Functional Outcome Analysis: Do The Costs Outweigh The Benefits?, Susan M. Sheridan May 1993

Functional Outcome Analysis: Do The Costs Outweigh The Benefits?, Susan M. Sheridan

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Noell and Gresham (this issue) provide a thoughtful and insightful description of Functional Outcome Analysis (FOA) as an important construct for the evaluation of consultation and prereferral interventions. Their “framework for investigating relationships between interventions, behavior change, costs, benefits, treatment integrity, treatment acceptability, and ecological validity” (p. 38) is novel, and there is a definite need for expanding our considerations of outcome in consultation research and practice. There is obvious scientific and empirical appeal to the conceptual model of FOA. In particular, it has the potential to move consultation research in a new and exciting direction. However, practically speaking, one …

Geological Field Guide To The Cedar Point Biological Station, Keith County, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr., Roger K. Pabian Feb 1993

Geological Field Guide To The Cedar Point Biological Station, Keith County, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr., Roger K. Pabian

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

This field guide was produced by staff members of the Conservation and Survey Division of the University of Nebraska originally in 1979 at the request of Dr. Brent Nickol, former Director of the Cedar Point Biological Station. It is an introduction to the geologic history and paleoecology of the Cedar Point area intended for students, staff, and other persons using the camp. This revision has been made some 15 years after the first version to reflect changes in ideas resulting from new data collected during that time.

Users of this guide should take care when studying the rock exposures described …

Prehistoric Chipped Stone Tools Of Nebraska, Thomas P. Myers Jan 1993

Prehistoric Chipped Stone Tools Of Nebraska, Thomas P. Myers

University of Nebraska State Museum: Programs Information

Prehistoric Nebraskans used stone, bone, or even wooden tools for most tasks of everyday life that ranged from cutting a tree to making weapons to preparing foods . Bone and wooden tools are seldom found, but debris from the manufacture and maintenance of chipped stone tools is the most cornman evidence of human activity at prehistoric villages and camp sites. Some kinds of stone tools, such as end scrapers and bifacial knives, were perfected more than 10,000 years ago. Others, notably projectile points, were subject to continual refinements as revealed by changes in shape and size.

To understand the evidence …

Curriculum-Based Measurement

This volume in the Buros-Nebraska Series on Measurement and Testing provides current information on the development and implementation of curriculum-based measurement. As the title of the volume suggests, effective measurement of children's classroom achievement is not a new problem. Curriculum-based measurement provides an interesting and useful alternative to traditional strategies for assessing academic performance.

This volume continues the tradition of including papers given at the annual Buros-Nebraska Symposium on Testing and Measurement as well as additional contributions selected especially for this book. Each of our authors has made significant contributions to the research that has been produced in the area …

3. Enhancing Instructional Programming And Student Achievement With Curriculum-Based Measurement, Lynn S. Fuchs Jan 1993

3. Enhancing Instructional Programming And Student Achievement With Curriculum-Based Measurement, Lynn S. Fuchs

Curriculum-Based Measurement

Curriculum-based measurement (CBM) is a form of curriculum-based assessment. As such, CBM has three features in common with all curriculum-based assessment approaches (Tucker, 1987): Test stimuli are drawn from the student's curriculum; assessment is ongoing and repeated across time; and assessment data are used to formulate instructional decisions.

Despite these similarities to other forms of curriculum-based assessment, CBM is distinctive because of two important features: It measures student proficiency across the annual curriculum and relics on standardized, prescriptive measurement methods (Fuchs & Dena, in press). The first purpose of this chapter is to explain these two features of CBM, by …

Curriculum-Based Measurement

In the history of Greek mythology there is a character named Sisyphus who, for sins committed during his lifetime, is condemned to spend eternity pushing a boulder up a hill. No matter how hard Sisyphus tries as he nears the top of the hill, the boulder rolls back down. Sisyphus cannot escape from this continued cycle of effort and failure. Sometimes, when I think about the experiences of many children attempting to learn basic skills in the public schools, I think of the myth of Sisyphus. Too often, it seems to me, no matter how hard they try, they do …
