interrelationships that emerged from the data were coded into a category system of major themes and subthemes.

Data analysis revealed the following major themes: (1.0): all the SLDs came from various helping profession backgrounds, with interesting journeys to become a SLD; (2.0) many SLD’s …

Given growing interest in accountability and outcomes, the North Central Association's Higher Learning Commission developed a new path for accreditation, the Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP). The goal is to infuse continuous improvement and quality in the culture of higher education, and to blend traditional accreditation with the philosophy and techniques of the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program. Yet, little is known about the key performance indicators (KPI) that colleges and universities are using to improve their quality and continuous improvement processes.

Our Center for Excellence & Innovation has brought together our Center for Excellence in Teaching & Learning, our Center for Excellence in Scholarship and Research, Assessment Coordinator and our Educational Technologists to serve faculty in a “one-stop shopping” venue. Through integrated marketing we inform faculty of resources and opportunities for professional development working diligently to ensure that faculty not only receive needed assistance but also experience a warm, welcoming environment. Seven principles of learning space design contribute to this collaborative, learner-centered environment: comfort, aesthetics, affordance, flow, equity, blending (a mixture of technological and face-to-face pedagogical resources.

Despite tremendous recent interest in the subject of student debt by both researchers and policy makers, little is known about how the distribution of college graduate debt has been evolving and what factors can explain it. We use National Postsecondary Student Aid Study data from 1990 through 2008 to document the evolution of college graduate debt profiles. We find that growth in debt over the 1990s was rapid and occurred throughout the distribution; during the 2000s, in contrast, debt grew appreciably only for the top quartile. Employing several decomposition techniques, we exploit the richness of the data to explain these …

Differences And Similarities Between U.S. And Non-U.S. Citizens In Graduate School Perceptions, Experiences And Career Preparation, Fred Cline

International students account for a significant percentage of enrollees in graduate programs in the United States. Nearly 30% of the doctoral degrees awarded in the U.S. go to non-U.S. citizens, and about two-thirds remain in the U.S. for their career. This study compares survey results from 1,000 international and 4,200 U.S. respondents on their beliefs about the value of a graduate degree, the quality and sources of information they received about graduate school and careers, and their job satisfaction after completing their degree. Findings suggest that international students need additional support and information when considering careers related to graduate degrees.

Little is known about what graduate students know about career options or how they gain this knowledge. In this study we examined responses of graduate deans and graduate students regarding the level of knowledge students have about career options before, during, and following graduate school.Results indicate that, in general, graduate deans believe students have limited knowledge of career options. Students report that they receive insufficient, unhelpful, and inaccurate information about possible careers. In addition, the source of career information and types of careers encouraged by faculty are somewhat different depending upon students’ gender, race/ethnicity, and field of study.
