Carroy U "Cuf" Ferguson, Ph.D.

Let us seek and find ways to experience Joy as a way "to be" in the present for our individual and collective Well Being.
And, let us create and implement Visions for evolving our consciousness in ways that can sustain our individual and collective Well Being.

Shining A Humanistic Light On Racism.Docx

Carroy U "Cuf" Ferguson, Ph.D.

On July 14, 2019, race-linked tweets, filled with racially charged negative rhetoric, began to emerge for a country, the United States, to grapple once more with its past, present, and future.  The tweets were directed toward four duly elected women of color in Congress.  In this light, the phenomenon of racism, yet again, was abruptly made more overt, rather than covert.  Indeed, it is fair to say that the phenomenon of racism is often an "unconscious or veiled phenomenon" for some.

Architecture Fast And Slow: Spatial And Material Procrastination, Sara Khorshidifard, Hannah Dewhirst

Sara Khorshidifard

At times when irresistible, all-accelerating technologies prompt normative social influences growing expectations for speediness, architecture is not immune. This paper explores time-space speculations in the ambitious pursuits of idealistically paced architectures. Outcomes present a palette of possibilities for discerning slow architecture as a paradigm. Grounding in the nature of design enticing postponements, the study explores, construes, and curates possibilities to bring in the advantage of slower thinking, sensing, making, and educating. Universal urges for speed are undeniable. Future of cities may also well remain digital with technologies persisting further impacts on limits and possibilities of all disciplines including architecture. What …

Connecting The Dots: Campus Form, Student Perceptions, And Academic Performance, Amir Hajrasouliha

Amir Hajrasouliha

This research is an attempt to evaluate the role of campus built environment and its immediate surroundings on a major concern of universities: student retention and graduation. The relationship of both objective and perceived measures of physical campuses with students’ academic performance was examined, using the California State University (CSU) campuses as its sample. The objective campus environment was measured by a Campus Score scale, and the perceived campus quality and perceived restorativeness were measured through an online survey from 446 students. The results demonstrate that both objective and perceived measures were significantly associated with students’ academic performance. However, the …

State Of The Art In Planning For College And University Campuses Site Planning And Beyond.Pdf, Amir Hajrasouliha

Amir Hajrasouliha

Colleges and universities have been planning their campuses for centuries, yet scholars have conducted little empirical research regarding the nature of campus planning in the United States. We review recent scholarship on campus planning, discovering that it is dominated by case studies (sometimes in edited collections) and some comparative studies. In this review we organize the literature into 3 geographic scales: the campus (or campus park), the campus– community interface, and the larger campus district. The literature addresses 5 topics: land use, design, sustainability, economic development, and collaboration. Most of the studies focus on research-oriented universities in metropolitan locations. The …

A New Teacher On Campus, L Carl Fiocchi, Alexander C. Schreyer, Peggi Clouston

L. Carl Fiocchi

The design of this building transitions it from a traditional role of academic “home” for the disciplines of the built environment to a most welcome new teacher and tectonic faculty member. The Design Building was always envisioned as a living laboratory for learning, deeply intertwined with the curriculum and progressive mission of the Design Building’s disciplines.

Situating Design, Gregory S. Palermo Sep 2017

Situating Design, Gregory S. Palermo

Gregory Palermo

This is a case study of the development of a new Core curriculum course at the Iowa State University (ISU) College of Design (CoD). It relates an overview of the creation of the course and sample learning exercises that activate a large lecture class. Historically, the CoD separated first-year students into discipline specific studies, narrowing, we believe, their perspectives about design. A Task Force analyzed learning outcomes of the first year programs, and proposed a more interdisciplinary conception of design education. The CoD committed itself to creating a Core foundation year of design studies, which students in Architecture, Landscape Architecture …

Ethical Expectations: Reflections From Beginning Architecture Students, Gregory S. Palermo Sep 2017

Ethical Expectations: Reflections From Beginning Architecture Students, Gregory S. Palermo

Gregory Palermo

Each year several thousand recent high school graduates enter accredited professional degree programs to study architecture. They have made the decision to ‘become an architect’ early in life and arrive at university directly from high school rather than upon completion of a prior baccalaureate degree. Undoubtedly, during the final years of high school, autumn 2008 entering first-year students answered this question more than a few times: “Why do you want to study architecture?”

Post-Mortem: Eight Years Of Comprehensive Design Experiments And What Comes Next, Matthew W. Fisher, Thomas W. Leslie, Gregory S. Palermo

Gregory Palermo

This paper documents the eight-year evolution of the Department of Architecture’s Comprehensive Design program at Iowa State University. Since its initial offering in 2001, we have attempted to deliver the NAAB requirement in a broad, holistic context, incorporating not only the required technical aspects of studio work, but also an urban, civic agenda and an emphasis on human, public space. The result has been a studio that is seen by the department and by partners in the profession as a model for integrative, collaborative work, and we offer techniques and suggestions for other programs with evolving Comprehensive studios.

Master-Planning The American Campus: Goals, Actions, And Design Strategies, Amir Hajrasouliha

Amir Hajrasouliha

This research identified common goals, actions, and design strategies of university campus master plans in the USA, by analyzing 50 randomly selected master plans. Four design strategies were distilled, based on the top goals and actions: transition from (1) a deficient campus to a complete campus, (2) an isolated campus to a contextual campus, (3) a fragmented campus to a cohesive campus, and (4) a brown campus to an ecological campus. In addition, seven campus form dimensions were distilled: (1) land use organization (arrangement of space and facilities), (2) compactness, (3) connectivity, (4) spatial configuration, (6) campus living, (7) greenness, …

Processes And Strategies For Assessing Social Responsibility Learning In Community-Engaged Pedagogy: An Architectural Design Studio Perspective, Sara Khorshidifard Apr 2017

Processes And Strategies For Assessing Social Responsibility Learning In Community-Engaged Pedagogy: An Architectural Design Studio Perspective, Sara Khorshidifard

Sara Khorshidifard

This article offers insights on course design elements and assessment strategies creating experiences and measures for social responsibility learning in architectural design education. The learning, a least considered and most overlooked concept in architecture, is where most design pedagogies fall short in educating. The following questions frame the study: What are some useful tactics to make community-based learning integrations more successful? What are some techniques to help measuring social responsibility outcomes? After mapping the literature, explaining the context, and analyzing the process, the article looks into applied assessment tools and strategies. Closer investigations reveal the approach taken in making the …

The Discursive Construction Of Learning Opportunities, Thomas Fowler Iv, Ethny Stewart Phd Mar 2017

The Discursive Construction Of Learning Opportunities, Thomas Fowler Iv, Ethny Stewart Phd

Thomas Fowler IV, DPACSA, FAIA

Researchers who enter new learning environments or disciplines, those that are outside their own disciplines of study, are often required to follow the roots and routes of the records to gain an emic (insider) understanding of the local actors, artifacts, and language. Through exploration of everyday patterns, the researcher begins to uncover what actors are required to know, understand, and construct to engage socially, professionally, and academically. For this poster, I will make visible the processes required to gain an emic understanding in a 24/7 access third year undergraduate architecture studio at university site in California.

The present study is …
