Helping Hand Or A Hurdle Too High? An Evaluation Of Developmental Coursework At Arkansas's Flagship University, Evan Rhinesmith

High school graduation serves as an important gateway to increased professional opportunities. Not only does a high school graduate improve the national economy, a high school diploma is the key to opening the door to college. However, obtaining a high school degree does not necessarily ensure college readiness. In fact, many high school graduates are not prepared for college coursework, but still apply to and attend college in our college for all system. The class of 2013 saw only 38 percent of students test at a level considered prepared for college on the reading portion of the NAEP, but the …

Promises Fulfilled? A Systematic Review Of The Impacts Of Promise Programs, Elise Swanson, Angela Watson, Gary W. Ritter, Malachi Nichols
Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications
This review examines the existing evidence on the impacts of Promise Programs on community development, K-12 academic achievement, and student postsecondary outcomes. Promise Programs are place-based, guaranteed college scholarships offered to all students who graduate from a certain school or district while meeting the minimum thresholds of the program. We delineate Promise Programs by their design - whether the scholarships are available to all students, are awarded based on merit, or are awarded based on need. We also note the applicability of Promise Programs - whether the funds be used at a wide range of postsecondary institutions, or if they …
Whether To Approve An Education Savings Account Program In Texas: Preventing Crime Does Pay, Corey A. Deangelis, Patrick J. Wolf
Whether To Approve An Education Savings Account Program In Texas: Preventing Crime Does Pay, Corey A. Deangelis, Patrick J. Wolf
Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications
Decision-makers in Texas have proposed an Education Savings Account (ESA) that would allow all families to take a fraction of their public education financing to a school of their choice. If the ESA funding amount exceeds the school tuition level, families would be able to use these funds for other educational expenses such as tutoring, textbooks, educational therapy, online learning, and college costs. While this is may be viewed as obvious benefits to individual children and their families, the impacts on society overall are less clear. We estimate the impact of the proposed ESA on criminality from 2016 to 2035. …

Scriptural Foundations For Academic Disciplines: A Biblical Theme Approach, Michael E. Cafferky
Scriptural Foundations For Academic Disciplines: A Biblical Theme Approach, Michael E. Cafferky
Faculty Works
This article presents the thesis that major themes of the Bible can form the biblical foundation for academic disciplines as taught in Christian primary schools, secondary schools and undergraduate and graduate studies in higher education. The Bible is not a comprehensive encyclopedia of knowledge; however, its perspective offers a deeper theological and philosophical basis for any academic discipline.

Teachers’ Nascent Praxes Of Care: Potentially Decolonizing Approaches To School Violence In Trinidad, Hakim Mohandas Amani Williams
Teachers’ Nascent Praxes Of Care: Potentially Decolonizing Approaches To School Violence In Trinidad, Hakim Mohandas Amani Williams
Africana Studies Faculty Publications
Zero tolerance, punitive and more negative peace-oriented approaches dominate school violence interventions, despite research indicating that comprehensive approaches are more sustainable. In this article, I use data from a longitudinal case study at a Trinidadian secondary school to focus on the role of teachers and their impact on school violence; I show that institutional constraints are not fully deterministic, as teachers sometimes deploy their agency to efficacious ends. In combining Noddings’ postulations on care and Freire’s notions of praxis as a symbiosis of reflection and action, I explicate the nascent praxes of care of six teachers at this school, as …

Antimicrobial Interventions Applied To Beef Sub-Primals For The Control Of Escherichia Coli And Their Impact On Ground Beef Quality, Kelly Ann Mccarty
Antimicrobial Interventions Applied To Beef Sub-Primals For The Control Of Escherichia Coli And Their Impact On Ground Beef Quality, Kelly Ann Mccarty
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Due to their severe health implications, seven shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) serotypes were declared adulterants by USDA-FSIS in raw, non-intact beef products. Small business beef processing facilities are being asked to implement an intervention on the beef sub-primals and trim they receive for ground beef production. This study evaluates the efficacy of reducing rifampicin-resistant E. coli (E. coliRif) using 4.5% lactic acid (LA), 2.5% Beefxide™ (BX), and 380 ppm peroxyacetic acid (PAA) when applied by dip, spray or electrostatic spray (ESS) to the mostly fat lateral surface and mostly lean medial surface of beef shoulder clods …

School Crisis Plans: Are You Prepared?, David Alan Dolph
School Crisis Plans: Are You Prepared?, David Alan Dolph
Educational Leadership Faculty Publications
The majority of states have statutes requiring school districts to develop school safety plans focused on preventing and responding to crisis situations. Plans may include protocols for disseminating school safety plans to appropriate personnel; mandatory fire, tornado, or active drills; and community involvement.
Although the degree of comprehensiveness of those plans depends on state legislation, all should include the basic elements offered here, focused on creating secure school environments.

Oral Reading Fluency And Differentiation, Luci Hartmann
Oral Reading Fluency And Differentiation, Luci Hartmann
FL MED Educational Leadership Capstones
The purpose of this study is to examine oral reading fluency (ORF) and instructional differentiation at the elementary school level. ORF is a fundamental component needed for reading comprehension. Students need sufficient ORF to fully comprehend what they are learning in all subject matter. Using the Diagnostic Indicator of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS), the ORF of students in kindergarten through fifth grade were assessed three times during the school year. After each assessment, student scores were analyzed to determine which of three different instructional strategies would be used to improve each student’s ORF. The results of my Capstone Project …

Evaluating Students’ Assignments Using A Four-Point Achievement Scale Adapted From The Work Of, Jenalisa Zummo
FL MED Educational Leadership Capstones
This capstone project illustrated the implementation of standards-based grading (SBG) in a geometry college preparatory classroom, which allows teachers to report more accurately and effectively students’ successes. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using a four-point achievement scale adapted from the work of Dr. Robert Marzano. By reporting grades based on curriculum standards and content level, grades show students and parents validity in progress on meeting the standards.

Proceedings of the International Colloquium on Languages, Cultures, Identity in School and Society
The influx of immigrants in countries worldwide, coupled with the challenges associated to the schooling of their children in host countries' schools, makes it more necessary than ever to broaden our knowledge of the linguistic, ethnic, and cultural realities derived from this phenomenon. - Individual, school, and societal bilingualism/multilingualism-related issues
- Multi/Transculturalism-related issues in families, schools, and society
- Impact of bi/multilingualism on individuals' and societies' language, culture, and identity
