Faculty Perceptions Of Principal Support And Change Orientation In Virginia High Schools, Karen E. Cagle
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Similar to other organizations, change is a part of any school setting. In this time of necessary educational transformation, school principals must have the knowledge and skills to be change agents. This study sought to expand on existing research on change orientation by examining how principal support affects the faculty's receptivity to institutional change. Thus, the focus of this study was to explore the relationship between two dimensions of principal support and three aspects of change orientation. The Principal Support Scale (PSS) and Faculty Change Orientation Scale (FCOS) were used to survey 1,276 licensed, professional teachers in 34 public high …
The Millennial Generation: Howe And Strauss Disputed, Holly Alexander Agati
The Millennial Generation: Howe And Strauss Disputed, Holly Alexander Agati
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Researchers have attempted to untangle the complexity of a generation through four primary effects---time interval, cohort, period, and attitude---based on personal and societal attributes. The Millennial generation, born 1982-2000, has received considerable attention through the media, in educational institutions, and in the workplace. The seven persona characterization of the Millennials of Howe and Strauss (1991, 2000) has been extensively cited, yet not been widely scrutinized. Higher education personnel, in particular, have utilized Howe and Strauss' theory to explain changes observed with the current college student population.;This case study sought to discover the relationship and interrelationship between the four-generation effects and …

Jumping Off The Couch: Infusing Creativity Into Counselor Education, Christopher Lawrence
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This study infused key elements of creativity into the process of counselor education, exposing students in a counseling skills and techniques course to a curriculum designed to promote tolerance for ambiguity, appropriate risk-taking behaviors, and improvisational skills. Employing a phenomenological strategy of inquiry, the researcher sought to explore the ways the participants made sense of their experience in the course, as well as the ways the experience informed their perspective of counseling and the role of a counselor. Participants recognized counseling as a profession replete with ambiguity and rife with personal and relational challenges. They came to appreciate a clinician's …

Organizational Justice Perceptions Of Virginia High School Teachers: Relationships To Organizational Citizenship Behavior And Student Achievement, William R. Travis Burns

An emergent research base suggests that teacher perceptions of fairness with respect to interactions with school administrators, decision-making processes, and decision outcomes have much to contribute to our understanding of effective schools. This study focused on the relationship between organizational justice and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) in the high school setting and their relationships to student achievement. Correlational analysis was used to analyze and measure the strength of the relationships between examined variables. The study found a positive and significant relationship between organizational justice and organizational citizenship behavior in Virginia public high schools. Children Serve Too: An Investigation Of The Impacts Of Military Family Life On Adult Relationships, Karena Heyward
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Military involvement in Operations Iraqi Freedom, New Dawn and Enduring Freed 3131 brings a focus on military families to the forefront of public and governmental attention. The military family represents a distinct cultural context, as each family is immersed in "the prevailing values, norms, philosophies, customs and traditions of the armed forces" (Collins, 2000, p. 213, i.e., military culture). Thousands of families live within these unique communities, but little is known about the role of such family experiences upon the development of children and their transitions into adulthood or the impacts of military family life throughout adulthood. Specifically, few studies …

Relationship Between Teacher Self-Efficacy And Use Of Evidence-Based Practices In Managing Students With Challenging Behaviors, Sheila R. Carr
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Given the negative impact of students' challenging behaviors on the learning process, a need exists to gain a more comprehensive understanding of how teachers' beliefs, practices, and knowledge relate to their abilities to effectively manage classroom behaviors. Three-hundred and forty-two (342) public school (PK-12) teachers in a mid-Atlantic state responded to an on-line survey. Data were examined using correlational statistical analysis to measure the relationship between teachers' sense of efficacy (TSE) and use of evidenced-based practices (EBP) in managing students with challenging behaviors, teachers' use of EBP and how they value types/topics of professional development and years of teaching experience. …

Literacy Self-Efficacy And Achievement Of Secondary Students With Disabilities, Mary Mau Runnells
Literacy Self-Efficacy And Achievement Of Secondary Students With Disabilities, Mary Mau Runnells
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Adolescent literacy, or adolescents' ability to read, write, and communicate about the variety of texts they encounter in and out of school, has remained inordinately, and consistently, low for the past 20 years (NCES, 2010). Self-efficacy is a widely-used construct for measuring and predicting student achievement (Pajares, Johnson, & Usher, 2007; Phan, 2011; Schunk& Zimmerman, 2007). A differential level of literacy achievement is noted between certain student subgroups including students with and without disabilities (NCES, 2010).Students with disabilities are also included within other student subgroups that persistently underperform on literacy assessments (NCES, 2010) compounding school districts efforts to achieve Adequate …

Empathy As A Crucial Skill For Instructional Coaches: Can It Be Taught?, Carol B. Carter
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
When a coach empathetically listens to another person's ideas, thoughts, and concerns, the coach communicates that the other person's life is important and meaningful. This may be the most important service that a coach can provide. A mixed method design was employed. Quantitative analysis examined gain scores in an identical pretest and posttest measure of EI, using the EQmentor (Justice, 2010). How Institutional Theory Informs State Education Policy Regarding Exit Outcomes For Students With Disabilities, Michele Myers Hopkins
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
As school districts negotiate accountability requirements imposed by federal and state policies regarding exit outcomes for students with disabilities, one strategic response has been to provide students with mild disabilities such as SLD, ED, and Gil with alternative routes to graduation (Goertz & Duffy, 2003; Guy, Shin & Lee, 1999; Johnson & Thurlow, 2003; Johnson, Thurlow, & Stout, 2007; Pankaskie & Webb, 1999). These alternatives made available by state policy may assist school districts to maintain legitimacy by meeting accountability targets and obtaining resources; however, unintended negative consequences may arise.;The purpose of this study was to examine the responses of …

What remains unknown is how they manage life roles as Division III student-athletes.;This case study sought to address the time demands and life roles (e.g. athletics, family, friendship, religion, academic, and romantic interests) of student-athletes. Two private, Division Ill institutions …

Teaching Slope Of A Line Using The Graphing Calculator As A Tool For Discovery Learning, Fiona Costello Nichols
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Discovery learning is one of the instructional strategies sometimes used to teach Algebra I. However, little research is available that includes investigation of the effects of incorporating the graphing calculator technology with discovery learning. This study was initiated to investigate two instructional approaches for teaching slope of a line in Algebra I. One approach involves the graphing calculator as a tool in a discovery learning setting. The second approach involves using the graphing calculator to reinforce traditional instruction. An urban public school division located in southeastern Virginia was the site for this investigation. Two Algebra I classes from each of …
