Ethics In Higher Education, Susan R. Madsen

Susan R. Madsen

This presentation focuses on the following Robinson and Moulton quote found in the book "Ethical Problems in Higher Education": The myth that institutions of higher education are sheltered from the struggles and conflicts of the “real world” is widely accepted even by people who ought to know better—those of us in academic settings who confront, struggle with, bemoan, or try to ignore the serious ethical issues that arise. John H Bishop

[Excerpt] How much should doctorate training be subsidized? The answer proposed is, "Doctorate training should be subsidized to the extent and only to the extent that it produces externality or public benefits – i.e. benefits received by people other than the one receiving the diploma." This value judgment derives from three propositions: (1) In general, an adult knows better than anyone else what is best for himself; (2) the price (measured in both time and money) he is willing to pay for graduate education is the best measure of how much he values it relative to other offerings; and (3) …

Global Learning Through Partnered Inquiry, Rebecca Hovey May 2009

Global Learning Through Partnered Inquiry, Rebecca Hovey

Rebecca Hovey

The emergence of Global Learning associated with the internationalization of U.S. higher education signals a convergence of international/global studies and international education with the potential to dramatically innovate and transform the academy. Over the past decade the original aim of international education to foster intercultural understanding has become linked with the aims of international studies to enhance our knowledge of the world, and in particular, the ways in which new knowledge is created through non-western epistemologies and cultural perspectives. This paper seeks to situate the emerging discourse and initiatives around global learning in an understanding of the transformation potential of …

Ethics In Publishing, Susan R. Madsen

Susan R. Madsen

The primary purpose of this innovative session is to provide HRD faculty, administrators, and graduate students the forum to listen to panelists and then discuss current issues and challenges related to the ethical decision-making and behavior of researchers and scholars as it relates to publishing. It will provide attendees the opportunity to challenge behaviors and practices commonly seen and held within this arena. I (Susan R. Madsen) just faciliated a very successful session at the Academy of Management in Anaheim (August, 2008) on this topic and realized that we need the same conversation (different panelists) in the AHRD. In fact, …
