Distance Learning Programs For Pathology Education, Bruce Fenderson, Anthony J. Frisby

Anthony J Frisby, PhD

In this article we describe the development of distance learning programs for pathology education at Thomas Jefferson University. Our first step was to create a one-credit computer lab for an existing graduate course (Pathologic Aspects of Disease, PA570). Students use this computer lab to review case studies, submit essays, and take weekly quizzes. A discussion board is used to publish student essays and provide a forum for class discussion. Examination scores and academic progress are reported online. Our second step was to add lectures to create a complete, three-credit distance learning course for pathology education. (Pathophysiology of Human Disease, NU570). …

An online epidemiology course was developed, implemented, and evaluated for graduate nursing students through the collaborative efforts of nursing faculty and information, education, and instructional design staff of the library at a health sciences university. This epidemiology course is a core curriculum course for graduate nursing students. The course was piloted with 14 students (one student in Romania); the initial online offering ran concurrently with a traditional classroom section. Extensive evaluation data were collected and analyzed to compare the effectiveness of the classroom and distance-learning formats. Areas of evaluation included objective measures, such as midterm and final examination scores and …

An Operational Measure Of Physician Lifelong Learning: Its Development, Components And Preliminary Psychometric Data, Mohammadreza Hojat, Thomas J. Nasca, James B. Erdmann, Anthony J. Frisby, Jon J. Veloski, Joseph S. Gonnella

Anthony J Frisby, PhD

Despite the emphasis placed on physicians’ lifelong learning, no psychometrically sound instrument has been developed to provide an operational measure of the concept and its components among physicians. The authors designed this study to develop a tool for measuring physician lifelong learning, to identify its underlying components and to assess its psychometric properties. A 37-item questionnaire was developed, based on a review of literature and the results of two pilot studies. Psychometric analyses of the responses of 160 physicians identified 19 items that were included in the Jefferson Scale of Physician Lifelong Learning. Factor analysis of the 19 items showed …

Developing And Sustaining A Web-Based Library Newsletter, Liz Mikita, Daniel G. Kipnis, Anthony J. Frisby

Anthony J Frisby, PhD

Before the rising popularity of the Internet in the mid 1990s, Scott Memorial Library, like most others, used printed newsletters to inform users about new resources and services. The JEFFLINE Forum, our attempt to resuscitate the Library's newsletter by employing the technical advantages-and increasing presence-of the Web, debuted in October of 1999. The fifth anniversary of the Forum seemed like a good time to look back at its evolution and to examine some of the challenges inherent in developing and sustaining a library newsletter.

Reporting And Comparing School Performances, Geoff N. Masters, Glenn Rowley, John Ainley, Siek Toon Khoo

Dr John Ainley

This report provides advice on the collection and reporting of information about the performances of Australian schools. The focus is on the collection of nationally comparable data. Two purposes are envisaged: use by education authorities and governments to monitor school performances and, in particular, to identify schools that are performing unusually well or unusually poorly given their circumstances; and use by parents/caregivers and the public to make informed judgements about, and meaningful comparisons of, schools and their offerings. Our advice is based on a review of recent Australian and international research and experience in reporting on the performances of schools. …

Participation In And Progress Through New Apprenticeships, John Ainley, Matthew Corrigan

Dr John Ainley

New Apprenticeships provide a pathway from school to adult working life for a significant proportion of each cohort of young people and thus make a potentially important contribution to the formation of skills for individuals and for the community as a whole. New Apprenticeships are based on a formal combination of study and work that links learning in the workplace with learning in an educational institution. They incorporate both traditional apprenticeships and traineeships. This report focuses on two broad research questions : What are the characteristics of young people who commence a New Apprenticeship overall, as well as of those …

Conceptualising And Researching Student Wellbeing, Geoff N. Masters

Prof Geoff Masters AO

Schools have always seen it as part of their role to support and encourage children's all-round development, including their cognitive, interpersonal, social, aesthetic, physical and moral/spiritual growth. Beyond the academic, schools have been committed to children's general wellbeing; in seeing children develop into well-rounded, healthy individuals who can take their place as informed, principled and engaged members of society. In fulfilling this role, schools have worked alongside and complemented families, churches and other institutions in the community. In recent years, Australian schools and education systems have made efforts to clarify the broad purposes of schooling and to introduce ways of …

An Ugly Game, John R. Kilbourne Dec 2008

An Ugly Game, John R. Kilbourne

John R. Kilbourne

As a college professor and parent of a college athlete, I have been reading with great interest reports that small colleges have been seeking to increase their enrollments by promoting their sports programs. An article in The Chronicle last fall, for example, described how the president of Adrian College, in Michigan, devised a plan to raise enrollment by expanding the institution's intercollegiate-athletics program and assigning recruiting quotas to its coaches. Adrian's recruiting plan requires its 16 head coaches to sign up almost 200 athletes per year. Coaches who fail to meet their assigned quotas risk losing their jobs. The total …

Teaching Quality And Student Outcomes: Academic Achievement And Educational Engagement In Rural Northwest China, Xuehui An, Emily C. Hannum, Tanja Sargent Dec 2008

Teaching Quality And Student Outcomes: Academic Achievement And Educational Engagement In Rural Northwest China, Xuehui An, Emily C. Hannum, Tanja Sargent

Emily C. Hannum

A central task of educational researchers has been to uncover factors that improve student academic achievement. Research in both developed and developing nations during the past few decades has analysed the links between educational outcomes and school physical resources, teacher quality and children's demographic and family background. Importantly, research on teacher and school effects in developing countries has focused on factors such as human capital, economic resources and physical infrastructure, the so-called input factors in the "black box" production function model of school outcomes. Fewer studies have focused on the "softer" classroom process factors that might be seen as important …

Keeping Teachers Happy: Job Satisfaction Among Primary School Teachers In Rural Northwest China, Tanja Sargent, Emily Hannum

Emily C. Hannum

Numerous empirical studies from developing countries have noted that parental education has a robust and positive effect on child learning, a result that is often attributed to more educated parents making greater investments in their children's human capital. However, the nature of any such investment has not been well understood. This study examines how parental education affects various parental investments in goods and time used in children's human capital production via an unusually detailed survey from rural China. It is found that more educated parents make greater educational investments in both goods and time and that these relationships are generally …

International Terrorism:Role ,Responsibility And Operation Of Media Channles, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr

Ratnesh Dwivedi

"Terrorism" is a term that cannot be given a stable defintion. Or rather, it can, but to do so forstalls any attempt to examine the major feature of its relation to television in the contemporary world. As the central public arena for organising ways of picturing and talking about social and political life, TV plays a pivotal role in the contest between competing defintions, accounts and explanations of terrorism. Which term is used in any particular context is inextricably tied to judgemements about the legitimacy of the action in question and of the political system against which it is directed. …

Quranic Verse Recitation Recognition Module For Educational Programme, Noor Jamaliah Ibrahim, Zulkifli Mohd Yusoff, Zaidi Razak

Noor Jamaliah Ibrahim

In the process of learning al-Quran, reciters are required to learn al-Quran through the manual method of Quran reading skills of talaqqi and musyafahah method. These methods are described as face to face learning process between students and teachers (Mudarris), where listening, correction of al-Quran recitation and repetition of the correct al-Quran recitation takes place. The reason behind this method is to allow Mudarris to check the Tajweed rules of the Quran recitation in real time. However, the current methods of Quran recitation are believed become unattractive and less effective to be implemented, especially for j-QAF students. Focus on j-QAF …

Evaluating Community-Based Programs: Challenges And Lessons From The Front-Line, Sallie Newell, Anne Graham, Judy Cashmore Oct 2008

Evaluating Community-Based Programs: Challenges And Lessons From The Front-Line, Sallie Newell, Anne Graham, Judy Cashmore

Professor Anne Graham

Over recent years, government funding for communitybased support programs has increasingly been directed through non-government organisations (NGOs) – with an obligation on them to evaluate and report on the effectiveness of funded programs, rather than just planning and implementing them. While this allows for more locally-relevant and responsive programs, which most NGOs are comfortable developing and delivering, the emphasis on formal evaluation and reporting of program effectiveness can be more challenging – for both NGOs and external evaluators. The Centre for Children and Young People has supported a number of government-funded NGOs in meeting such evaluation obligations. This paper will …

Homogeneous Dbd In N2: 1) Lif, Talif And Electrical Measurements, N. Gherardi, Et. Es-Sebbar, C. Sarra-Bourret, N. Naudé, F. Massines

Dr. Et-touhami Es-sebbar

In this paper we compare two different discharges that can be obtained in a DBD configuration, that is to say the filamentary discharge (usual regime in atmospheric DBD) with the Atmospheric Pressure Townsend Discharge (APTD), which is a homogeneous regime obtained in nitrogen atmosphere. The aim is to help in the understanding of the processes which control the transition from one regime to the other. To do so, the discharge is characterized through electrical measurements, coupled with optical diagnostics among which Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) for radical density measurements. The influence of the addition of small quantities of additives on …
