Outcomes and Impact Quarterly

Youth are bombarded with a myriad of life stressors that impacts their self-esteem and ability to be resilient. Young people from diverse backgrounds across the state of Utah participated in a three-day camp structured around a newly developed confidence-building curriculum. Practical application and high-adventure activities reinforced the concepts taught in the curriculum.

E-Cigarette And Vape Prevention In Rural Southeast Utah: Outcomes Of Teacher Education, Christina Pay, Jenna Hawks, Jordyn Oman, Cris Meier, Ashley Yaugher

Outcomes and Impact Quarterly

“Be Epic” is a multi-component health and wellness program on vape prevention in rural Southeast Utah that targets youth grades 5–12, teachers, and parents. The teacher component included a one-time education session that taught teachers the basics of the “CATCH my Breath” curriculum. Results of a short-term outcome evaluation showed an increase in teachers’ knowledge and confidence related to e-cigarette education.

A major issue in rural counties is substance misuse. USU Extension implemented a substance prevention program with youth in rural counties. The program included family- and school-based education activities to promote youth resilience and development. Evaluation results showed youth exhibited strong anti-drug attitudes after the program.

Self-efficacy is seen as a barrier for youth, females in particular, to enter computer science (CS). In this study, I presented a near-peer mentoring model that focused on changing the mentee’s self-efficacy in CS. The present study had three objectives: (a) to design a near-peer mentoring model (i.e., a conceptual model) around the sources of information that influence self-efficacy, (b) to develop a mentor training model based on the conceptual model, and (c) to test the effectiveness of the training model in increasing mentees’ self-efficacy in the context of a summer App programming camp. A virtual version of the Davis County annual youth Camp Thrive was developed and implemented due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Youth interns were hired to guide the transition process. Evaluation results show that the camp was successful in the online format for teaching mental health awareness concepts to youth.

4-H Youth and Families with Promise (4-H YFP) is a one to one youth mentoring program that aims to help youth obtain skills that will help them to be successful. The purpose of this research was to determine if any positive outcomes were shown of youth participating in 4-H YFP. Positive outcomes were identified as peer social competence, greater ability to make positive choices, the development of effective communication skills, building connections, and contributing to the community. STEM fields in the US continue to be dominated by people whose cultural backgrounds are White, English-speaking, and middle class (National Academy of Engineering and National Research Council, 2009). Many reasons have been offered to explain this phenomenon: Students’ backgrounds may include worldviews, beliefs, and communicative practices that do not cohere with those practiced in STEM classrooms (Aikenhead & Jegede, 1999; Lee, 1999); instructional materials may present STEM fields as a-cultural, decontextualized practices with no evident connection to students’ lives and communities, such as the routine completion of numerical exercises (O’Halloran, 2005); students’ identities—shaped in part by their desired life …

Few studies have focused on how youth develop agency to organize and participate in online unstructured creative collaborations. This paper describes and analyzes how youth programmers organized collaborative groups in response to a programming “Collab Challenge” in the Scratch Online Community and in an accompanying workshop with high school students. The analyses focused on modalities of online collaborations, determined the breadth of online participation, and examined local teens’ awareness of the online community. What Do Students Gain From A Week At Science Camp? Youth Perceptions And The Design Of An Immersive Research-Oriented Astronomy Camp, Deborah A. Fields

This study explored American high school students’ perceptions of the benefits of a summer astronomy camp, emphasizing a full cycle of the research process and how the organization of the camp contributed to those perceptions. Semi-structured interviews with students and staff were used to elicit the specific benefits that campers perceived from their experiences and examine them in relation to the stated goals and strategies of camp staff. Among the perceived benefits that students described were peer relationships, personal autonomy, positive relationships with staff, and deepened science knowledge. Self-determination, or the ability to identify and achieve goals based on a foundation of knowing and valuing oneself, is both a legal right and a responsibility of an individual. Self-determined employment is consistent with contemporary practice, outcome-based research, and the reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004. In this article, we describe three challenges facing youth with disabilities in rural areas related to determining their own employment, including (a) extensive or chronic poverty in some rural areas as a factor limiting selection of preferred employment, (b) intensive competition for limited jobs available, and (c) the potential for …

Turning Points And Protective Processes: A Qualitative Study On Resilient Youth Through Their Perspective As Resilient Adults, Michael E. Monson

This study investigates the processes of resiliency and the turning points of decision-making in youth from at-risk environments. The study utilizes a constructivist, qualitative approach, to examine indicators of resiliency from both an individual and contextual perspective. The narrative descriptions of eleven adults from at-risk childhoods are analyzed through biographical interviews.

Analyses were completed to determine common factors that contribute to the process of resiliency in successful adults. Results indicate that the influences of risk on healthy functioning are modified by shifting environmental protective factors, resources, and developed attributes of self-efficacy. Japanese American Youth In Topaz Relocation Center, Utah: An Oral History, Akiko J. Tohmatsu

This project examines Japanese American youth in Topaz High School, a school set up in a War Relocation Center during 1942 to 1945. It looks at what students were taught there, as well as what they felt, thought, heard, and saw.

Oral histories collected from Japanese American former internees constitute the main methodology. An oral history enables us to know the feelings and emotions involved in evacuation at the same time as it provides us with more human insight, such as human perspectives and personal reminiscences, which are not available in historical, social, or political accounts.

A Comparison Of The Drinking Behavior Of Delinquent Youth Versus Non-Delinquent Youth In The States Of Idaho And Utah, Henry Dean Garrett

A questionnaire on drinking behavior and attitudes was administered to 292 delinquent youth confined in youth detention homes in St. Anthony, Idaho, and Ogden, Utah, and to 466 students i n the secondary schools of the Pocatello. School District, Pocatello, Idaho.

Using a Chi Square analysis, comparisons were made of responses between the delinquent and non-delinquent groups to questions regarding first drinking experience, present drinking behavior, attitudes toward drinking, criminal acts while drinking alcoholic beverages, age, race, sex, family income, population of area lived in, with whom the students lived, and parents' drinking behavior.
