College Athletics As A College Education, John R. Kilbourne
College Athletics As A College Education, John R. Kilbourne
John R. Kilbourne
It is quite obvious that the institutions that compete at the elite level of intercollegiate sports have failed miserably in their responsibilities to provide education about sports to the young men and women who participate in college athletics. If colleges and universities are sincere about their efforts to reform athletics, they must do better.

Kindergartners Perception Of The Classroom Computer, Kathleen Strub-Richards
Kindergartners Perception Of The Classroom Computer, Kathleen Strub-Richards
Kathleen A Strub-Richards
Computers have an overwhelming influence in the school and home environment. Computers are available in many early childhood classrooms and young children have easy access to them. This case study examined the youngest members of the elementary school’s perception of the classroom computer. A seven-week research study explored the role of the computer in a kindergarten classroom. Sixteen kindergartners were interviewed and observed. The children’s perceptions of the computer were recorded through conversations, interactions with the computer, classroom observations and computer lab observations. Computer programs, computer integration and the role of the teacher were examined. Results from the interpretation of …

Item Format Types And Their Influence On Cross-National Comparisons Of Sudent Performance, Alla Routitsky, Ross Turner
Item Format Types And Their Influence On Cross-National Comparisons Of Sudent Performance, Alla Routitsky, Ross Turner
Dr Alla Routitsky
An important decision to be made in the design and implementation of large-scale assessments is the appropriate balance of item types — in particular the balance between objectively coded multiple-choice type items and item types that require coding by trained professionals. Decisions made in this regard depend upon finding an appropriate balance in the light of cost and construct validity concerns. Given the importance of this decision there are surprisingly few international studies that consider the effect of item format on achievement and the results of these studies are not consistent. Some of these studies do, however, illustrate that item …

On School Funding, State Is Inadequate, Richard E. Day
Richard E. Day
While it may be amusing to watch those in power above us blame each other and make excuses, in the end, it is disheartening. Those of us at the school level know that no matter who ultimately gets blamed, we're the ones who must be here for the children. We are reminded daily, there can be no excuses for failure. The legislature, the school board -- everyone -- must do his or her job, so that we can do ours.

Educating Mexico's Indians, Marion Lloyd

The Autonomous Indigenous University of Mexico is the first large-scale attempt to provide a college education to the country's 10 million Indians. Through an unconventional study plan -- no professors and no classrooms -- and an inventive curriculum, the institution's founders, a group of academics from the University of the West, in the Sinaloan town of Los Mochis, have sought since 1999 to meld a traditional Western education with an emphasis on knowledge that is particularly relevant in indigenous communities.

Factors Contributing To College Retention In The Native Hawaiian Population, Linda Serra Hagedorn, Katherine Tibbetts, Hye Sun Moon, Jaime Lester
Linda Serra Hagedorn
Only a few rare educational studies have focused on the indigenous population of Hawaii; making Native Hawaiians one of the most understudied populations in the educational literature. Usually when Hawaiians are included in a study they are bundled under the heading of “Asian Americans”. This study uses data from a unique project that focuses on alumni and a set of students who received a special financial aid from a private school dedicated to the education of Native Hawaiians. The study proceeds to identify the factors leading to the acquisition of a bachelor’s degree of Native Hawaiians from the high school …

What is like for an American family to raise their children in African country? What is it like for the children who are sometimes known as "third culture kids" because they are neither totally a part of their parents' culture nor totally a part of the adopted African culture, but rather are a combination of both?
From Noncompliance To Columbine: Capturing Student Perspectives To Understand Noncompliance And Violence In Public Schools, Doyle Stevick, Bradley Levinson
From Noncompliance To Columbine: Capturing Student Perspectives To Understand Noncompliance And Violence In Public Schools, Doyle Stevick, Bradley Levinson
Doyle Stevick
The paper reviews a number of ethnographic studies of students in U.S. secondary schools to help understand the causes of a range of student behaviors from minor non- compliance to lethal violence. Based on these studies, as well personal experience, the authors suggest that educators and educational researchers approach and understand student perspectives on school life. Such perspectives often reveal the logic of non- compliance, and show that aspects of school structure and practice can exacerbate or contribute to violence. Student non-compliance and alienation can escalate into violence if the student view is not regularly consulted in schools.

The Image Of Libraries And Librarians In Children's Literature, Dorothy N. Bowen
Dorothy N. Bowen
A new action figure of a frumpy librarian who moves her index finger to her lips with 'amazing push-button shushing action!' has librarians around the world raising their voices in protest." A public library director from Maine said in response to the bespectacled woman in a cardigan, long plain skirt and sensible shoes, "The shushing thing just put me right over the edge. It's so stereotypical, I could scream."

African American Student Athletes' Perceptions Of Career Transition In Sport: A Qualitative And Visual Elicitation, Keith Harrison
African American Student Athletes' Perceptions Of Career Transition In Sport: A Qualitative And Visual Elicitation, Keith Harrison
Dr. C. Keith Harrison
This study focuses on 26 African American athletes and explores their perceptions of athletic career transition. Participants consisted of student athletes from a United States National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division IIA institution in the Southeastern region. Participants completed the Life After Sports Scale (LASS), a 58-item inventory utilized to qualitatively and quantitatively examine seven different domains which influence perceptions of the career transition process. The scope of this inquiry examines the qualitative domain of the LASS in which participants were visually primed with a narrative description of a student athlete that has made transition out of sport successfully. Five …

Reconceptualising Fear In Young Children, Reesa Sorin
Reconceptualising Fear In Young Children, Reesa Sorin
Reesa Sorin
This paper is based on research with preschool-aged children, their parents and their caregivers about the fears they experience and how these fears are addressed, both in the home and in the preschool. Participants were asked to identify the fears experienced by the children in the study, based on Ollendick's Fear Survey Schedule for Children and Spence's Measure of Anxiety Symptoms in Preschoolers. From their responses and the researcher's observations, current fear categories are challenged. Early childhood fear has been reconceptualised into the following categories: Fear of Separation from the Attachment Figure; Fear of the Unknown; Fear of Being Harmed; …

Recognition Of Prior Learning: Why Is It So Difficult To Accredit Learning That Has Occurred Outside The Academy Towards The Award Of A Qualification? A Report From Australia, Leesa Wheelahan, Peter J. Miller, Diane Newton
Peter Miller
One of the key drivers for RPL is its perceived capacity to act as a mechanism for social inclusion within the context of lifelong learning policy frameworks that seek to “encourage formal learning, to promote links between it and informal learning and to improve opportunities for people to use their informal learning to gain recognised qualifications” (Young, 2001: 4). However, it has not acted as a mechanism for social inclusion in Australia or internationally. This paper seeks to answer the question: why is it so difficult to accredit learning that has occurred outside formal education and training towards the award …
