Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership
This study aims to examine the representation of African American males in AP, honors, and gifted courses in secondary education. The current investigation represents a causal-comparative investigation of 2017-2020 school district data from a large metropolitan school district regarding the number of African American males selected for inclusion in gifted and/or AP studies. This study's significance is to bring to the forefront a systemic practice within public schools, which has served to permanently deny African American males their ability to achieve academically at their level. Findings support that there is a lack of African American students currently enrolled in advanced …

Coaching Initiative For Beginning Teachers (Bt): Lessons Learned From One District’S Bt Support Program, Kathleen Brown, Monica Davis, Casey Elrod, Evan Hill, Derrick D. Jordan
Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership
Instructional coaching is a way to support classroom teachers in their efforts to provide high quality instruction across academic content areas. Because of beginner teachers’ needs for extra support, many districts are now embracing instructional coaches to provide specific pedagogical feedback to their beginning teachers via job-embedded, individualized, and sustained professional guidance. This initial, exploratory study employed mixed methods to gain both qualitative and quantitative insights into one district’s Beginning Teacher Support Program in general and Coaching Program in particular. Results indicate that, without a laser-like focus on instruction, the impact of coaching on student achievement and teacher retention is …

Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership
This study explores the ways in which public schools are evaluated and the results are reported in North Carolina. Currently using a formula that calculates a summative score based on academic achievement and academic growth, the impact of poverty and the complexity of school evaluation is investigated using demographic and testing data from schools across the state. Furthermore, recommendations to alter current practices of school evaluation and reporting as well as suggestions for future research are discussed based on this study’s findings.
The Case For Mandatory Literacy Training For Elementary Education Principals, Catherine Mcgeehan, Meganlyn Norris
The Case For Mandatory Literacy Training For Elementary Education Principals, Catherine Mcgeehan, Meganlyn Norris
Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership
The focus of this study was to examine how well Educational Leadership programs prepare principals to serve as literacy leaders. The role of a school leader is complex and multifaceted involving managerial duties and resource allocation (Jenkins, 2009). Yet, the primary role of the school leader is “…to promote the learning and success for all students” (Lunenburg, 2010, p. 1). In a 2017 report commissioned by the Learning Policy Institute, Sutcher, Podolsky and Espinoza noted a strong positive correlation between instructional leadership and student achievement. This raises questions and concerns regarding the extent to which leadership preparation programs are preparing …

Leadership Styles Of Superintendents In The Developmental Disability System In Ohio, Kristine Hodge Edd, Karen H. Larwin Phd
Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership
The county boards of developmental disabilities in the state of Ohio have experienced significant change in vision, mission, programs, services, and funding over the last several years. In times of vast change, the ability to successfully lead an organization becomes challenging. In an effort to identify the leadership behaviors and styles of superintendents of county boards in the changing environment, the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire Form 5X ([MLQ Form 5X], Bass, 2007) was administered and analysis was conducted. The most common self-identified leadership style is transformational, followed by transactional and laissez-faire Implications of this study support the transformational leadership style in …

Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership
Specialized literacy professionals, guided by the International Literacy Association’s (ILA) Standards for the Preparation of Literacy Professionals 2017, fulfill many roles within the elementary school setting to support the literacy development of students. The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to investigate elementary principals’ knowledge of and expectations for the specialized literacy professionals’ roles and responsibilities compared to the ILA Standards. This study included 36 elementary (K-5) principals. Data was collected using an online survey adapted from a survey developed by Bean, et al. (2015) and voluntary follow-up interviews to further explore responses. Findings revealed that elementary principals consider the …

Preparing North Carolina Principals For Trauma-Sensitive Leadership, Tawannah G. Allen, Anthony Jackson, Dustin Namath Johnson, Derrick D. Jordan
Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership
Childhood trauma is an all-too common factor in the lives of students and their families. Schools and communities across America are more likely to serve families that have experienced trauma (Anderson, 2016). Although trauma or toxic episodes can impact families across the economic spectrum, children living in poverty, in socially isolated areas, and in economically distressed communities are often disproportionately affected. Statistics offered by the National Resiliency Institute (2018) are as equally dismal, in that 72% of children and youth will experience a traumatic episode caused by abuse, neglect, the loss of their homes to hurricanes, fires, earthquakes, incarceration, parental …

Supporting Professional Development Through Digital Principal Leadership, William Sterrett, Jayson W. Richardson
Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership
A core role of the K-12 school leader is to support and nurther the growth of others. That growth is commonly thought to be at the student level. However, school leaders must also focus on the growth of their teachers. School leaders are adjusting to a world where technology has crept into many aspects of the profession. And sometimes, technology innovation comes during a time of sudden disruption, such as the COVID-19 pandemic in Spring 2020 where digital learning and leadership become the new norm, even when uncertainty and change were omnipresent. As such, while it is clear that principals …
The Partnership Imperative For Preparing Effective Principals In North Carolina Schools, Martinette Horner, Derrick D. Jordan
The Partnership Imperative For Preparing Effective Principals In North Carolina Schools, Martinette Horner, Derrick D. Jordan
Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership
The extant literature highlights the impact principals have on daily operations, visioning, school climate, academic programming, instructional monitoring, and numerous other areas. The need for well-trained principals at the helm of schools, particularly those with large concentrations of at-risk students, has been identified as a critically important factor in improving academic outcomes. Underdeveloped leaders often struggle to improve schools and are unable to show adequate progress among the students they serve. They are also more prone to early burnout, increasing turnover rates. As such, the need to strengthen principal preparation programs has become even more evident in recent years. A …

As in many states, educational leaders in North Carolina are reimaging their standards for educator preparation and practice. Nearly two years ago, the NC General Assembly and State Board of Education appointed eighteen education stakeholders to the Professional Educator Preparation and Standards Commission, including principals, superintendents, HR directors, teachers, and university faculty.

That was then, this is now. Oh, what a difference a few months can make. When, in the Fall of 2019 we put out a call for articles on the state of principal preparation none of us considered the possibility that an 800 pound gorilla named Covid 19 was about to take up residence. Now it is the presence that we cannot ignore.

To Empathize, Or Not Empathize In Educational Leadership, Mei Jiang, Shulan Lu
Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership
In this paper, we discuss transformational leadership and propose that empathy is at the heart of transformational leadership. We review the research on empathy and discuss the implication of these insights in educational leadership. We highlight the multifaceted and interconnected nature of empathy and discuss components of empathy that are most relevant to educational leaders. Recognizing one’s constraints on the empathy scale could protect leaders from burnout and poor decision making.

Leading For Social Justice: A Call To Action To Improve Society., Teresa L. G. Warner
Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership
School leaders are required to prepare students for a globally competitive society, and act ethically to facilitate a shared vision of school practices that serve all students equitably. Social justice leadership provided in school and teacher leadership preparation programs is a way to meet the standards for school executives and teachers. The decision to lead for social justice can be made as a result of district mandates while some leaders are motivated by personal experiences. Leaders are distracted from the importance of leading for social justice due to the pressures of accountability testing and the political outcry of the day. …
