Tupac Shakur, Revolution Crenshaw (1991) changed the discussion of diversity and institutional racism by introducing the critical-theoretical concept of intersectionality. Those in power—those with money—make the rules. Once institutionalized and backed financially, rules are difficult to break. In modern K-12 and higher education, some of these rules relate to students’ and families’ ability to afford course and co-curricular materials. One of the largest problems for students who use screen readers is reading PDFs. Even the intellectual content of their courses is easier to understand than trying to figure how to read the PDF. Sometimes PDFs cannot be read and other PDFs are read as blocks of text without an easy way to jump to different sections, which is problematic for long documents in particular. This article describes an exploratory research study assessing the level of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance and general accessibility of online information resources at a mid-sized, 4-year, public institution in the state of Ohio. A rubric, available freely online as a living document, was developed based on the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0, Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and web design best practices. In this paper we present a detailed analysis of the design and implementation of an educational game targeting young women entrepreneurs by a predominantly male team. During the process, we arrived at assumptions based on intrinsic and extrinsic influences that effected the design of the game. After creating a prototype, the game was provided to the target audience during a usability test. Our observations reveal that even after following a rigorous and agile development model that included stakeholders at several time frames, we were not successful in delivering the desired experience to our target audience. In this study, we examined the effects and impacts of infusing UDL teaching strategies into a semester-long, elementary social studies methods course for students enrolled in a BA/M.Ed. program. Faculty planned and then spiraled UDL content into the course. We provided support to Teacher Candidates (TCs) with course instruction and materials, lesson modeling, video examples, and targeted assignments to increase their knowledge, and use of, UDL and CRT principles and guidelines in their lesson planning. Catholic school principals typically serve as the prime decision-makers in admission and enrollment issues. A key factor in this decision-making can be the principals’ perceptions and attitudes about servicing students with disabilities within a Catholic school context. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the attitudes and perceptions of Catholic school principals toward inclusion of students with disabilities in Catholic schools. Overall, a majority of surveyed principals reported a positive attitude toward including students with disabilities. Some significant relationships were found between principal’s pervious experiences with students with disabilities and the principals’ willingness to enroll students with disabilities. …

School discipline has traditionally endorsed the use of exclusionary practices (i.e. suspension and expulsion). Such practices can have a negative short- and long-term impact on student lives, and tend to be enforced disproportionately with certain student populations. Although public school discipline policies have received increased scrutiny in recent years, Catholic school policies have received very little attention. This study presents the results of a content analysis of the written discipline policies of 33 Catholic secondary schools from two dioceses within a major metropolitan area. This presentation will share the results of two pilot studies using Circles. Circles give people an opportunity to speak and listen to one another in an atmosphere of safety and equality. Circles were used to build and strengthen relationships as well as deliver academic content and increase social/emotional learning principles. One pilot study focused on infusing children’s literature into Circle lessons in a 3rd grade classroom and the second pilot study targeted academic motivation and lack of connectedness for high school students in 9th and 11th grade.

Research on the experiences of college students with disabilities and the extent to which student affairs practitioners and scholars are meeting their needs is sparse. This article advances the concept of Universal Research Design (URD) by discussing the application of universal design principles to research on college students. Four critical considerations that student affairs practitioners and scholars should address when conducting disability research include (a) language and operational definitions, (b) accessing participants, (c) data collection for both qualitative and quantitative research, and (d) researcher’s positionality and just representation.
