Being Black In U.S. Urban Schools: No Assumptions, Lavada Taylor Brandon, Mary J. Didelot Dec 2003

Being Black In U.S. Urban Schools: No Assumptions, Lavada Taylor Brandon, Mary J. Didelot

Essays in Education

To be an African-American student attending a school dominated by working class, urban, minority learners means failure. Working class African-American students are not experiencing education, they are colliding with education. These collisions will continue as long as they are facilitated by the assumptive dominant theories regarding African- American students’ educational experiences. One strategy to constructively disrupt these assumptive theoretical notions buried within current theory is to look to a working class, urban African-American student’s qualitative longitudinal formation of identity as she progresses from student to teacher within the learning process as categorized by Bateson (1972). The understanding gleaned from this …

Adult Esl Oral Reading Fluency And Silent Reading Comprehension, Kristin Lems Dec 2003

Adult Esl Oral Reading Fluency And Silent Reading Comprehension, Kristin Lems

Dissertations

A descriptive study of second language adults studying ESL at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels in a post-secondary academic program revealed that their oral reading fluency had a significant, low-to-moderate correlation with scores on a measure of silent reading comprehension. The correlation was slightly stronger for measures of accuracy than speed, and strongest for miscue ratio. The correlation increased as proficiency level increased. Among different first language groups, the correlation was highest for Hispanic learners, and lowest for Chinese. Furthermore, all fluency measures correlated better with a listening measure than with the silent reading comprehension measure. When a system …

Flarr Pages #31: Review Time, Andre Lebugle

FLARR Pages

In my first-year French classes, on the day before a test, I usually spend forty to fifty minutes reviewing. Since the students have learned a lot of new material over a period of perhaps two weeks, their knowledge may need refreshing. There are a number of exercises one can do and it is advisable to review as much as possible and resort some of the time to questions similar to those in the upcoming tests. The quickest way to review effectively is through very simple translation into the target language.

Emergency Room Mode--A Service-Learning Case, Lee F. Wilberschied, Lisa Bauer, Carla Gerdes

World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications

This study examines the outcomes of a two-part service learning project in a summer practicum for English as Second Language (ESL) teacher endorsement candidates. First, 10 mainstream K12 teachers with 2 to 30 years' experience needed practice teaching students with linguistic and cultural differences. Their own service learning was to implement a summer family literacy program for ESL students. Second, these teachers had planned a service learning component for the ESL students. Teachers, feeling obliged to correct all the perceived linguistic deficits in students, went into a panic that they described as "emergency room mode." Regarding service learning and any …

Making It Real: Alana Teacher Education Preparation, Communication And Diversity Suppositions, Keith Orlando Hilton, Harriett Arnold

Essays in Education

This article clarifies brisk salient education and communication perspectives on the need for and role of ALANA (African, Latino, Asian and Native American) teachers and teacher education students in the nation. From the co-authors’ perspectives as African American professors of prospective ALANA K-12 teachers, the notion of “Making it Real: ALANA Teacher Education Preparation, Communication and Diversity Suppositions” is an aerial design that continues to be drafted. This design must be multicultural, multiethnic, multimedia and multi-disciplined in order to be fecund. The creation of a video by ALANA university teacher education students also demonstrated that diversity is invaluable and central …

Three hundred eighteen Thai freshmen participated in this study. The freshmen were divided into two groups according to their high school locations, Bangkok and other cities of Thailand. The Force Concept Inventory was used to probe the freshmen's understandings and misconceptions. The SPSS and EXCEL programs were used to analyze the data. The Vote On Bilingual Education And Latino Identity In Massachusetts, Jorge Capetillo-Ponce Apr 2003

The Vote On Bilingual Education And Latino Identity In Massachusetts, Jorge Capetillo-Ponce

Gastón Institute Publications

In November 2002, the Massachusetts electorate voted overwhelmingly to pass Referendum Ballot Question 2 (Q. 2), sponsored by California millionaire Ron Unz. The passage of this initiative by close to 70% of the voters effectively ended bilingual education in the state as it had been known for thirty years. Exit polling done at selected cities in Massachusetts by the Mauricio Gaston Institute and UMass Poll revealed, however, that out of a total 1,491 Latinos polled, a vast majority of them, around 93%, had voted in favor of rejecting Q. 2 and keeping bilingual education in place.

Indeed, Q. 2 became …

Missing Data And Irt Item Parameter Estimation, Christine E. Demars Apr 2003

Missing Data And Irt Item Parameter Estimation, Christine E. Demars

Department of Graduate Psychology - Faculty Scholarship

Non-randomly missing data has theoretically different implications for item parameter estimation depending on whether joint maximum likelihood or marginal maximum likelihood methods are used in the estimation. The objective of this paper is to illustrate what potentially can happen, under these estimation procedures, when there is an association between ability and the absence of response. In this example, data is missing because some students, particularly low-ability students, did not complete the test.

Meeting Ncate Standards Through Service-Learning: Diversity, National Service-Learning In Teacher Education Partnership Jan 2003

Meeting Ncate Standards Through Service-Learning: Diversity, National Service-Learning In Teacher Education Partnership

Diversity

Over the past several years, college campuses across North America have seen an increase in the variety of service-learning projects integrated with academic course goals. Federal and state governments are asking schools, colleges, and departments of education to promote service-learning because of service-learning's unique capacity to promote high-quality learning and civic engagement in its participants. Teacher educators are responding by embedding service- learning into various teacher education courses and they report positive outcomes. For example, experiences in culturally diverse and/or low-income schools and communities juxtaposed with multicultural education courses provide preservice teachers the opportunity to gain a better understanding of …

Comprehension And Vocabulary Strategies Using Related Tradebooks With Social Studies For Bilingual And Bicultural Middle School Students, Jennifer Suzanne Tindall Jan 2003

Comprehension And Vocabulary Strategies Using Related Tradebooks With Social Studies For Bilingual And Bicultural Middle School Students, Jennifer Suzanne Tindall

All Graduate Projects

In many schools, students from ethnic minority groups are immersed in secondlanguage reading curricula with minimal attention to their native language literacy (Droop & Verhoeven, 2003). These children face the challenge ofleaming to read in languages that they have not mastered orally. As a result, these second-language students can then experience considerable gaps in their understanding ofreading because reading instruction in any language strongly builds on oral language proficiency. For these reasons, second-language literacy learning is an enormous issue in our schools today (Goodman, Goodman, & Flores, 1984). This is why the author chose to research effective reading instruction for …
